In the most recent CIPD Learning and Development Survey in the UK, three quarters of organisations surveyed offer coaching and mentoring, with sixty-five percent expecting to see an increase in the use of coaching in the future. The emergence of coaching both as an area of professional practice is widely recognised. Coaching is seen as a significant intervention to create a capable and resilient work force able to adapt to new challenges and thrive in today’s tough global economic climate. Coaching is seen as a key leadership skill.
On this part-time MA in Coaching course you will integrate your prior work and life experiences with the theoretical concepts underpinning coaching practice. You will expand your knowledge and understanding of theories and then relate that understanding to the skills and approaches necessary to develop professionally as a coach. This will help you to research and inform your models and modes of coaching practice. To be an effective coach we believe it is important to attend to your personal and emotional development as a coach. With this in mind, we do not just to teach coaching skills or promote ‘one best model’ of coaching. We allow you to explore and expand your coaching repertoire, with structured reflective practice, tutor input, coaching practice as coach and coachee and coach-supervisor support. This enables you to apply your knowledge to a variety of working contexts.
This course offers three distinct awards: Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma and Masters Awards; you can exit the course at any stage and continue your studies at a later date.

The course is delivered by a team of experienced practising coaches, who are engaged in research into coaching and who have a passion for coaching as a developmental approach. The course, in addition to being an academic qualification is a practical course; preparing you for professional coaching practice and through compilation of a portfolio; individual accreditation with the Association for Coaching.
Teaching And Assessment
The learning approach will be student-centred; placing great emphasis on you reflecting upon your experiences of coaching in order to develop your understanding of your practice of coaching. The course will engage you in independent and guided study. Activities, to be completed between the workshops might include reading, research, gathering data about personal and organisational practices, reflecting on how practice relates to theory, preparing written assessment reports and collating appropriate evidence.
As part of the workshops, there will be tutor led discussions on coaching related theories, models and approaches, exploring the relevance of these in a range of contexts and the implications of use in practice. You will have an opportunity to share your experiences and practice both within the workshops and during peer coaching practice between the workshops. This enables you to experience being a coach, coachee and an observer to appreciate the roles of each within the coaching process to inform your practice. You will receive formative feedback from tutors and peers.
In addition you will be a member of a coaching learning set, where you will discuss and review your practice with student peers; enabling the sharing of best practice and gaining new insights into your practice as a coach. This shared learning process, supported by a coaching feedback framework will enable you to analyse and evaluate your approach. There will also be the opportunity to engage in coaching supervision, where a coaching supervisor will facilitate a discussion on your coaching practice, challenges and insights. This will support your learning and practice as a coach and your future professional development
You will be assessed in a variety of ways in line with the philosophy of developing you as a reflective coaching practitioner, operating within professional ethical guidelines. The aim of each assignment is to help you to learn and develop from your on-going practice and through engagement with the wider coaching community. Examples include: Reflective essays considering your developing coaching identity; assessed coaching practice; a strategic recommendation for implementing coaching in a case study organisation and a sample audio recording along with a reflective analysis of some your work with clients.
Throughout the duration of your course you will have access to state-of-the-art facilities to support your learning experience. You will primarily be based in our purpose-built Business School, which boasts exceptional facilities such as classrooms, social spaces, Harvard-style lecture theatres, and hub areas.
Research-rich learning plays a major part in all of our teaching and this course offers the opportunity to study coaching to Masters level and engage in the latest coaching research. The teaching team are all engaged in coaching research.

Alumni from other coaching programmes (Our Adv Diploma (level 6), ILM coaching awards, other institutions coaching programmes) would need to progress through an APEL process – including the submission of a coaching CV and a short interview, in order to be accepted on to the programme.
