Program Overview

The Special Education program at UBC concerns the education of students with exceptionalities, such as students with visual impairments, developmental disabilities, emotional or behavioural disorders, learning disabilities, gifts and talents, and those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Faculty are committed to promoting practices that facilitate inclusion, empowerment, and self-determination of individuals with disabilities and other special needs in home, school, and community settings.

UBC does not offer an undergraduate degree in special education.

The undergraduate courses in special education are open to students enrolled in the regular B.Ed. program or in one of the following post-B.Ed. special education programs: (1) Master of Education (M.Ed), (2) Master of Arts (M.A.), and (3) Diploma in Special Education. Most undergraduate courses are also available to Unclassified students.

The Brock University Master of Education International Student Program (MEd ISP) curriculum is designed to provide international students an opportunity to enhance their academic background and gain a greater understanding of Canadian issues and challenges in achievement of academic inquiry skills in educational research. The ten half-credit courses of the MEd ISP are organized into an intensive, four-term program (14 months). The MEd (ISP) is situated in the Administration and Leadership in Education field of specialization and is offered as a cohort program for full-time students only. Students begin the program in the summer term (July 2 start date) and follow a prescribed program of study. All students in this program are registered in the Course Pathway. With permission from the ISP Steering Committee and the Graduate Program Director/Department Chair, a limited number of students may transfer into the Research Pathway – MRP option after they have successfully completed the fall term. Admissions Information

Successful completion of an Honours Bachelor's degree, or equivalent, in any discipline with an overall Grade Point Average Brock equivalent of 75%. Professional work experience is a valuable asset but not necessary. Applicants who have not completed three or more years of post-secondary work at a Canadian institution, or at an institution where English was the primary language of instruction, will be required to provide proof of English language proficiency through a TOEFL iBT score of 80, or an IELTS score of 6.5. MEd ISP applications must be received by February 15th of each year in order to be considered for admission. Intake into the MEd ISP is early July of each calendar year. Fees

A non-refundable application fee of $130.00 in Canadian funds must be submitted for the MEd ISP program. Applications will not be processed without the application fee. For the current MEd ISP tuition, please visit Brock Financial and Administrative Services website. This fee includes four terms of study (16 months) and required textbooks. The tuition fee must be paid prior to commencement of the MEd ISP (payment plan is available). Details of payment will be provided upon admission to the program. Living expenses, transportation, ancillary fees and medical insurance premium are the responsibility of the student.
