Course content

The MSc/Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Endodontics provides extensive teaching of contemporary endodontics for general dental practitioners and hospital dental staff.

Developed through collaboration between the University of South Wales and Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board this is the only course of its type in Wales.

The course is designed to strengthen knowledge and understanding in the field of endodontology, improve clinical skills in all aspects of endodontic diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical treatment, and hopefully lead to increased job satisfaction.

You will undertake clinical work placements at the Department of Restorative Dentistry at Morriston Hospital and Port Talbot Resource Centre. Lectures will take place on Glyntaff campus.

What you will study

Year one
The first year involves attending 14 full days (mostly Fridays)
- Endodontic Diagnosis and Treatment Planning
- Endodontic Access, Canal Shaping, Cleaning and Obturation
- Restoration of the Endodontically Treated Tooth
- Clinical Sessions With Live Patients

Year two
You will spend 3 days at the University of South Wales Glyntaff campus studying the Research Methods module.
- Research Methods: Clinical Endodontics
- A Practice-Based Clinical Case Studies Portfolio

Learning and teaching methods

There will be an emphasis on lecture and seminar-driven teaching before progressing to the hands-on, clinical components. Lectures and “Phantom-head” type teaching will occur over 6 days toward the beginning of year one, and live clinical practice occurs over 6 further days in the second half of the year. In year two you will undertake further self-study and develop your practice case reports.

Course materials (including access to electronic journals) are made available after lectures via the Universities online portal “Blackboard”.

The course is designed around your needs, so you can choose a rate of study that best fits your development needs or career ambitions. For example, you may choose to exit the course after the first year with a Postgraduate Certificate (PgC) and return to achieve the Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) at a later date. The maximum time frame for completion of the Diploma is five years.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

Graduates of this course will, with continued practitioner experience, become skilled in endodontic techniques and have opportunities to tailor their practice in becoming a Dentist with Special Interest (DwSI). It is likely that a PgD qualification such as this will enhance your prospect of joining DwSI lists as and when created by local health boards.

It is anticipated that this course could also be used as accreditation of prior and experiential learning (APEL) towards other postgraduate Masters programmes in endodontology or dentistry. You can also progress to a generic Masters qualification at University of South Wales.

Assessment methods

Assessments take the form of written assessments and case reports. Clinical assessment involves both live patient and phantom head testing. A Viva Voce examination is required at the end of the second year.
