Advanced Lymphoedema Management - PGCert


Course Description

This programme will provide the advancing healthcare professional wishing to study at Masters level the opportunity to learn the theory and practice of advanced skills in the management of complex lymphoedema, including the Casley-Smith technique of Manual Lymphatic Drainage.

Why this programme

-The first course will provide students with the necessary skills and the theory underpinning these and explore the evidence base. The second course will facilitate the application of these skills in more complex situations and in the context of delivering and managing a service. t will facilitate further development of skills in analysing and synthesising clinical findings and evidence for decision-making at an advanced level.
-The programme combines workplace learning with part-time attendance and on-line learning to explore and contextualise contemporary issues and the latest research evidence. It will prepare students to the level of a health care professional Band 7 Lymphoedema Advanced Practitioner as proposed in the Lymphoedema Framework Template for Management (Sneddon, 2007).
-This specialist framework is based on the Skills for Health Career Framework (2007 http://www.skillsforhealth.org.uk) and the Knowledge and Skills Framework (DoH 2004).

Programme structure

Managing Complex Lymphoedema (40 credits) and Lymphoedema Advanced Practice (20 credits) combine to give the Postgraduate Certificate in Lymphoedema Management.

Managing Complex Lymphoedema
This course provides the advancing health care professional wishing to study at Masters level, an opportunity to learn the advanced skills and knowledge required to manage patients with complex lymphoedema. The course will equip students with the necessary theory underpinning these skills and explore the evidence base and facilitate development of decision-making skills at an advanced level. Learning of theory is consolidated with workplace and on-line learning to do develop the skills of an advancing practitioner in this field

Lymphoedema Advanced Practice
This course provides the advancing health care professional, wishing to study at Masters level, with an opportunity to extend the skills and knowledge of the Managing Complex Lymphoedema course to a range of complex lymphoedema patients in the context of the most contemporary evidence and themes. The course will facilitate the application of advanced skills in more complex situations and in the context of delivering and managing a service. It will facilitate further development of skills in analysing and synthesising clinical findings and evidence for decision-making at an advanced level. Masterclasses, seminars and workshops support further development of the skills of an advancing practitioner in this field and is consolidated with workplace and on-line learning.

Lord Kelvin/Adam Smith Scholarships - 10 Awards

The prestigious Lord Kelvin/Adam Smith PhD Scholarship scheme was established in 2007 to support the development of innovative, boundary-crossing research at the University of Glasgow. The scheme supports new partnerships between members of staff and will offer outstanding research students both from home and abroad the opportunity to undertake doctoral training in the context of cutting edge interdisciplinary research projects. The Kelvin Smith PhD Scholarships are project-based and the projects will be listed from the beginning of December each year.Each scholarship will run for up to 4 years and will provide the successful students with a full fee waiver from the host College and an annual stipend at UK Research Council recommended rates (estimated to be £14, 002 for 2015/16). In addition the project will benefit from an annual consumables budget for research and travel costs of up to £5300.

Of the 20 potential projects advertised below only 10 scholarships will be awarded based on the quality of the applicant and the project. Aga Khan Foundation - International Scholarship Programme - No. of awards TBC

The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from select developing countries who have no other means of financing their studies, in order to prepare them for employment, primarily within the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).
The Foundation gives priority to requests for Master's level courses but may consider applications for PhD programmes, in the case of outstanding students who are highly recommended for doctoral studies by their professors and who need a PhD for the fulfilment of their career objectives (academic or research oriented).
Applications for short-term courses are not considered; neither are applications from students who have already started their course of study.To be eligible applicants must
- Be nationals of the following countries: Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Syria, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Madagascar and Mozambique. May also be considered those originally from these countries but currently living in France, Portugal, UK, USA and Canada, who are interested in development-related studies and who have no other means of financing their education.
- Demonstrate consistently excellent academic records
- Show evidence of genuine financial need
- Have obtained admission to a highly reputable university or programme of study
- Establish relevance of the field of study to AKDN’s focus areas
- Provide thoughtful and coherent educational and career plans, their extra-curricular interests and achievements, potential to achieve their goals and likelihood to succeed in a foreign academic environment.
- Have some years of work experience in their field of interest.Preference is given to students under 30 years of age.Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant : 50% loan basis.
The Foundation assists students with tuition fees and living expenses only. The cost of travel is not included in AKF scholarships. Funding for PhD programmes is only provided for the first two years of study, after which the students are expected to find alternative sources of assistance. Financial assistance is provided according to the needs of students, but the International Scholarship Programme must be considered a lender of last resort. Preference is given to those who have been able to secure some funding from alternative sources.

Application Procedure

Application forms can be obtained as of 1st January from AKF offices or Aga Khan Education Services/Boards in the applicant’s country of current residence.
The application procedures of AKF's International Scholarship Programme are decentralised. Completed applications should be returned to the agency from which the form was obtained. They should not be sent to Geneva.
Applicants should be prepared to be interviewed by local Scholarship Committees about their financial situation, their academic performance, extra-curricular achievements and career plans. Applications and Interview reports of shortlisted candidates are sent to Geneva for the final selection.
The annual Scholarship Selection Meeting takes place in late June or early July and the Aga Khan Foundation notifies all students of the outcome of their application shortly thereafter.

Entry Requirements

Professional qualification of either Registered Nurse or Allied Health Professional (physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Podiatry, Radiography) or Medical Practitioner. Successful completion of a recognized lymphoedema course to the level equivalent to the University of Glasgow Graduate Certificate in Lymphoedema Practice. Preferably a minimum of 2 years clinical experience post qualifying. Currently working with people with lymphoedema/chronic oedema OR have confirmed pre-arranged access to such patients for the period of the course. A good first degree or equivalent (evidence of academic work within the past 5 years).
