Cape Town is South Africa’s second largest city, located – as its name suggests – at the tip of the country’s Western Cape. There are three public universities in Cape Town and a number of other higher education institutions are located nearby. In total there are around 80,000 students studying at universities in the city.

What’s it like to study a Masters in Cape Town?

Originating as a colonial trading port and harbour, Cape Town has become one of South Africa’s most famous cities, with large numbers of tourists drawn by its attractive climate, beautiful geography and striking flora and fauna.

Cape Town has much to offer these students, with famous nearby landmarks including Table Mountain and the surrounding national park as well as the city’s own beautiful natural harbour.

Ocean sports are also popular in the region, with the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of some of history’s most famous mariners (well, in a manner of speaking) and sail around the Cape of Good Hope itself.

Universities in Cape Town

The city’s oldest university is the University of Cape Town, founded in 1829. It is second oldest university in Africa and is usually the highest-ranking African university in global ranking tables, placing within the world top 150. Other universities in Cape Town include the University of the Western Cape and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.

Located around 50km from Cape Town itself is another of South Africa’s premier higher education institutions, Stellenbosch University. It is usually ranked within the country’s top three universities and offers an internationally renowned MBA programme.

Cape Town is a significant regional economic hub and is sometimes referred to as the start-up capital of Africa. The city has a strong tech sector, as well as significant film, manufacturing and financial services sectors. Companies with offices in Cape Town include Airbus, IBM, GlaxoSmithKline and Amazon.
