The MBA in Executive Management at Royal Roads University is designed for working professionals, by working professionals. Read more
The MBA in Executive Management at Royal Roads University is designed for working professionals, by working professionals. We’ve used our experience in the industry to create a program that gives you the solid foundation required of today’s business leaders, as well as the opportunity to put your learning to work through hands-on practice. No matter what your career aspirations are, you’ll be able to use the tools and techniques found in your program to move your organization forward.

Who It's For

Experienced managers and business leaders who are looking for versatility and customization of their MBA experience. The program builds on each student’s current knowledge and experience to develop the strategic skills business growth depends upon, and provides a broad understanding of critical issues in management leadership. It also allows students to select electives in sustainability, innovation or coaching for an individualized MBA experience that aligns with their career goals.

The Royal Roads University Learning Model

At Royal Roads University, we use a cohort learning model for many of our programs, including the MBA. Our unique learning model requires you to work with your team, sharing personal experiences and diverse perspectives to develop unique solutions to projects and challenges. Working together ensures that everyone contributes to and benefits from the program, and the connections you create through our cohort environment form a powerful network of support you can turn to during your program and after graduation.

An Investment in Education

The MBA program at Royal Roads University is challenging and requires compromises between you and your family, friends, and employers. Your cohort depends on you to contribute and participate in group projects and assignments, and you’ll need to allocate enough time to manage your assigned readings and individual tasks. It’s important to discuss these requirements with the important people in your life, so you can plan out mutually acceptable arrangements before you start your program. The program is challenging, but the experience is invaluable.

Team-Based Learning

Your program will include students from across Canada as well as internationally; typically about 40 years old with 15 or more years of professional experience. One of the biggest benefits of this mixture of personal and professional experience is the opportunities created by developing your professional network. You can expand your network around the globe, finding access to resources outside of what your competition can discover. And that’s a great way to build your business and professional exposure.

Organizational Management Project

The Organizational Management Project (OMP) is the major integrative learning activity of the MBA Program, and offers a rich learning opportunity through the application of theory to a real-world situation. By applying theory to a real world-situation, completion of the OMP enhances the skills of the learner and provides a valuable contribution to the client or host organization.

More specifically, in the OMP, learners will examine a management problem, conduct academic and best case research, analyze options, and provide recommendations and a high-level implementation plan in a final report for the client or host organization. The management problem to be researched and analyzed is identified in collaboration with an organization. MBA learners may choose to conduct their OMP with an external organization, or it can be conducted within a learner’s own workplace provided the project is not related to the learner’s own position and does not involve his/her direct reports. The MBA Program Office will also work with learners to identify potential projects with corporate or not-for-profit organizations that have indicated their interest in being involved with our program in this capacity.

This graduate certificate program is designed for people who want to enhance their leadership by aligning their decisions and actions with consciously chosen values through tumultuous times and complex challenges. It is also for those who want to be more confident of the lasting value of their efforts to improve organizations. The program highlights deeper patterns that are influential and typically invisible in everyday organizational life, and that are not usually in our attention as leaders. Further, the program is oriented not only to acquiring new knowledge and ‘tools’ but also the development of discernment and wisdom in leadership.

Who it's for

This six-month graduate certificate is designed for experienced and emerging leaders who have been in organizational leadership roles long enough to understand the challenges we’re facing in this ever-changing and diverse world. It is for leaders who want to see their highest values in action and make a difference in their communities, organizations and beyond.

Outcomes

This graduate certificate will enable students to:
-Create a solid foundation for leadership credibility.
-Develop the practice of wisdom in leadership.
-Transform conflict and challenges into learning and opportunity.
-Foster adaptability to change and resilience to setbacks.
-Develop sound practices for sustainable collaboration.
-Expand connections and networks.
-Understand sustainable organizational culture change

This is a program that integrates theory and practice and which provides advanced leadership skills for developing highly effective teams through a focus on purpose, integrity, culture, strategy, and the common good. It will be of special interest to those wanting to enhance their own leadership competence, organizational effectiveness and resilience, recruitment and retention of talent, reputation, and long-term productivity.

In addition to its value as a nine-credit graduate certificate, graduates of this certificate may be eligible for credit towards electives in other Royal Roads programs as follows: nine credits towards the MA in Leadership, nine credits towards the MA in Interdisciplinary Studies and six credits towards the MBA.

Delivery Model

The Graduate Certificate in Values-Based Leadership (GCVBL) is offered in a blended format which means that the program combines on-campus residencies with distance learning. This allows working professionals to benefit from the synergy of on-site learning and direct interaction with peers and faculty members, while being able to meet workplace demands and other commitments. The result is accessible, high quality learning with minimal professional disruption.

The first blended segment includes VBLD510 and VBLD512, two courses with three credits each which are taken concurrently. The second blended segment consists of a third three-credit course with an independent application project and concludes with a four-day, face-to-face on-campus residency.

Program Timelines, Methods and Resources - Students build a supportive learning community with their peers and facilitators by engaging in online team and group learning activities for the first five weeks. They also complete important readings during this time. The sixth week includes the on-campus residency, followed by online learning in teams for another three weeks. The second blended segment begins with nine weeks of online course work, a project, and a four-day wrap-up on-campus residency with an additional day given for project revisions and assessment. A variety of learning resources and methods are used including textbooks, assessment instruments, articles, case studies, interactive Internet learning, videotapes, and ‘chat’ bulletin boards for correspondence with colleagues and faculty in the program.

Workload - The first distance segment integrates two courses and represents approximately 15-20 hours per week, while the second distance segment should require 12-15 hours on average per week. Students can expect to work hard during the on-campus residency periods. The normal classroom schedule is from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with several evening sessions. Homework, readings, and team meetings are normally done outside of these hours. In addition to the educational activities, there may be some planned recreational events. Attendance at the on-campus residencies are mandatory; however students are not required to live on-campus.

OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT

The operations management specialization includes a focus on project management, quality management, logistics and supply chain management. Courses will cover many of the topics required for the Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) and the Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) professional designations from APICS -The Association for Operations Management (formerly the American Production and Inventory Control Society).
