Chemical Engineers have always been in demand across a multitude of sectors and the need for well qualified skills engineers with capabilities to adapt their skills across a wide range of industries has never been greater.

The programme gives you further strengths in separation and purification, pollution control, dynamics of fluid, upstream processing (oil and gas), loss of containment in the environment, reactor design, design layout and materials, risk analysis and human analysis of risk in process and design engineering. From the programme you can work in chemical engineering science, design, practice, clean energies, process safety, management and environmental protection areas. You can also work in oil and gas processing fields, petrochemicals, fine chemicals, beverages, environmental waste management, materials, agrochemicals or combinations. Many of these industries require new ways to work in order to meet strict legal targets and others are in a period of growth in terms of new knowledge.

Your skills are also much in demand to define specific chemical engineering aspects within smart technology where a lot of work is going on to bring continuous improvement and innovation to challenging aspects of applied chemical engineering processes such as detection of failure for example. You could be part of Industry 4.0 the new revolution which is a game changer in how we manage our environment and the new technology presents endless possibilities to develop chemical sensors.

Aberdeen offers strong focus on gaining the academic, practical and design capabilities needed to push the boundaries of engineering in this discipline and allow you to really make the most of a postgraduate qualification to further your career and possibilities in life. You can work in industries such as process safety to design elements to keep people safe and reduce risk, clean energy to measure and prevent pollution, management and environmental protection all of which you can adapt to manufacturing, process and chemical industries, food and drinks, beauty products and many other consumer goods industries.

Why study at Aberdeen?

  • Aberdeen is the oil and gas capital of Europe with ties to the industry since the inception of the industry in the 1970s. The university offers research and advisory board led programmes. Much of this learning is now applied to many other industries to develop improvements to risk, process and management.
  • Two Nobel Prize winners in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering innovated in radioactivity and isotopes and partition chromatography in a well developed area of research strength
  • You gain academic rigour to allow you to adapt skills and knowledge to a range of industries whilst having the capability to innovate and design and work for current industries to develop new methods of working or start your own enterprise.
