Student Profile

Mark Roughley

“The MA Art in Science programme at Liverpool School of Art and Design facilitates discussions and interactions between subjects that have traditionally been studied in isolation. This provides opportunities for innovation and critical creativity, and encourages students to produce transdisciplinary research that may have a real world benefit to society.

Students will explore art-science projects in unexpected forms and work collaboratively with practitioners and researchers across art and science disciplines, including astrophysics, biological sciences and evolutionary anthropology. We have access to a number of different research centres and cultural institutions to support the learning experience, including the Astrophysics Research Institute, the Research Institute for Sports and Exercise Sciences, the Public Health Institute, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and National Museums Liverpool.

Learning on the course takes place through exploration of novel collaborative projects. Different collaborative opportunities enable you to specialise throughout the programme and, on graduation, you will leave with a portfolio of practical skills in areas such as digital visualisation and visual interpretation of complex scientific ideas. You will develop an understanding of the research skills required to be employed as an artist in a scientific field, including an understanding of ethics and public engagement."
