A Royal College of Nursing accredited course, offering advanced level practice for nurse practitioners who provide direct care to patients, clients and service users.
Who is it for?
This course has been designed for experienced Adult or Child nurses working in senior positions or those who are preparing for advanced nurse practitioner, care manager, nurse consultant or clinical leadership roles in primary, secondary, or tertiary healthcare settings.
As part of the course you will be required to complete a clinical work placement with appropriate supervision for physical assessment; therefore applicants must be nurses working in senior clinical positions.
As a student on this course you will learn to work as an expert autonomous practitioner within all fields of healthcare.
You will gain contemporary theoretical and professional skills and knowledge in areas including clinical and direct care practice; leadership and collaborative practice; improving quality and developing practice for the self and others, for advance practice.
You will develop skills in research and applied data analysis as well as a deeper understanding of health and social care settings and the role of an advanced nurse practitioner.
The course will prepare you for new, efficient and ethical ways of working that offer better quality of life and quality of care by placing service users and carers at the centre of decision-making and service redesign.

Students will need to undertake a minimum of 500 supervised supernumerary clinical hours for the duration of the course.
The Clinical Skills Centre at City offers students excellent clinical training facilities. You will have access to a simulated six-bedded high dependency unit (HDU) with realistic equipment including piped oxygen, call bells, medicines and emergency equipment. In addition, medium fidelity simulators and laboratories, including a biology laboratory, will allow you to rehearse skills in preparation for practice in a range of placements, including clinics and people's homes.
The School of Health Science is one of the first health schools in the UK to open a Technology Enabled Care Studio, City TECS. City TECS is specially designed studio flat at our Northampton Square campus, fully equipped with the latest telehealth and telecare technologies providing City students with the unique opportunity to learn how to use the latest and future healthcare technologies while studying.
Teaching and learning
Students will learn from a variety of student-centred and patient focused teaching, learning and assessment strategies aimed at developing and assessing different knowledge, skills and attitudes. Learning strategies involve shared learning across Adult and Child routes with further consideration and specialisation for intensive branch specific tutorials.
Students have the opportunity to work within their practice or other health care settings, and learn from lecturers who are experienced advanced nurse practitioners engaged in active clinical practice. There will be extensive use of City's Virtual Learning Platform - Moodle - for a more interactive learning experience.
Assessment strategies include coursework, examinations, reports, seminar presentations, portfolios, skills schedules and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs). Students may be expected to take part in formative assessment activities during the modules in addition to the summative assessments for each module.
The course can only be undertaken on a part-time basis due to the clinical stream required. Students will usually attend lectures one day a week and consolidate their practice for the rest of the week.
In addition students will need to undertake a minimum of 500 supervised supernumerary clinical hours for the duration of the course.

Elective modules -Advanced Physical Assessment, critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning across the lifespan (30 credits) -Independent and supplementary non-medical prescribing (30 credits) -Pathophysiological principles for advanced practice (15 credits)
As a graduate students will be able to influence nursing practice at both direct and indirect levels through the development of services and the application of research to clinical practice. The course prepares students for a range of roles including advanced nurse practitioner, nurse consultant and senior nurse manager in all healthcare settings working across the lifespan. Successful completion of the course fulfils the requirements for advanced practitioner roles in a range of health and social care contexts and qualifies students to apply for research posts and to conduct independent research.
This programme has been accredited by the RCN Centre for Professional Accreditation until September 2018.
SHS International Excellence Scholarship

The School of Health Sciences (SHS), together with the University, has identified Postgraduate Programmes as a priority area for strategic expansion and part of this incentive is to increase the number of international (non-EU) students studying one of the Schools MSc programmes.We are therefore offering a number of SHS International Excellence Scholarships of up to £2,000 for students starting one of our MSc programmes in September 2016 and January 2017.Scholarship awards are confirmed on a rolling basis as applications are received, and you can expect to hear from us whether your scholarship application is successful when you are offered a place on the programme. Decisions will be final and made by a panel led by the Associate Dean of Postgraduate Studies. The award will be deducted from the September 2016 tuition fee instalment of a full-time student. For part-time students, half the amount will be deducted from the September 2016 tuition fee, and half from the September 2017 tuition fee.
Value of Scholarship(s)
This scholarship will be awarded to international postgraduate students showing academic and/or clinical/professional excellence, who are registered full or part-time, on one of the MSc programmes offered by the School of Health Sciences. It is only available to students applying for the full MSc programme (not the PG Cert or PG Diploma). Students cannot be in receipt of more than one scholarship/bursary.
Applicants will automatically be considered for the scholarship on applying for their course.Awards are competitive and will be awarded for academic and clinical excellence as well as for exceptional innovation in enterprise as evidenced within your personal statement.
Applicants should hold a second-class honours degree or the equivalent from an international institution. Applicants without a degree may be considered on the basis of professional experience and/or at the discretion of the programme director. Applicants should be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council or a similar professional/statutory body with two years' relevant clinical experience and currently working in a healthcare setting. Relevant work experience, combined with a demonstrable ability to study at degree level, will also be considered.
