Robust scientific evidence is a critical tool for conservation scientists responding to the challenges of mitigating biodiversity loss. This course focuses on developing investigative research skills while addressing applied questions in wildlife behaviour and conservation.

The course provides a strong foundation, giving you the opportunity to develop a career in academic or applied wildlife science. Our lecturers work with a diverse range of study species, including mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and invertebrates, both in the wild and ex situ. Members of the team are recognised as conservation specialists by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and manage two European Endangered Species Programmes.

Why Study Biological Sciences: Wildlife Behaviour and Conservation with us?

Our lecturers work with a diverse range of study species, including mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and invertebrates, both in the wild and ex situ. Members of the team are recognised as conservation specialists by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and manage two European Endangered Species Programmes.

Your project will contribute directly to one of our partnerships with national and international in situ and ex situ conservation programmes.

Your individual supervisor will guide your acquisition of professional skills and facilitate networking and engagement in your specialist field. Our proactive, diverse and expanding research community provides extensive opportunities for peer-learning and collaboration in conservation research.

What will I learn?

A compulsory wildlife research methods taught module provides advanced training in core specialisations, including project design, field techniques, statistical analysis and geographical information systems.

You will select a further taught specialist module relevant to your research project, which may include conservation genetics, wildlife behaviour or wildlife health.

The individual research project is undertaken throughout the year and is the primary focus of this course.

International Field Projects

  1. Study of Desert Birds on Lanzarote: An Example of how Geodiversity Underpins Biodiversity (with Lanzarote Island Council and Desert Watch).
  2. Habitat Usage of Re-introduced Scarlet Macaws on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica (with ASOMACAO Friends of the Scarlet Macaw).

Please note these projects will require a student contribution in addition to course fees of a maximum of £3000.

Desk based Projects

  1. Using atlas data to estimate bird density and occupancy.
  2. Conservation of the endangered Ibis species in Cambodia’s dry forests - with Wildlife Conservation Society.
  3. The global conservation status and threats to Rails (Rallidae) - with Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and Mississippi State University.

How will I be taught?

Teaching is delivered through lecturers, laboratory practicals, field trips and seminars supplemented by online materials such as discussion boards and analytical exercises.

You will contribute to research seminars, a journal club and tutorials.

Modules consist of 32 hours of taught activities and 168 hours of self study.

How will I be assessed?

Taught modules are assessed through coursework assignments.

The dissertation projects consists of at least 1,400 hours' study to produce a paper suitable for peer review publication.

This course focuses on developing investigative laboratory-based research skills while addressing theoretical and applicable questions in stem cells and regenerative biology. The course provides an intensive research-led environment, which will give you the opportunity to develop a career in academic or applied biomedical or biological sciences.

Our lecturers have specialist knowleadge and work with a diverse range of skill sets that have application in the field of stem cell research and regenerative biology.

The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Life Sciences at Chester is unique in having academic staff who’s research involves a variety of relevant model organisms. As well as humans, the team researches into fundamental biology of a variety of other mammallian species, birds, fish, amphibians and invertebrates. Students undertaking the MRes are able to draw on this expertise.

What will I learn?

In the module Models of Regenerative Biology, you will attend lectures, small group teaching and practical sessions relating to:

- various model systems of regeneration, with cell culture based models and in vivo systems, e.g. planaria; responses to injury;
- regulatory factors governing tissue regeneration;
- aspects of regenerative medicine.

In the module on Stem Cells and Tissue Engineering, you will attend lectures, small group teaching and practical sessions relating to:

- how to define stem cells;
- stem cell culture and maintenance;
- the principles of tissue engineering;
- the application of stem cell and tissue engineering, e.g. in the clinic or in drug screening and development.

The individual research project is undertaken following completion of these two taught modules and is the primary focus of this course.

This MRes has been designed to enhance knowledge of recent advancements in cellular and molecular biology, as well as to develop subject-specific practical and analytical skills. In addition, you will gain experience of undertaking an extended period of research (6-7 months), which will aid your career progression as a molecular bio-scientist.

The programme will involve undertaking two core 20 credit taught modules, followed by an extended period of laboratory research, and submission of a Research report and review, 140 credits.

Followed by an extended period of laboratory research (140 credits) in an area that allies with the interests of our academic staff.

How will I be taught?

The two taught modules will each comprise of a series of lectures, small group discussion sessions, workshops and practical classes. Nominally each taught module has about 30-40 of contact hours associated with them. The rest of the time allocated for these modules will be for further reading, coursework preparation and revision.

The remainder of the programme will comprise of the 6 to 7 month research project which will involve regular meetings and guidance with your research supervisor. This is followed by the preparation of two reports.

How will I be assessed?

The research dissertation will be assessed by the production of a research report in the format of a scientific paper and a research review (80%).

The taught modules will be assessed by the production of practical and theoretical reports and class tests (20%).

With the rapid decline of biodiversity, wildlife conservation is a crisis discipline. This urgency has led to growing local, national and international demand for specialists with academic and practical conservation skills.

Why Study Wildlife Conservation with us?

We aim to build on and consolidate your existing skills/knowledge, and offer exposure to advanced concepts and practical applications in wildlife conservation. This will be done through exploration of our expertise in field and lab-based research on key species and habitats, in the UK and further afield.

The course culminates in the Research Dissertation, which will be assessed through your production of two publishable scientific articles.

The content of the course is mapped to The Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board Speciality Training Curriculum for Immunology, and Speciality Training Curriculum for Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine.

If biomedical or clinical research is your interest, successful completion of the MSc will allow you to directly register onto PhD study and join our team of researchers at the Institute of Medicine.

What will I learn?

