This leading-edge graduate program is the first of its kind in Canada’s tourism and hospitality education system. It responds to the worldwide demand for tourism and hospitality leaders to build and sustain a competitive advantage in the global tourism market. Timely and relevant program content has been designed in collaboration with industry experts, students, faculty and education partners. Students gain skills in destination development, leadership, sustainability and global tourism.

Who it’s for

Managers, owners and executives in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors who want to increase their competency as managers in the tourism and hospitality industry. Typically, students have a minimum of five years experience in the industry.

Students requiring English language upgrading can qualify for the MA in Tourism Management program through our Pre-Master’s Program (PMP).

The MA in Tourism Management is designed to meet the advanced learning needs of professionals in the broad, diverse tourism industry. The employment focus is on travel generators - that is, on the middle managers and senior leaders who initiate, design, develop product, and market destinations, events and conferences, and cultural and natural attractions.

There is market demand for managers and executives with advanced capabilities in corporate leadership, policy, planning, marketing, strategic thinking, and sustainability. Career opportunities include management and executive positions in resorts, municipal, provincial and federal governments and operating agencies, destination management and marketing organizations, events and conference management companies, and inbound tourism companies.

Additional opportunities exist for tourism educators in public and private post-secondary institutions, where a Masters degree is usually an occupational requirement. Combining prior tourism industry experience with the advanced level learning offered in the Masters program can significantly enhance assessment of an individual’s potential, develop career opportunities, and build networks of valuable industry contacts.

Applicants who do not have the formal academic education to qualify for admission may be assessed on the basis of both their formal education and their informal learning, in accordance with the Flexible Admission Policy.

Outcomes

Graduates of the MA in Tourism Management have a broad range of applied technical, interpersonal, analytical, and communication skills in tourism leadership. The four competencies, applied to the areas of tourism leadership, sustainable tourism, destination development, international hotel and resort management and applied research include communications, knowledge, leadership and teamwork, critical thinking and global awareness.

Upon completing the program, students have:
-Critically engaged with current theory, practice and process
-Examined case studies, research articles, report and industry information in the areas of tourism leadership, sustainable tourism, destination development and international hotel and resort management;
-Selected, analyzed and explored leadership concepts and skills and applied them to opportunities and challenges faced by leaders at individual, organizational, community and industry levels
-Explored the characteristics of successful, sustainable destinations with innovative product, well-defined markets, successful partnerships, and a positive contribution to the tourism and hospitality industry

Food tourism is an increasingly popular segment of the tourism industry as culinary experiences drive and are at the core of local, regional and international travel. The School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts’ Food Tourism program will provide learners with the skills required to develop successful food tourism enterprises and gain employment in existing food and culinary tourism agencies and companies while advocating for social justice, equity and access in communities worldwide. Students will gain small business expertise while exploring their creativity and innovativeness which can be applied within both an entrepreneurial or intrapreneurial setting.

This graduate certificate is targeted at working professionals in and around food, culinary, tourism and events industries. Students will learn about the exciting links between experience, gastronomy, wine, culture, food traditions and communities.

Graduates will be prepared to pursue employment in tourism agencies, local and international tourism attractions, culinary establishments, government agencies, historical tourism sites, food writing and culinary experiential travel groups.

The entrepreneurial skills taught in the program will also permit graduates to pursue self-employment and/or consultancy work establishing local food movements such as farmers markets, community food hubs and destinations attracting food tourism.
