Teaching

A wide range of teaching methods will be employed, including but not limited to: lectures, structured tutorials, technology enhanced learning, case-studies, small group discussions, student led seminars and presentations, learning visits, discussions, debates and self-directed learning activities.

As well as formal structured teaching and tutor-guided activities, each module incorporates a period of self-directed study. Within this you will be expected to prepare a presentation based on the taught modular content and/or structured formative assessment exercises.

In addition (depending on the module) you will be expected to undertake: assignment preparation, background reading, literature reviews, development of ideas, critical reflection on the subjects being studied, the completion of personal portfolios demonstrating how you are applying the new knowledge, skills and attitudes in your own practice and your professional setting.

Students completing the MSc stage will conduct an extended project under supervision. The choice of projects available embraces activities that are either research-based or non-research-based and clinical or non-clinical in type. They are undertaken in settings that are appropriate to the nature of the project. You will be allocated an appropriate supervisor for the entire duration of the dissertation phase.

Assessment

Each taught stage module is summatively assessed, including through the completion of a written assignment which can take the form of e.g. an essay, a literature review, a critical evaluation of issues in Gerontology, a Research Protocol etc. All assignments are expected to include critical appraisal of the evidence-based literature.

Formative assessment is conducted through methods such as the oral presentation given in the consolidation block and is peer-assessed by the class. The requirements for formative assessment will vary from module to module, but other formative assessment opportunities include the completion of a portfolio and the completion of structured study exercises based around the modular content.

Entry to the MSc (dissertation stage) is available to a selected number of candidates only, on a part-time basis only, and eligibility is dependent upon successful completion of the Cardiff University Postgraduate Diploma in Therapeutics to an acceptable standard.

Once accepted on to the MSc, candidates complete a formative research methods module and a 20,000 word dissertation. The research dissertation stage lasts for one academic year (part-time).

Assessment

The taught stage in-course assessment is delivered and submitted via Learning Central™. Assessment for each module is carried out by one formative case study and one summative objective assessment (e.g. multiple-choice questions) exercise each fortnight, together with a summative written assignment. The written assignment may take the form of an essay, a piece of portfolio learning or a task such as a practice audit.

The formative case studies encourage candidates to reflect on their own practice, the evidence base, and any national or local guidelines which cover the topic. Responses to the case study are analysed and feedback is provided in a report that follows. This provides candidates with an opportunity to assess their clinical practice and compare it with that of their peers.

The summative objective assessment is marked in-house and feedback and explanations of the correct answers are provided to the students. This element is worth 30% of the marks for each module. The written task is marked by one of the programme markers and then moderated by a member of the course team; this contributes the remaining 70% of the marks for the module.

Career Prospects

The course aims to equip you with a sound understanding of the management of common medical conditions and to develop skills in evidence-based medicine. Graduates would be expected to gain the skills and expertise necessary to become the ‘local therapeutics expert’. 

Many graduates of this course have gone on to hold senior positions in clinical and governmental organisations.

The MSc in Clinical Dermatology is designed specifically for doctors with a special interest in dermatology after gaining at least one year of general medical experience.

The course aims to give a firm grounding in the fundamentals of clinical and scientific dermatology, with priority given to clinical instruction but also an emphasis on the scientific content of dermatology.

It is particularly suitable for overseas medical graduates, but is also appropriate as an additional course to contribute to any dermatology specialist training programme. Most students are self-funded, though some obtain awards from the British Council, respective Governments, Commonwealth Universities Scholarships and employers.

The MSc comprises seven modules delivered using face-to-face teaching at the Welsh Institute of Dermatology at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, UK.

Structure

Stage 1 is the teaching stage. It lasts for eight months, and consists of six 20-credit modules, totalling 120 credits, at Level 7.

Stage 2, the dissertation stage, lasts for a further four months, to a total of one academic year, and will include a dissertation of 60 credits at Level 7, to achieve a combined total of 180 credits at Level 7 to complete the MSc programme.

You may leave the course after successfully completing 60 credits with a Postgraduate Certificate, or after successfully completing 120 credits with a Postgraduate Diploma. 

The dissertation is based on a literature-review and normally not more than 20,000 words supported by such other material as may be considered appropriate to the subject and should include the results of your period of project work. The dissertation is worth 60 credits and is weighted 50% for the purpose of calculating your final mark.

