Biomed Online is aimed at employees across the health sector who want to keep abreast of the latest developments in biomedical science, healthcare management and related subjects. The Biomed Online Learning programme is managed by a consortium of:

  • NHS Trusts
  • Pathology Joint Ventures
  • Public Health England
  • University of Greenwich.

Courses are approved for continuing professional development (CPD) by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), the leading body for those working in the field.

Programme structure

There are 17 structured online courses currently on offer, with more in the pipeline. Each has been specifically tailored to meet workplace needs and each is delivered online with full support from an experienced practitioner. Together they provide a flexible, practical way to learn, either for CPD or towards a Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert), Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) or Master's degree (MSc).

Students take four online modules for the PGDip or MSc, and two for the PGCert awards (see the 'What you'll study' section for the list of modules).

Please note, PG Cert and Dip awards in Healthcare Management and Healthcare Quality Management have specific module requirements - please visit Greenwich BioMed Online for more details. Students undertaking the full MSc complete a workplace based project (60 Level 7 credits).

Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert)

Complete two 12 week online modules and gain a PGCert in Biomedical Science (Online) award, a PG Cert in Healthcare Quality Management or a PG Cert in Healthcare Management. Each course comprises two components:

  • Two face-to-face workshops held at the Greenwich Campus:
  • Workshop 1: an introduction to e-learning, your tutor and your course
  • Workshop 2: course consolidation.
  • Guided online study.

Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip)

Complete four 12 week online modules and gain a PGDip in Biomedical Science (Online), Healthcare Quality Management or Healthcare Management.

Master's degree (MSc)

Complete four online modules and a research project to gain an MSc Biomedical Science (Online) award. The MSc can be completed over six years and is validated by the University of Greenwich and accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science.

Project work

Your project typically will be laboratory-based or audit-focused and relevant to your profession and of benefit to your workplace. It normally will include an in-depth review of current literature as well as a critical evaluation of your results and should be of a standard suitable for publication in a scientific journal or equivalent.

You will be supported all the way by a supervisory team which normally includes an expert on the topic from your workplace and an academic supervisor. Together they will guide you through the process of structuring and conducting your research, writing it up and finally submitting it for examination.
