The processes of design thinking - research, analysis, evaluation, creativity, craft and production - across all specialisms within visual communication are central to this course.

You'll have the chance to learn in our Research & Development labs that we've developed as a result of our partnerships with organisations, practitioners and industry. The labs allow you to take part in learning, teaching, research, innovation and professional development within visual communication.

The delivery of the programme is split into three stages: PG Cert, PG Dip and MA. Through the completion of modules you will attain your MA in Visual Communication.

The modules are designed to echo the three stages of development: your proficiency, your expertise and your mastery.

The PG Cert and PG Dip stages contain a 40 credit aspect and a 20 credit aspect. The Masters level is made up of a single 60 credit module.

Students will be actively encouraged to take part in debates about the professional, educational, political and cultural implications of fashion promotion in modern societies around the world. The course encourages different research methods to investigate the branding and promotion of fashion through marketing, advertising, events management, publicity or public relations.

As a graduate, individuals will be able to apply their knowledge and practical skills to fashion promotion, as well as sophisticated marketing and advertising concepts.

The course focuses on ability to develop and manage project proposals and studies related to commercial fashion, fashion communication and fashion promotion. Students can adopt either an entrepreneurial, academic or creative approach to their studies.

Course Structure

The course runs for 12 months (full-time, September start) and is split into three stages, each lasting at least 10 weeks. Assessment is of a practical nature, including assignments, reports, presentations and examinations.

Each module consists a mixture of lectures, seminars, workshops, online interactive activities and assessments. Typically each module is taught on a weekly basis during term time, consisting of three hours per module per week split into one, two or three-hour sessions. A total of 9 contact hours per week is typical over a 10 week period for Stage 1 and Stage 2. Stage 3 will consist of three hours of contact time per week, supplemented with project supervision meetings as and when required for the Major Project.

Each 20-credit module is designed to require 200 hours of study, of which 30 hours or more will be via direct contact with module tutors. The remaining time will consist of independent learning, which will be structured with guidance from the module tutor to incorporate activities such as online learning, reading and group or team based work.

Emphasis will be placed on the group as a resource for learning. There will be group discussion of practical management situations and problems, making use of case studies, problem situations and scenarios and, where relevant, the participants' own experiences.

Assessment on the programme is designed to be an integral part of your learning process, enhancing and demonstrating your knowledge and practice. Formative feedback will be provided to you through a combination of self-reflection, peer group and tutor feedback. Summative assessments will provide a measure of the extent to you have achieved the learning outcomes of the modules.

Assessment within the modules will take various forms, including coursework assignments, reports, controlled assessment, examinations and the dissertation or project. You may be required to defend the dissertation or project through a viva, drawing on the skills developed in the programme.

Knowledge, understanding and intellectual skills are acquired through a variety of practical learning and teaching approaches, these may include: formal lectures, interactive tutorial sessions, laboratory sessions, seminars, residential courses and directed independent learning activities.

Analytical skills are developed through coursework tasks that encourage creativity and problem solving using a range of systems and technologies relevant to commercial web service delivery. Group tutorial and practical work are also utilised in programme delivery. Learners are assessed both formatively and summatively by a number of methods.

Formative assessment occurs throughout the programme and involves feedback from peers and tutors and individual reflection. Feedback on work in progress is available prior to the submission of summative assessments.

A range of summative assessment methods are employed involving both individual and group assignments, written coursework assignments and practical project work, laboratory sessions, tests and examinations.

Summative assessment methods for all modules are identified in a module guide and, for coursework, assessment details and criteria are specified in each assignment brief.

As well as developing and applying skills through assignment work, the Research Methods module in the second semester introduces research skills in preparation for the dissertation. Course summary

The MA Media Production course gives you the opportunity to kick start or further your career in the television and radio industries. The course offers a clear progression pathway for students who have already completed undergraduate studies in television or radio.

For those who already have industry experience, or are looking to change career path, the course provides the chance to learn additional skills and apply professional media practice to your existing resume.

You can study the MA Media Production full time over one year or part time over two years. This flexibility means it is suitable for those wishing to enter the industry or who are already forging a career in broadcasting and want to attain a well-respected academic qualification to complement their skills.

Course structure

Over the year you will study four modules, each of which consists of 10 class sessions in which students will be introduced to topics through lectures, seminar discussions and workshop activities. Each week students are set independent study tasks, often based upon production activities, and there are two further weeks of directed study.

There will often be guest lectures from leading practitioners in the field and we place a strong emphasis on lecturer and peer review of student presentations and work-in-progress. These sessions are supported by structured material available on the university's Moodle online system.

Many modules make significant use of new social media and students will be asked frequently to contribute to forums, write blogs, or produce podcasts to chart personal and professional development and to engage with the work of others. Your own professional development is an important element throughout the course.
