Course content

This flexible approach to distance learning is designed for people who wish to undertake Continued Professional Development (CPD), top-up or progress to a postgraduate qualification in biomedical science.

Study at your own pace with our Biomedical Studies (Distance Learning) MSc. The use of distance learning modules designed originally for IBMS “top-up” can be used to convert from less relevant BSc routes by undertaking appropriate underpinning materials. Transfer of credit may also be possible.

Students are likely to be working in biomedical science environment, either as part of a health service or in industry. People take the course for various reasons, but mainly for career advancement or continuing professional development.

You'll be assessed through quizzes, personal learning logs and end of course assessments which can include essays, posters, leaflets and online presentations.

Professional accreditation

Individual modules are accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).

Modular structure

The modules listed below are for the academic year 2016/17 and represent the course modules at this time. Modules and module details (including, but not limited to, location and time) are subject to change over time.

Year 1 modules include:
-Advanced Immunology (core, 20 credits)
-Bioethics, Research and Grant Proposal (core, 20 credits)
-Research Project (Biomedical Science) (core, 60 credits)
-Haemoglobinopathies (option, 10 credits)
-Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology in Health and Disease (option, 20 credits)
-Introduction to Cell Biology (option, 10 credits)
-Introduction to Cellular Pathology (option, 10 credits)
-Introduction to Clinical Biochemistry (option, 10 credits)
-Introduction to Clinical Genetics (option, 20 credits)
-Introduction to Clinical Immunology (option, 20 credits)
-Introduction to General Microbiology (option, 10 credits)
-Introduction to Haematology (option, 10 credits)
-Introduction to Immunology (option, 10 credits)
-Introduction to Medical Microbiology (option, 20 credits)
-Introduction to Molecular Biology and Genetics (option, 10 credits)
-Introduction to Toxicology (option, 10 credits)
-Introduction to Transfusion and Transplantation Science (option, 10 credits)

After the course

You can use the modules taken to complete IBMS top-up education towards their competency portfolio or as CPD. If you complete the MSc core modules and 80 credits from other modules you'll be entitled to the MSc qualification.

This course allows consideration for promotion at work.

Graduates with two years relevant professional experience can apply for the Member grade of membership of the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS). The course develops professional skills which enhance employability.
