This full-time Master's programme will deepen your technical ability, broaden your understanding of other branches of engineering, and enhance your research skills.

It is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and develops leadership and managerial strengths that can lead to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

You’ll develop an advanced understanding of:

  • Mechanics
  • Materials selection
  • Manufacturing
  • Mechatronics
  • Computer-aided engineering design
  • Developing integrated mechanical systems

You'll learn the principles underpinning the design and control of mechanical systems, along with computational and simulation methods used to ensure the reliability and robustness of mechanical systems.

You will use industry-standard computational tools and analysis packages for the analysis, design and evaluation of complex systems, and numerical methods for modelling and analysing engineering problems.

Professional accreditation

The programme is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. It fully meets the exemplifying academic benchmark requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

What you will study

Core Modules

Option Modules

Learning and assessment

Your learning experiences are varied – a mixture of:

  • formal lectures
  • tutorials and seminars
  • group work
  • an individual project

Independent study is supported by our Virtual Learning Environment, Blackboard. Reading lists and suggested resources for independent study provide you with clear direction, while regular contact hours and informal feedback throughout the programme provide all the support you may need.

Facilities

You will have access to a wide range of laboratory and computing facilities to support your learning. We use industry standard software for teaching all aspects of Computer Aided Design and analysis.

You will use specialist automotive engineering laboratories equipped with test vehicles, a chassis dynamometer, and engine test beds.

We have dedicated 3D printing/ manufacturing facilities/workshops which you will use for project work. Over your program of study you will have access to our world class polymer processing and material characterisation laboratories.

Career prospects

Mechanical Engineering is a very diverse sector and graduate engineers are in high demand around the world. Our graduates find employment in a wide range of engineering and manufacturing environments, from the aerospace, transportation and automotive sectors, to construction and manufacturing, to process industries such as oil, gas and utility companies - as well as research and development. The sector offers a wide range of exciting careers in positions such as:

  • Computer Aided Design Engineer
  • Product Development Engineer
  • Modelling and Simulation Analyst
  • Project Manager

Recent graduates from this programme have gone onto work for Jaguar Land Rover, Ford Motor Company, Horiba MIRA, Cummins, Precision Casting Corporation, Denso Marston, Carnaud MetalBox, and Sulzer.

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. Students are encouraged to access this support at an early stage and to use the extensive resources on the Careers website.

Discussing options with specialist advisers helps to clarify plans through exploring options and refining skills of job-hunting. In most of our programmes there is direct input by Career Development Advisers into the curriculum or through specially arranged workshops.

Study support

You will have a Personal Academic Tutor, normally your individual project supervisor, to support you through regular meetings and interactive activities, acting as an independent source of advice and guidance on making the transition to Higher Education and assisting you with any questions or problems you may encounter.

In addition to standard study support through taught sessions, our Virtual Learning Environment allows you to access resources, participate in group work and submit work from anywhere in the world 24/7.

University central services are rich with support teams to assist you with every aspect of your journey through our degree programmes. From our Careers Service, through our strong Student Union, to our professional and efficient Student Finance team, there are always friendly faces ready to support you and provide you with the answers that you need.

Research

Our research underpins every level of your programme of study. You will be taught by academics who are working at the forefront of their engineering discipline. This enables us explore with you how theoretical principles are being applied to solve real world challenges.

Your individual project gives you access to our research facilities and provides you with an opportunity to become involved in a much larger research project being carried out with our industrial partners.

Our Mechanical and Process Engineering Research Group undertakes a range of fundamental and applied research projects.
