About the course

Are you interested in the relationship between language and society, or in how language is organised in the mind?

Do you want to learn more about how vocabulary works, or about the differences between spoken and written language? Are you interested in how such knowledge might be useful to the design and execution of language learning programmes?

Entry Requirements

We usually require an upper second-class Honours degree, or equivalent, in Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, English Language or another relevant subject (e.g. Translation Studies, TEFL/TESL/TESOL, English Literature, Communication Studies). Appropriate work experience will also be taken into consideration.

Applicants for this programme must also have at least one year’s language teaching experience. Less experienced language teachers will benefit from our MA TESOL programme.

What has been the highlight of your course?

“Firstly, I really appreciated that I have had a personal tutor during the whole semester and we meet in very small group every week and have discussions with my group members. Even all of the questions were answered by my tutor and we felt relaxed to join in with the small group discussions. I also have a supervisor who was very responsible and patient when I prepare my dissertation. Each supervision was helpful and was arranged every one or two weeks. The one-to-one supervision was efficiently conducted and was very useful in my writing.
“Secondly, I could choose the modules that I was really interested in after semester two, which means that after learning the basic courses in semester one, I have the opportunities to choose the modules that I want to participate in. I think this was really flexible and helpful.

What is life like as a student at the University of Birmingham?

“I really like the life when I study in UOB. I always went to the sports and fitness centre with my friends. This sports centre was the biggest and brilliant sports centre that I’d ever visited and I really enjoy doing sports there, especially swimming. Besides, the day-trip which was arranged by my university in the pre-sessional course was very interesting and it provided me more opportunities to make friends. Moreover, the campus itself is very beautiful and it provided me with more opportunities to meet people from different majors. In addition, the 24 hours opened library is really brilliant and I can borrow lots of books when I write my essays and prepare for the dissertations. Last but not least, I get a lot of help from my university, not only in my study, but also in my life, such as my visa issues and my living issues.”

Scholarships

The College of Arts and Law is pleased to offer a number of Home fees-only scholarships for candidates wishing to study full- and part-time masters-level courses from September 2023.

Applications are welcome from UK, EU and Overseas students wishing to study any discipline within the College's five schools:

English, Drama, American and Creative Studies
History and Cultures
Languages, Cultures, Art History and Music
Law
Philosophy, Theology and Religion

Eligibility

These awards are open to UK, EU and Overseas students, studying full-time or part-time campus-based masters-level programmes in the College of Arts and Law.

They are available to students who commence their study at the start of the 2023 academic year. These awards are not available to current Masters students.

International students are eligible to apply, and will receive a reduction in tuition fees equivalent to the Home rate if successful.

Applications for funding can only be considered alongside an application to study.

In order to apply, you must have completed an application to study. You will then need to complete our online funding application form. Your application must also be supported by two references.
