Why study this programme?

Additive Manufacturing, or 3D printing, is an exciting new field, which uses a range of diverse technologies for equally diverse applications. It is now possible to print everything from aerospace parts to biological tissue and even houses! This course is designed to give you the skills required to utilise these new technologies to their full potential.

You will have access to the Additive Manufacturing lab in the new Engineering Innovation Centre, housing some of the latest AM equipment. Learning will be largely project based, with hands-on use of equipment and software. The course will include relevant industry visits, guest speakers and industry related projects.

You will work alongside our research active staff with the possibility of continuing on to PhD research. Students will be given the opportunity to build their own 3D printer (to keep) and develop new or enhanced Additive Manufacturing technologies

The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) is located within one of the most intense engineering and manufacturing areas in the UK. The advanced manufacturing sector in Lancashire employs around 73,300 people, accounting for 12% of total employment.

The School of Engineering has links with major employers in aerospace, automotive and civil engineering including BAE SYSTEMS and JLR, as well as sector support and supply chain organisations, such as the NW Aerospace Alliance and the Northern Automotive Alliance.

This course will help students to implement an AM strategy within a company or help prepare students to start their own AM related business.

Opportunities

Students will have the chance for international travel, to participate in conferences and research publications. On successful completion of this programme, students will be eligible to apply for progression to world-leading research degrees within the Jost Institute for Tribotechnology. The course is suitable for engineers who have recently graduated as well as those with experience who are seeking to extend their knowledge, or update their qualifications with a view to promotion or other new position. The award covers both technical and commercial aspects of additive manufacturing. It will help students gain employment in high value industries such as aerospace, or start their own AM related businesses.
