Applied Bioscience Skills for Industry


Course Description

The Highlands and Islands has a burgeoning life sciences research hub. A number of national and international companies have R&D centres and production facilities located in the region. An increasing requirement of industrial scientific sectors is the provision of high quality science graduates who not only possess outstanding laboratory skills but also have a clear understanding of the procedures and legislation that are essential to conduct high class research in an industrial environment.

In response to these needs the University of the Highlands and Islands has developed the MSc Applied Bioscience Skills for Industry in consultation with local bioscience employers. The course has been designed to enhance the ability of participants to appraise scientific problems as well as design and execute appropriate experimental progammes. In doing so scientific research will be placed in the context of matters relating to quality, regulatory requirements and intellectual property.

You will be based at the university’s Division of Health Research, at the Centre for Health Science in Inverness, which houses state-of-the-art laboratories.

Special Features

• A limited number of funded places are available for full-time, Scottish or EU fee status students.
• Loans for tuition fees are available from the Students Award Agency for Scotland (SAAS) for eligible Scotland domiciled and EU students, and loans for living costs for eligible Scottish students.
• The programme will allow you to enhance your laboratory skills through projects undertaken in state-of-the-art facilities.
• You will gain the specific skill sets required in the commercial scientific sector, including an understanding of quality control, regulation and intellectual property.
• The skills developed will be highly marketable in the life sciences, biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.

Quality, Regulation and Intellectual Property in an Industrial Context
Advanced Laboratory Research Project
Quantitative Research and Data Analysis

You will also choose:
Two relevant modules from the existing university postgraduate catalogue (subject to approval by the Programme Leader)
To achieve the award of MSc you must complete a research dissertation.

Funding

The University of the Highlands and Islands is pleased to offer a limited number of places with full tuition fee support for Scottish-domiciled/EU students, studying full time, on this course starting in September 2017 to help talented students join this key growth sector for the Scottish economy. Fees will be funded by the European Social Fund and Scottish Funding Council as part of Developing Scotland’s Workforce in the Scotland 2014-2020 European Structural and Investment Fund Programmes.

Carnegie Cameron Taught Postgraduate Bursaries - 4 Awards

Applicants should already have been offered a place at the University of the Highlands and Islands and should have firmly accepted that offer. Applicants who do not hold an offer of admission by the deadline will not be considered for the award.Criteria
The bursary will be awarded on the basis of academic merit with due consideration also being given to financial circumstances.Selection Procedure
A Selection Committee will meet in June 2016 to review the applications. All applicants will be notified of the outcome by the end of June.

Eligibility

The bursaries will be awarded to applicants who are accepted for admission on either a one year full-time or two year part-time basis for a taught postgraduate programme of study at the University of the Highlands and Islands. To be eligible, applicants must;Be Scottish by birth OR
Be of Scottish extraction (have at least one parent born in Scotland) OR
Have received three full years of secondary, further and/or higher education in Scotland

University of the Highlands and Islands Alumni Discount - No. of awards TBC

A 10% discount in tuition fee is available to degree graduates from the University of the Highlands and Islands on any of our taught postgraduate courses. The alumni discount applies only to the tuition fee element and does not apply to any additional costs which may be required to complete the course. The discount cannot be applied retrospectively and must be requested before or at the time of paying the first year fee.The alumni discount is not available in conjunction with any bursary or scholarship or combinable with any discounts from the university.

2:1 honours degree in a biological or biomedical sciences subject, applicants with a 2:2 honours degree will be considered on an individual basis.Or a postgraduate diploma or professional qualification recognised as being equivalent to an honours degree. This course is currently not available to international students requiring a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK..
