On this course you will learn to design and create using a variety of processes. You will explore mediums such as digital craft and 3D modelling, and design for real and virtual spaces. You will learn transferable skills so that you can apply your talents across a range of design sectors.
Smart technologies are changing how we use space and interact with our surroundings. You will study these technologies and consider how they are changing the design industry. You will work with professional designers to create digital experience and learn from their knowledge.
Entry onto this Master’s Degree requires a minimum of a 2:2 Undergraduate honours degree in a related discipline.
If your honours degree is not in a related discipline but you can provide a strong portfolio of visual work, your application will be considered.
If you're an international student, you'll need to demonstrate experience, or qualifications equivalent to those above.
Established over 175 years ago, York St John University is a small, friendly university which is located in the heart of the historic city of York. The campus comprises of a blend of old and new buildings and the feeling of community is one of the things our students love the most.
Applying for a scholarship
Applications should be made through the Research degree apply page.
As part of this you will be asked to write research proposal of up to 1,000 words, which should include the following:
What do you see as the main research questions you would address?
What would be your methodological approach to the research?
What makes you the right person to carry out this research?
Please note that CVs will not be accepted in place of the application form.
Scholarships are grants given to a student that you do not need to pay back.

Alumni who graduated in 2019, 2020 or 2021 from full or part time study at York St John University or one of our Partner Colleges on a postgraduate course can also receive a scholarship for one of our research degrees.
If you were awarded, you can get
Distinction 50% reduction in fees
Merit 35% reduction in fees
These scholarships apply to both our postgraduate taught and research courses (see exclusions below). They apply to courses at our York or London campuses.
These scholarships do not apply to our Physiotherapy (Pre-registration) MSc, Occupational Therapy (Pre-registration) MSc, Professional Doctorate in Counselling or any of our PCGE courses.
The Progression scholarship cannot be combined with the Alumni scholarship fee reduction.
Alumni who graduated from full or part time study at York St John University or one of our Partner Colleges in 2019, 2020 or 2021 can get a scholarship to cover their postgraduate course fees. The scholarship you can get is based on your undergraduate degree award.
If you were awarded, you can get
1st class honours 50% reduction in fees
2:1 (upper second class honours) 35% reduction in fees
2:2 (lower second class honours) 20% reduction in fees
Applying for these scholarships
These scholarships are automatically awarded when our alumni apply to eligible courses. You do not need to make an additional application.

All of our alumni can get a 10% reduction in their postgraduate course fees. It does not matter when you graduated.
The Alumni Scholarship does not apply to our Physiotherapy (Pre-registration) MSc, Occupational Therapy (Pre-registration) MSc or the Professional Doctorate in Counselling.
The Alumni scholarship cannot be combined with the Progression scholarship.
