“Cardiff University was a natural choice for me when I was awarded a Chevening Scholarship and I was impressed by the passionate commitment of staff to teaching excellence and by the personal attention to student needs. The Master’s course was intensive and demanding, yet very stimulating and enriching. It has comprehensively prepared me for research across the broad spectrum of media and communication.”
Casmir Igbokwe (MA International Journalism)
The day I entered the classroom I was amazed by the facilities here; accessing the internet, online journals and library was easy any time of day or night. The lecturers are world-class and down-to-earth – I am getting used to calling them by their first names. Sometimes we mix outside School which cushions the serious academic work we do. I enjoy the exposure to a diverse range of cultures at Cardiff. The house where I live is a mini United Nations. We live like a family, sharing many things in common, dining out and looking after each other. I enjoy luxuries at Cardiff that I’d never experience in my country, Nigeria. After my studies, I hope to go back to preach institutionalizing some of these values in my country. By then, hopefully, I will have ascended higher in my career as a journalist.
Effie Ansah (MA International Public Relations)
"I chose Cardiff mainly for three reasons. It was the only British university offering a Master’s degree in International Public Relations. Cardiff also ranked 7th in the top 100 universities in UK at the time. The Dean of Studies at my undergraduate university in Ghana also recommended Cardiff and JOMEC (the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies) in particular.
I found the MA International Public Relations course to be a thoroughly exciting learning experience. The tutors are world-class professionals and tuition is highly practical and very relevant to the PR profession; the pitches and case studies were real issues of the day and very relevant globally. Each assignment offered a new challenge and added to the learning curve.
Every one of the MAIPR classes was like a miniature UN session - my classmates came from all over the world. I made wonderful friends and learned a great deal about different cultures in a short space of time. It has been a fantastic learning experience."
Kaisa Pankakoski (MA International Journalism)
“My experience at Cardiff University has been a very positive one. Even though my MA course was hard work, it has been extremely beneficial and I feel confident that after completing my dissertation I will have the skills to launch a successful career in journalism. I always felt welcome during my time in the University and tutors’ doors were open at all times if I needed a chat concerning my studies. Another advantage was the great cultural variety and friendly atmosphere - my class consisted of people from all over the world!”
Shelley J. Thompson (MA in Journalism Studies)
Cardiff University offered everything I was looking for in a master’s degree programme and more. As a professional journalist, I looked for an academic degree that would enable me to reflect on my practice and that of my colleagues around the world. The journalism studies degree was a perfect fit for that reason.
It was also important for me to attend a university that prioritises research. The JOMEC faculty members have conducted excellent research and are leaders in the journalism studies field. We learn from the best academics in the world, however, they always remain accessible to the students. Individual modules expose students to the evolving field of journalism studies and provide an excellent foundation for the students’ research projects.
Finally, Cardiff University and JOMEC in particular offer a diverse staff and student body from which to learn. Here, I have met people who taught me not only about how journalism is practiced in countries around the world, but also about their individual cultures. The experience has been rich in ways I could not have imagined. When I leave Cardiff University, I will not only have a master’s degree but lasting friendships that span the globe.