A practical skills module runs throughout the duration of Stage 1 of the course. This is supported by significant patient interaction. You will be allocated to the Dermatology Day Treatment Unit for a 1 – 2 week period for practical clinical experience. You will be required to attend regular general outpatient dermatology clinics in Cardiff and the surrounding area. There are also day visits to other dermatology centres in Wales.

The PgDip/ MSc in Medical Education is committed to promoting excellence in learning and teaching for health professionals. Having established the first Masters in Medical Education in the UK, we continue to lead, providing innovative programmes for all medical, dental and health professionals who aim to professionalise the role of the clinician as teacher.

It recognises the diverse, complex and challenging contexts of both those new to educator roles and responsibilities and those with considerable years of experience. The overall aim of the course is to develop a community of educators committed to promote improvements in both ‘what’ and ‘how’ we teach future healthcare professionals.

The course is highly practical and aims to model best practice in learning and teaching and draws upon a wide range of innovative approaches to learner support and development. The course is organised into a series of modules that usually last two days each followed by a period of independent study. The first session of each two-day unit is a synthesis of the previous module and the independent study period. This three stage process develops and clarifies understanding of the module topic, gives the opportunity and time to apply new concepts and skills, and concludes by allowing reflection on and sharing of experiences and insights with colleagues. The culmination of the programme is a practical teaching project, a student-led symposium on a contemporary issue in medical education.

A comprehensive menu of face-to-face modules will enable you to contribute to critical dialogues that promote deeper insights into educational theory and principles applied to clinical practice.

The MSc component of the course, follows the successful completion of the PgDip modules. This component of the course will allow you to develop skills in designing and conducting an educational project, culminating in the submission of a dissertation. Many of the projects provide the basis for practical innovations in the workplace and can also extend engagement with and contribution to the wider medical education community.

The course is accredited by the Higher Education Academy, conferring Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. The course is also aligned to the Academy of Medical Educators professional standards enabling you to apply for recognition of the Academy of Medical Educators.

The full-time Postgraduate Diploma course involves studying all the modules in one academic year (September-June).

The part-time Postgraduate Diploma course usually involves attending two-day sessions in Cardiff every six weeks during the academic year (September to June). You will therefore spend about 23 days in Cardiff, 11 days during the first year and 12 days in the second year.

You may exit with a Cardiff University Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education having successfully achieved the required standard, although most students continue on to the Postgraduate Diploma or MSc award.

The full-time MSc course involves studying all the modules in one academic year (September-June) and acceptance of an approved dissertation (July-September). Successful completion of the modules will allow you to progress to the MSc component and undertake an educational project culminating in the submission of a dissertation.

The part time MSc course involves attending a series of Postgraduate Diploma modules and completion of a dissertation.  Modules usually involve attending two-day sessions in Cardiff every six weeks during the two academic years (September to June).  You will therefore spend about 23 days in Cardiff, 11 days during the first academic year and 12 days in the second academic year.  Once you have successfully completed the modules you will undertake an educational project culminating in the submission within 12 months of a dissertation.

Teaching

Teaching on the modules mainly takes place in small groups, which are facilitated by the core teaching team. There is the opportunity for discussions, debates, instructor presentations, tutorials, case studies, role play and peer interactions designed to enhance learning in addition to guided and independent study. Participation, collaboration and practical application are key tenets of the course, and you will be encouraged to try out new approaches to learning and teaching throughout the programme. Activities may include video-recording a teaching session for review, implementing and appraising untried assessment techniques, developing and coding a questionnaire; designing and producing instructional media for a teaching session.

The Master’s component will require the completion of a small scale empirical or literature-based study. You will be allocated a supervisor to support your study following successful completion of the modules.

Assessment

You will be assessed in a variety of ways both to inform learning (formative) and to assess learning (summative).

Methods include assignments, practical projects and a reflective journal and for the Master’s component a dissertation. All assignment tasks are linked to your educational practise. For example typical assignments may relate to designing and producing some instructional media for a specific teaching need you identify, critically reviewing an assessment method you use or designing a proposal for an educational project in your clinical teaching context.

Satisfactory standard in the modules is required for progress on to the MSc. The MSc component will require the completion of a small scale empirical or literature based study, culminating in the submission of a dissertation.

This three-year full-time course aims to equip you with the skills needed to perform as a competent specialist in orthodontics, with focus on the clinical, theoretical and research areas required for provision of adequate patient care.

