Coastal and Marine Tourism PgDip/MSc

Course Description

This course is designed to provide an advanced education in the planning, development and management of coastal and marine tourism (CMT). Graduates of the course are expected to have a broad overview of the environmental base for coastal and marine tourism, to have extensive knowledge of policy development that applies to these tourism types, and be able to operate at a professional level in planning, development and the management of tourism in this specific context.

Practical approaches to the management of this environment (legislation, policy, regulation, best practice) are presented, analysed and reviewed by reference to case studies of coastal and marine tourism.
Those successfully completing the Masters element of the course will have demonstrated their ability to undertake and present a piece of independent research at an advanced level.

The specific objectives of the course are to develop:

• a thorough understanding of how the marine and coastal space "work and operate" as a resource and asset first, and then second as recreation and tourism spaces;
• a critical awareness of the lack of systematic planning of these environments for recreation and tourism;
• an ability to plan, develop and manage these spaces for tourists and other resource users in a sustainable manner.
