Some voluntary or professional experience of work with children and adolescents is desirable, but not essential.

Course content

The course explores mental health in childhood and adolescence. Through studying this course you will develop your understanding of child development and mental health difficulties in children and adolescents and will consider the implications of theory and research work with children and young people. This course is taught by a multidisciplinary team, to ensure that you engage with a diverse range of perspectives. Child and adolescent mental health is understood in its developmental and social context and you will explore both theoretical and practice related issues. Your research skills will also be developed through a taught research methods module and dissertation module. Modules are taught by practitioners and academics from psychology, counselling, social work, nursing, psychiatric nursing, law and psychiatry and as such engage with a diverse range of perspectives.

You can choose to graduate with either a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Postgraduate Diploma by completing designated modules or you can complete all of the recommended course modules and be awarded with an MSc.

If you choose to complete the full MSc you will need to complete an individual research project and submit a thesis (which is 12-15,000 words). Please note that this is not required for the postgraduate diploma.
