The Advanced Social Work and Management MSc supports the development of experienced social workers who are in some form of leadership role.

It seeks to consolidate learning in line with the eighth level of the College of Social Work's Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF). At this stage, you are expected to be a specialist with some strategic influence.

There is only one module on the course – the dissertation – and this must relate to management issues for you to be eligible for the award. In all other respects, it is identical to the standard masters.

As a course of continuing professional development (CPD), the Advanced Social Work and Management MSc is not accredited by a Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Body (PSRB). However, you must still be registered as a social worker with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) to be accepted on to the programme.

Course structure

The course is delivered part-time over one to two years. It gives you the opportunity to:

  • research an area of social work practice in depth, for example advanced practice, education or management;
  • develop understanding of, and skills in, research planning in relation to advanced professional practice; and
  • develop further self-directed skills in advanced scholarship.

Areas of study

The only module of the MSc, Research in Advanced Social Work Practice: The Dissertation, is a substantial assessment of Level 7 study. It develops your ability to carry out research independently, to evaluate research and its implications for practice, and to commission and manage the research of other social workers.

You will have the support of a dissertation supervisor throughout your studies.

Careers and employability

This MSc will advance you to the highest levels of the PCF and of social work practice. You will be more likely to secure a position as a strategic social work manager or in work of equal calibre.