Our course investigates the different types of infection, our immune response to them and various complications. You will review current guidelines and their evidence base in the therapeutic management of infections, and explore potential new therapies. You will also study vaccination protocols and explore novel immunological approaches.

Seminars and tutorials will be held with various healthcare professionals and clinical researchers.

How will I be taught?

Our course consists of taught modules and a Research Dissertation.

We deliver taught modules as three-day intensive courses to facilitate attendance from students in employment. Weekly support sessions and journal club supplement learning – all held in our modern facilities in Bache Hall on the Countess of Chester Hospital Campus.

The aim of our MRes is to give you a supportive environment in which to develop and utilise your research skills in specific areas of interest.

Why Study Sport and Exercise Sciences (MRes) with us?

You will be taught and supervised by experienced, research-active staff. A large proportion of their research is internationally recognised and has direct impact with real-world practice (i.e. performance, health policy, teaching). Many staff are also engaged with external partners, including sports governing bodies, professional sports clubs and health trusts, which provide applied and research opportunities for students.

The above features ensure that you will be provided with appropriate research and applied training that aims to enhance your employability.

What will I learn?

Extensive research training, using both quantitative and qualitative approaches, will involve proposal development, application for research ethics and completion of an empirical research project. In addition, you will have the opportunity to develop practical and theoretical knowledge to inform best practice and improve your employability.

How will I be taught?

Teaching will involve lectures, seminars, practical, group work, and role-play.

You will have access to dedicated sport and exercise science laboratories, sport facilities, a library and IT laboratories.

Contact hours are 200 hours’ study per taught module, including 40 hours’ contact time; and 1,400 hours’ study for the research project, including 40 hours’ tutor contact.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed via written assessments and oral presentations for taught modules, and via a literature review, journal article and oral presentation for the research project. Note there are no formal examinations.

Why Study Exercise and Nutrition Science with us?

The aims of this postgraduate course are for you to develop:
- a critical understanding of the concepts and controversies in exercise and nutrition science
- a scientific and enquiring approach to the study of contemporary exercise and nutrition issues
- research skills for the critical investigation of exercise and nutrition topics.

The course is highly flexible, allowing you to study full time or part time to suit your personal and work commitments. Flexibility is achieved through the delivery of modules over three-day blocks followed by eight weeks of campus – or home-based learning. This allows students nationally and internationally to attend the course. Our course is delivered by a team of experienced academics and also practitioners who work in high-profile areas.

What will I learn?

The modules aim to enable you to develop a critical knowledge and understanding of fundamental and contemporary issues in relation to physical activity and health and nutrition in health and disease, as well as applying these principles to sporting populations. A variety of module options means the course can be tailored to suit your needs.

Lectures are complemented by practical sessions in well-equipped physiology (BASES-accredited), biology and food nutrition laboratories.

How will I be taught?

Teaching is mainly by lectures interspersed with laboratory practicals, group discussion, seminars and interactive computer-based sessions.
There are 25-30 contact hours per module. You will also undertake campus- or home-based learning and tutorials (face to face or online).

How will I be assessed?

Each module requires 200 hours of study and is assessed via a 4,000- word written assignment or its equivalent – e.g. poster presentation. There are no examinations.

Following the completion of six taught modules, if you are an MSc student you will be required to undertake a personal research project.

The MSc Sports Sciences course has been designed to enable you to develop a range of discipline-specific abilities and apply them to selected areas of special interest for more advanced study of the physiological, performance analysis, strength and conditioning, or biomechanical factors that might influence sports performance. Excellent collaborative links with elite national and international athletes and teams will also give you the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience of delivering sports science.

Why Study Sports Sciences (with named pathways) with us?

As well as increasing your theoretical and empirical knowledge within the area, our course comprises core modules that are designed to provide opportunities to enhance your abilities in a range of transferable skills, and also to develop the basic competencies that will aid your personal development should you wish to pursue accreditation in the future, for example with BASES, UKSCA or ISPAS.

The course is taught by an experienced team of tutors who have specialist research interests and publications within the subdiscipline pathways. All teaching has an applied focus, with full use made of the BASES-accredited sports science laboratories.

The above critical elements of teaching excellence and research, combined with the applied practical experience of many of the staff who have worked with national and international athletes and teams, means that during all lectures you will not only be challenged intellectually but will also gain experience and knowledge of how research informs and is informed by practice.

The requirement for an experiential learning placement within the course means that our course provides invaluable practical experience that provides you with the opportunity to apply your knowledge within an applied sporting environment, as well as developing key interpersonal skills while working alongside applied practitioners.

This course is suitable for: (i) students who wish to embark upon a career in the sports sciences domain and who are seeking postgraduate study with the opportunity of supervised experience; (ii) practitioners already working in the field (coaches, trainers, analysts and physiotherapists); (iii) those looking to extend their knowledge before moving into the research and academic sectors.

What will I learn?

Over the year, full-time students will take six taught modules, including: Research Methods; two sports science generic modules designed to examine practitioner skills (The Applied Sports Scientist Core Competencies) and allow you to gain field-based experience of working in an applied setting (Experiential Learning in Applied Sporting Performance); and three pathway-specific modules in Sports Biomechanics, Performance Analysis of Sport, Physiology, or Strength and Conditioning. You will also complete one triple-module Research Project.

How will I be taught?

The course is located on the Parkgate Road Campus across a range of lecture rooms and dedicated sports science and computer laboratories.

You will learn and be taught by means of lectures, seminars, group work and laboratory practical sessions.
The number of contact hours for full-time students is typically six to seven hours per week, plus ad-hoc tutorials. The total study time expected for each module is 200 hours.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment of modules is varied, and comprises a combination of coursework, research reports and presentations. There are no exams.
