Structure

All University and agency-based teaching and learning is structured in accordance with the National Occupational Standards for Social Work and the Code of Professional Practice and the requirements of the Care Council for Wales. Furthermore the teaching responds to UK subject benchmarks for social work.

The programme will be delivered between early September and late July of each year with one week vacation periods at Christmas and Easter.

All subjects on the MA Social Work are mandatory/core – there is no optional element. Your specialisation at the end of year two is one subject but splits into one of two themes: adults or children and families. 

Your time will be divided between formal study and undertaking practical learning placements.

Teaching

Teaching is offered in a range of ways: lectures, seminars, group work, self-directed study, role plays and in practice settings.

You will be expected to attend all timetabled sessions and are also expected to engage in independent study. You will receive supervision to help you complete the dissertation, but you will be expected to manage your own time to undertake significant independent study during this phase.

You are expected to adhere to the Cardiff University policy on Dignity at Work and Study and to the Care Council for Wales Code of Professional Practice.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out by a variety of methods including essays, class tests, project work, case studies, practice portfolios and reflective accounts.

Agency-based practice learning is examined and a ‘pass recommendation’ by the designated practice assessor is required together with a pass in academic work.

Community care law and the law relating to people with mental health problems affect virtually every person in the UK at some time in their lives. Despite the fundamental importance of the law in these fields, its study has been largely neglected by University Master’s programmes.

The LLM Social Care Law addresses this omission by focusing on community care and mental health law, policy and practice in England and Wales.

The programme explores the origins of the law in both fields: the growth of the asylum and the development of the Poor Law and critically analyses the current legal regimes as well as the policy, research and theoretical socio-legal contexts in which these legal regimes exist.

Teaching

Study for an LLM is intensive and challenging and it is important that you take full advantage of the teaching that is provided in order to succeed. Attendance at classes and dissertation supervisions is compulsory and we will expect you to be well prepared.

Our teaching is very flexible and your modules may be delivered through seminars or a combination of lectures and seminars. Other teaching methods include the online use of discussion boards, self-access study packs and formative quizzes and activities.

Modules may be diverse in content to cater for the fact that for some LLM programmes there may be a high proportion of international students or students with previous qualifications other than in law. Modules are typically led by experienced staff actively engaged in research relevant to their subject area.

Assessment

The School of Law and Politics makes use of both formative and summative assessment.

Formative assessments do not count towards your degree but are designed to give you the opportunity to practice for your summative assessments and enable you and your tutors to assess your progress in your modules. Formative assessments will normally involve written coursework or a class test or may comprise individual student presentations.

Summative assessments count towards your degree. Your marks in these assessments count towards your formal progression from Stage One (taught modules) to Stage Two (the Dissertation), and towards the determination of your final award. Summative assessments in Stage One will vary by module but will typically involve written coursework (5,000 word essays), unseen examinations or pre-release examinations. The Dissertation (up to 15,000 words) comprises the Stage Two summative assessment.

The MA Art Practice course is delivered using specialist facilities in our post-graduate studios which are available seven days a week. The MA Art Practice course makes use of lectures, guest speakers, workshops, demonstrations and tutorials, field trips and visits (additional costs will apply for field trips and visits). Contact time will include weekly workshops or seminars, and regular group and individual tutorials. You will also be expected to develop your area of practice independently.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

The course acknowledges the value of experience and partnerships to enable employability. Learning and teaching methods

During the course you will be taught through a combination of lectures and seminars. Leaders from the public sector are regularly invited to deliver guest lectures on topics embedded within the course, so you will benefit from their wealth of experience.

Full-time study involves completing the six taught modules and a dissertation over one full academic year. You will have 12 class contact hours over two days each week – Wednesdays and Thursday between 2-8pm.

For part-time students, the taught component is delivered over two academic years, with a commitment of around six hours on one day each week. You can expect to complete the course over three academic years, but the flexible modular structure allows you to progress at your own pace and combine study with work and/or personal commitments. During the first year of the MSc you will study on Wednesdays between 2-8pm. On your second year you will study on Thursday’s between 2-8pm.

It is a required course for public health trainees in Wales preparing for the examination for membership of the Faculty of Public Health, for whom a supplementary course is available.

The course aims to provide students with the knowledge to:

Assessment

Knowledge and understanding is assessed summatively through tutor assessed essays, project reports, poster presentations, oral class presentations and unseen examinations. The assessment for core modules consists of an unseen examination (contributing 50% of module mark) and a module assignment (contributing 50% of final mark). The specialty modules are assessed by written assignments, oral presentations, and a practical test based on real-life scenarios.  There are no unseen examinations for the speciality modules.

The MPH dissertation stage will be wholly assessed based on the final dissertation. Expectations for the format, submission and marking of the dissertation will follow the current Senate Assessment Regulations, supplemented where appropriate with additional requirements of the Programme/School/College and any specific requirements arising from the nature of the project undertaken.

​The Master of Research (MRes) programme provides high quality and professionally relevant training in research methods and analysis for health, psychology and biomedical science graduates.

The structure of the scheme is based on the ‘SARA’ mnemonic (Scanning, Analysis, Response, Assessment) which is familiar in policing and crime prevention practice as well as in the academy and in applied as well as in basic criminological research.

We aim to develop your research skills by providing training in research methods and to maximise your career prospects by providing transferable skills.

Distinctive features

The course is informed by the priorities of the UK College of Policing, as well as dialogue with members of the School of Social Sciences external advisory group, including representatives from the police, local government and other regulatory agencies with an interest in issues of crime and community safety.

Structure
