Develop strong technical, analytical, practical and professional skills, alongside specialist skills in biomechanics and performance analysis, physiology and nutrition, strength and conditioning. We offer a first-class suite of research and teaching laboratories alongside excellent facilities offered by our partnership venue at the English Institute of Sport.

  • Acquire an understanding of science and the ability to apply theory to practice in sport and exercise.
  • Work towards British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES) accreditation.
  • Conduct independent research and gain experience as a sport or exercise science consultant.

How you learn

The course is delivered by our expert staff, many of whom support elite athletes and undertake cutting-edge research as part of their day-to-day work. Many of our staff members are accredited by professional bodies such as the British Association for Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES), and we work collaboratively work with our research centre, the Centre for Sport and Exercise Science, to consult, research and teach. You benefit from this experience and these activities, as they allow us to keep course content at the cutting edge, based on our knowledge and experience of sport and exercise science research and delivery.

Applied learning

You are provided with a significant number of opportunities to undertake additional placements, internships and volunteer roles across a range of activities as part of your course, and we help to facilitate a wide range of activities through our networks and contacts. You're encouraged to develop your own experiences to enhance your career pathway too, and you will have the opportunity to undertake the University's Leadership Award.

You have access to an academy-specific employability adviser, who supports staff formally in lectures and provides 1:1 sessions on application writing, preparation for interview, CV development and individually tailored career guidance to help you progress.

Equipment and facilities

Our modules are delivered in our cutting-edge facilities to provide you with an authentic and innovative learning experience. These include

  • industry-leading sport and exercise physiology and biomechanics laboratories
  • performance analysis suite which houses specialist analytical software
  • an environmental chamber, that allows us to simulate extreme environments
  • strength and conditioning suite, that contains the most up-to-date, specialist strength and conditioning equipment.
