This course is intended for postgraduate students from a wide variety of backgrounds. It will equip you with the necessary theory, practical knowledge and skills required to design, evaluate and implement interactive computing systems.

As computing applications become ever more pervasive, it is widely recognised by industry that the success or failure of this technology is very considerably influenced by the "human factor".

It is increasingly considered essential that end users - as well as wider stakeholders - are accounted for in the design process. In recent years, attempts to understand the complexities of user-system interactions associated with modern computer systems have led to the emergence of the discipline of interactive systems design.

Organizations of all sizes and in all sectors are increasingly dependent on computer-based Information Systems to drive day-to-day operations. The intelligent and creative use of IT also enables innovation in both products and services, and can underpin the achievement of competitive advantage.

This course combines the study of Information Systems with Operations Management, emphasising the creative potential of information technology for innovation and change. It provides a thorough grounding in the principles and practice of information systems.

Students will also be educated in the key operations management challenges in contemporary organisations, including the challenges in supply chain management.

The course provides progressive learning towards the frontiers of knowledge in both Information Systems and Operations management. The structure of the programme allows students to focus on advanced developments in the areas that meet their specific interests and career aspirations. In addition to the taught modules, the course requires a major individual project, undertaken over the Summer term. The project integrates knowledge, methods and practical skills, and is often undertaken with an outside organization. This course is designed to be undertaken by those who need to apply the knowledge of the role of human factors/ergonomics in the design, evaluation and use of interactive systems.

It will provide an understanding of the key issues related to the design, evaluation and use of user centered technologies and provide you with additional resources to facilitate the learning process.

The distance learning format means tht most of the material and background reading can be undertaken in your own time but with access to and support from University staff.

The course consists of two 30 credit modules, each studied over 6 months.

The MRes in Bioinformatics involves the use of computational methods to study molecular evolution using sequence data now available in online databases. Research areas within which projects are available include: the use of secondary structure models to investigate evolutionary relationships in the molluscs; evolution of mobile DNAs; studies on the evolution of spider silk gene families; the application of molecular clocks to microbial sequences, in particular the investigation of rate variation in foraminifera lineages and the estimation of the age of viral radiations.

Once the School has your application and accompanying documents (eg referees reports, transcripts/certificates) your application will be matched to an appropriate academic supervisor and considered for an offer of admission.

COURSE STRUCTURE
The MRes degree course consists of two elements:
160 credits of assessed work. The assessed work will normally be based entirely on a research project and will be the equivalent of around 10 ½ months full-time research work. AND
20 credits of non-assessed generic training. Credits can be accumulated from any of the courses offered by the Graduate School. http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/gradschool/research-training/index.phtml The generic courses should be chosen by the student in consultation with the supervisor(s).

ASSESSMENT
The research project will normally be assessed by a dissertation of a maximum of 30,000 to 35,000 words, or equivalent as appropriate*. The examiners may if they so wish require the student to attend a viva.
*In consultation with the supervisor it maybe possible for students to elect to do a shorter research project and take a maximum of 40 credits of assessed modules.

The School of Life Sciences will provide each postgraduate research student with a laptop for their exclusive use for the duration of their studies in the School.
