The MSc in Applied Public Health is an innovative course which provides a relevant and engaging learning experience for anyone whose work includes some responsibility for the determinants of health. The course has been designed to meet the needs of a wide range of professionals working to achieve improvements in health. It aims to provide participants with the opportunity to develop the skills required to meet existing and emerging challenges in public health.

This postgraduate course covers a range of public health disciplines including health improvement, health protection, research methods, healthy settings, media and communication, epidemiology and global, international, national and local issues relating to public health. There is a strong emphasis on appropriate tools and techniques, evidence based approaches and the application of theory to public health practice.

The programme utilises a range of teaching and learning strategies including lectures, seminars, workshops, action learning, student centred discussions, problem based learning and eLearn.

Assessments are designed to have real world relevance and include: briefing papers, presentations, poster presentations, press releases, project management, etc. The assessment strategy includes course work and assignments, generally with a focus on practice related competencies and skills. The assessment philosophy encourages the development of transferable skills in public health. The course work and assignments have been developed in a real world context to facilitate the production of assessed work which, as far as is practicable, is directly relevant to the workplace and thereby maximises the dissemination of public health knowledge.


There are many opportunities for individuals with qualifications in applied public health. These include career advancement of practitioners already working in public health, and may facilitate progression toward the requirements for registration as a Specialist Practitioner in Public Health. Public health work experience opportunities are also available to students undertaking this course.


The programme offers an applied focus and is designed to deliver the opportunities for participants to develop, enhance and utilise the key and transferable skills which are required to meet the varied and diverse demands of public health work. This involves developing skills in leadership, communication, project management, resource management and evaluation, in addition to collaborate working which cuts across traditional boundaries to deliver improvements to health. It aims to strengthen the capacity of participants to engage in public health work and to work toward reduction in health inequalities. There is an emphasis on participatory and evidence based approaches, utilising action learning to underpin the need to work in partnership and engage in reflective practice. Local, national and international examples are utilised to acknowledge the changing social circumstances, contexts and policy priorities which constantly impinge on public health initiatives.


The learning outcomes of the core modules are mapped against the Royal Society for Public Health standards that are set out in their qualifications and education and training pathways in support of public health practice, as well as the NHS Knowledge and Skills Competency Framework.
