Course content

Learn about anatomy, infectious diseases, how poverty impacts on health, how best to break bad news, and about the ethics of being an adult nurse in today’s society. Develop practical skills, from taking blood pressure to trauma management and injection techniques.

Our postgraduate diploma (PgDip) in Adult Nursing is an accelerated two-year training programme. When you graduate, you can register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as an adult nurse.

You’ll spend half of this course on clinical placements, to help you feel prepared for the challenges you might face in your nursing practice. You’ll experience a range of settings, from operating theatres and nursing homes, to community health centres and outpatient departments.

When you’re at university, you’ll have a mix of lectures, online lessons, one-to-one tutorials, practical skills sessions and workshops.

Working in small groups in our Clinical Simulation Suite, you’ll learn skills such as how to intubate a patient and how to give emergency care. It’s here that you’ll work on simulations of a patient’s journey from admission to discharge.

Scenarios that we’ve set our students in the past include major trauma management, with a patient involved in a motorbike accident who needs stabilising, emergency care with a patient who has suffered a heart attack, and ward management to show you the daily life of a nurse working a shift on a busy ward.

As this is an accelerated course, before you begin you’ll need to submit a portfolio of evidence to show that you’ve completed a minimum of 450 hours of care-related practical experience, as well as 450 hours of relevant academic study. (A registered professional will need to verify your portfolio of accredited prior learning.)
