The Master of Medical Biotechnology is a professional program offered by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and provides students with a solid foundation of the theoretical concepts and practical industrially-applicable laboratory technique experiences used in medical biotechnology industries. In addition, students will also receive training in business plan development and product commercialization.

The skills and knowledge taught in this program will allow you to develop a successful career in biotech entrepreneurship, medical and pharmaceutical materials characterization, medical diagnostics or biotechnology product development/monitoring. In addition, the Master of Medical Biotechnology program can be a route for career advancement if you are currently employed in biotechnology and/or related medical and pharmaceutical industries.

Course Offerings

You will study and live in Canada for approximately 16 consecutive months while enrolled in 10 prescribed courses. The courses will have multi-disciplinary relevance and provide the practical knowledge required to excel in the complex environment of Medical Biotechnology.

Prior to the start of the academic program, you may be required to attend six weeks (July-August 2015) of intensive English language training (English and Academic Preparation Program). This program is designed to develop your English language skills in an academic environment and learn more about Canadian culture. Our research-intensive MSc program offers students the opportunity to conduct outstanding research projects and receive training in a broad range of fields within the pharmaceutical sciences. We provide you with exceptional mentors and supervisors, a rigorous learning environment, and access to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities to conduct your research.

We accept students from a wide range of backgrounds. Students come to us with degrees in pharmaceutical sciences, medicine, biotechnology, the basic and biomedical sciences (e.g., chemistry, biology, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics, pharmacology), engineering (e.g., biomedical, chemical), economics and epidemiology. More than 50% of our graduate students come to us from other parts of the world, including the US and countries in Asia, Africa and Europe. We offer orientation events to help new students integrate into life here in Vancouver, as well as at UBC and within the Faculty itself. Our Pharmaceutical Sciences Graduate Student Society (PharGS) offers another fantastic way to feel at home at UBC.

The Master of Biomedical Technology (MBT) program exposes students to a broad range of recent concepts and cutting-edge technologies, providing them with both the skills, knowledge, and experience that they need for successful careers in the Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology industries. In today's workplace where working in teams across disciplines is the key for success and employment opportunities, the multi-disciplinary approach embodied within the training program will prepare all students for the flexibility and versatility they will need for future success in business, academia, or government.

The MBT program consists of a comprehensive course package, which ensures the acquisition of a wide range of practical competencies, extensive knowledge of concepts in a variety of biomedical disciplines. MBT graduates are able to access and manipulate the rapidly expanding information on genes, proteins and their structure and functions. Students gain experience in the business development processes of biotechnology companies understanding the market and financial aspects of current companies, as well as the importance of the development of intellectual property.

Our Mission

To provide education and practical experience in basic science disciplines related to biotechnology, and communication and business skills required for successful careers in biotechnology.

MBT Course-Based Degree

The MBT is a one year program that combines courses in basic biomedical sciences with training in business aspects such as scientific, market, patent & financial analysis.

All students are considered full-time.

MBT/MBA Joint Degree Program

The MBT program offers a joint degree with the Haskayne School of Business' MBA program. Students interested in this option would need to apply to both the MBT and MBA programs and gain admission into both to be eligible.

There is no requirement for which year you take MBT courses, and which year you take MBA courses, but you would start with one program's requirements to start, and upon completion of those, you would move on to the other program's requirements.

Students who take the joint MBT/MBA program have a reduction in their MBA course load (2 courses). There is no reduction in course load for the MBT portion.

Biomedical imaging (CT, MRI, MRS, ultrasound, SPECT, PET-CT, PET-MRI, optical, photoacoustic) is a vigorous research area at the cellular, small-animal, pre-clinical, and clinical scale in our department. Our research program therefore gives students a chance to work with state-of-the-art equipment, often combining computational and experimental techniques.

The work of all our students, considered collectively, represents substantial accomplishments in a wide spectrum of physical, biological, and clinical science.
