Course Description

The M.S. Chemistry degree is a one to two-year program of study comprised of course work and thesis research that prepares graduates for successful scientific careers in industry, academia, or government service, or to continue their education in a doctoral program or professional school.

DEPARTMENTAL OVERVIEW
The Department of Chemistry offers a program of study leading to an M.S. in Chemistry designed to prepare graduates for a successful career in industry or to continue their education in a doctoral program or professional school. By offering courses in the five (5) major areas of chemistry, the students have an opportunity to reinforce their background and expand their knowledge in areas not covered by their undergraduate degree. The faculty maintains a wide variety of research programs, which gives each student a chance to conduct, evaluate, and report on original research. A low student-to-faculty ratio allows for individual attention and produces a stimulating intellectual atmosphere conducive to learning.

MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the graduate program in chemistry may be summarized as follows:

1. To provide an ongoing program of study that prepares graduates to successfully pursue scientific careers in industry or to continue their education in a doctoral program or professional school.

2. To provide students with opportunities to reinforce their background and expand their knowledge in areas integrated with their undergraduate coursework, with course offerings in the five major branches of chemistry.

3. To provide an ongoing, stimulating and intellectual atmosphere conducive to the learning process of both students and faculty through low student-to-faculty ratios.

4. To provide the facilities and professional mentorship enabling students to propose, conduct, evaluate, and report in a systemic way on original research and thereby add to the knowledge of humanity.

5. To provide opportunities for students to refine both oral and written communication skills.

The graduate curriculum is designed to acquaint students with the current ideas in the five major areas of chemistry (organic, inorganic, physical, analytical, and biochemical). The thesis project affords the student practical experience in the methods used to obtain new knowledge and to develop the skills necessary to understand and relate this knowledge. Special topics courses allow individual professors to present specialized material in their area of expertise. The faculty maintains a wide variety of research programs, giving each student an opportunity to conduct, evaluate, and report on original research.

Faculty
Our 20 faculty members each hold terminal degrees in their field and represent all the majorbranches of chemistry. From your first day as a master’s student, you will have an advisor who is ready and able to mentor you and help you along your career path. Our faculty are known for their overwhelming commitment to providing the best education possible, and you will see this as soon as you step onto campus.

Graduate Assistantships
Teaching Assistants — A limited number of teaching assistantships may be available that include paid tuition and fees along with a monthly stipend in return for work teaching undergraduates. The responsibilities of teaching assistants include (but are not limited to) assisting faculty with grading, teaching labs and providing help sessions for students.

Research Assistants — A limited number of research assistantships may be available contingent on funding availability. Students with research assistantships are expected to conduct research as directed by the grant and supervising faculty.

Entry Requirements

Students seeking admission to full standing in the M.S. program in Chemistry are required to have a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry that has been certified by the American Chemical Society or course work equivalent of this degree. The minimum requirement is one (1) year each of general, analytical, organic, and physical chemistry; and one (1) semester each of inorganic and instrumental analysis. Students are required to take the general portion of the GRE® General Test (GRE) . International application deadlines: October 1, 2015 for spring (January) 2016 start and May 1, 2016 for fall (August) 2016 start.
