Why choose this course?

• If you have considerable experience working in schools and/or other educational settings, but do not possess Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), this is the course for you.
• If you are working as an unqualified teacher (paid or unpaid), or if you have extensive and recent experience of teaching in a school or college, the Assessment Only Route allows you to be assessed for QTS.
• It may also be suitable for cover supervisors, Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs), or supply teachers.
• It is also a popular route if you are an Overseas Trained Teacher and do not automatically qualify for QTS. Overseas trained teachers who did not gain QTS within the 4 year limit are also eligible to apply.
• It is also available for experienced FE lecturers who are now working in a school and wish to gain QTS.

About this course:

• You'll be expected to demonstrate that you are a reflective practitioner who has met the Teachers’ Standards and are able to demonstrate that you can apply your skills, knowledge and understanding effectively and flexibly in a wide range of school settings. In addition, you will have clearly demonstrated your ability to relate theory to practice and to critically evaluate the fundamental aims and values of education.
• During the assessment period, your supporting school will need to ensure that you have sufficient opportunity to meet the Teachers' Standards. This includes ensuring that you comply with the current requirements of the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL), including a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and 'fitness to teach'.
• The supporting school must not be in Special Measures.
• You will normally be teaching at a school within two hours travelling time from the University of Derby.

Visit the Assessment Only Route to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) page on the University of Derby website for more details!
