About the course

This course provides postgraduate education in Analytical Bioscience, a specialism which is a major source of employment for scientists.Analytical Bioscience investigates the development and application of advanced analytical techniques in the area of biomedical sciences. This course will provide training in the methodological aspects of biology, which are important in many areas of drug discovery and design such as treatment for cancer and inherited disorders. The interactions between potentially harmful chemicals and living organisms at the molecular and cellular level will also be investigated. This course also investigates the possible sources of error in experimental and instrumental analysis thus allowing the correct interpretation of experimentally-derived scientific data.It is suitable for recent graduates, who did not cover this area in depth during their degree, and for established bioscientists who wish to up-date their knowledge. This course is two thirds taught material and one third research project.

Course detail

We offer the following modules:

  •  Fundamentals of Analytical Science
  •  Data Treatment and Analysis
  •  Advanced Separation Techniques
  •  NMR Spectroscopy and Mass Spectrometry for Analytical Scientists
  •  Biochemical Methods
  •  Practical skills for Analysts
  •  Molecular Medicine
  •  Molecular and Cellular toxicology
  •  Project

The course provides graduates with the opportunity to extend their knowledge in the area of analytical bioscience. The taught part of the course consists of eight theory modules in the areas of analytical biochemistry and relevant analytical chemistry as well as a research project. The research project requires 50 days laboratory work and takes place during the summer.

Career support

Currently there are good employment opportunities for Analytical Bioscientists. Recent graduates from this course are employed in major bioanalytical testing contract research organisations as well as in the pharmaceutical and food industries. A number have undertaken academic research leading to a PhD.