Open to home, EU and overseas students, successful completion of the course will result in the award of a Master’s degree in Orthodontics. The course is also recognised for training purposes by the Royal Colleges for the Membership in Orthodontics of both Edinburgh and the Bicollegiate examination.

Didactic, self-directed and problem-based modular teaching extends throughout the three-year programme. The course provides clinical training within the teaching hospital and in district units in Swansea, Newport, and North Glamorgan. The first two years of the course consist of structured research.

Structure

This is a full-time, three-year course, with the final examination in the spring of year three. The course consists of three main elements:

1. A taught course covering evidence-based topics that are consistent with the recommendations of the World Federation of Orthodontists, European and National guidelines

2. A clinical practical element of supervised management of selected problems of dento-facial abnormality

3. A research project and preparation of a dissertation.

Throughout the programme, you will spend five clinical (half day) sessions per week providing direct patient care and one session per week attending new patient and joint clinics. One (half day) session per week is dedicated to academic teaching in the autumn and spring terms, and three (half day) sessions are timetabled for research and personal study in the autumn and spring terms. An additional session is available for research during the summer term resulting in there being approximately 560 hours available.

Radiography in the School of Healthcare Sciences is accredited by the Society and College of Radiographers, and the skills you can obtain are transferable to all NHS Trusts and are recognised overseas.

This course aims to expand your knowledge in areas such as image appreciation, radiographic reporting and mammography and many other practices associated with radiography.

It also aims to equip you to meet the ever-changing needs of this fast-developing sector, and a high volume of course content will be delivered by experienced radiologists and clinical specialists. You will also have ample opportunity to work in clinical settings with plenty of hands-on experience.

Structure

You will complete modules totalling 120 M-level credits to be eligible for an exit award of a Postgraduate Diploma. All students complete a compulsory research module (30 credits), which is also available by distance learning.

The modules are those considered to be of relevance to the practising radiographer and other allied health professionals engaged with imaging. Theoretical and clinical practice elements combine in order to optimise service delivery, enhance clinical skills and improve the overall management of the patient.

Full-time students undertake all four taught modules during one academic year, while part-time students undertake the taught modules over two years. If you successfully complete sufficient modules, you are able to proceed to the dissertation stage. If successful you will be eligible for the award of a Master of Science degree.

We will also look in more detail at the modelling of biological macromolecules and drug targets. We will then follow the process of drug development through from laboratory to clinic.

Teaching

The methods of teaching we employ will vary from module to module, as appropriate depending on the subject matter and the method of assessment. We teach using a mixture of lectures, workshops, case studies, computer-aided sessions, practicals and tutorials.

Your research project will be carried out in one of our laboratories under supervision of an academic member of staff with interests in a similar field. You may have the opportunity to complete your project during a placement in industry or with one of our academic partner institutions overseas, depending on availability.

Modules relating to computing frequently take place in our computer rooms, while practical work will be undertaken in our laboratories. We will also invite industry experts for seminars with our students within one of the core modules. Students will also benefit of the weekly seminars organized by the School of Chemistry, where leading experts in various scientific fields are invited to present their work.

Support

All of our students are allocated a personal tutor when they enrol on the course. A personal tutor is there to support you during your studies, and can advise you on academic and personal matters that may be affecting you. You should have regular meetings with your personal tutor to ensure that you are fully supported.

You will have access to the Science Library, which holds our collection of chemistry resources, as well as to the other Cardiff University Libraries.

Feedback:

We will provide regular feedback on your workload, written and oral depending on the coursework or assessment you have undertaken. You will usually receive your feedback from the module leader. If you have questions regarding your feedback, module leaders are happy to give advice and guidance on your progress. We aim to provide you with feedback within two weeks of you submitting an assessment.

Assessment

Taught modules are assessed in a variety of different ways depending on the module content and learning outcomes (found in the module descriptions). We use coursework, assessed workshops and presentations or a combination of these to assess your progress on the course.

Your research project at the end of the course will be assessed through a dissertation, a presentation, and an oral exam.

Career prospects

After completing this course there are usually two career streams open to graduates, research or industry. Within these two fields there are a variety of career options. For example, many of our graduates choose to follow up their MSc and decide to complete a PhD research degree with us. Employment opportunities for successful graduates include the expanding worldwide pharmaceutical industry, where many choose to specialise in the research and development of new drugs. Research-related jobs usually require a PhD, for which this programme provides an ideal preparation.
