The M.H.A. program is offered by SPPH, Faculty of Medicine, in collaboration with the Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration.

The M.H.A. curriculum provides the educational and professional foundations for leadership in the health services field. It emphasizes analytical thinking and aims to provide graduates who are skilled professionals with in-depth applied administrative research tools. Graduates are expected to be capable of identifying and solving complex organizational and assessment problems in the health services sector.

What makes the program unique?

The M.H.A. has a professional executive focus and is taught in modular (1.5 credit) format: Friday afternoon through to Sunday afternoon, approximately one weekend per month. The full program takes two calendar years to complete while also allowing students to work full-time while completing their degree. Co-delivered by instructors from the Faculty of Medicine and the Sauder School of Business, students complete courses in health systems, policies and management to prepare them for a broad range of issues facing today's health care world. The program follows a cohort-based schedule and all 24 courses are required.

The M.H.A. program is delivered at UBC Robson Square located right in the heart of Vancouver’s business community. Our facilities are dedicated to creating the perfect learning environment and our classrooms are customized for interactive approaches with technical configurations to suit lectures and group discussions. Students in the MHA also receive fully-catered meals throughout their weekend classes, along with all textbooks and course materials, included in the program’s tuition.

General Information

The M.P.H. Program is a two-year non-thesis program. It will normally be completed in three academic terms and one term devoted to a practicum. The M.P.H. program is available in two formats:

Traditional classroom-based curriculum: on-campus classes scheduled on a Monday to Friday timetable.
Distributed learning format: each course consists of three full days, one day per month. An additional 15 hours of curriculum is online for each course. Full day classes will be scheduled Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. Courses will be scheduled so that classes for four separate courses can take place over three extended weekends (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday) in a term.
The MPH can be combined with the Diploma in Dental Public Health.

The Master of Health Ethics degree program will help students develop the skills needed to identify and analyze ethical issues in health care and in the life sciences, and to propose solutions to these issues as they arise in the clinical, research, and policy contexts. Students will gain a basic knowledge of the functioning of the health system and will have the opportunity to design and carry out a research project.

The MHE program is designed to be completed in four semesters of full time study, and consists of three options: 1) thesis, 2) non-thesis, capstone project, and 3) non-thesis research papers.

The MSc (Kinesiology) program commenced in 2005. In its short history, 10 master’s students have continued on to doctoral programs. Graduate students have authored or co-authored approximately 20 peer-reviewed articles in that period. The laboratories are well equipped with 3 EMG acquisition systems, 2 metabolic carts, hypoxic air generator, force platform, muscle stimulation unit, immersion tank, accelerometers, lumbar motion monitor, and a variety of strain gauges among other equipment.

Memorial conferred its first degree in Master of Physical Education (MPE) in 1975. Beginning September 2008, the MPE program may be completed entirely online via distance education. The MPE program provides professional training to leaders in the fields of physical education, sport, and recreation. While some students concentrate in the areas of administration, curriculum, and supervision in physical education, others opt for studies in related professional areas. These areas include parks and recreation, sport and leisure administration and management, and sport science.

Students completing their MPE can focus on administration, curriculum, or supervision, while those completing their MSc can focus on exercise and work physiology, biomechanics/ergonomics, sport psychology, and socio-cultural studies of physical activity and health. Seven new courses have been introduced that reflect the present issues in the physical education curriculum. Graduates have moved on to a variety of professions and include university professors, lawyers, engineers, administrators, and teachers. Many graduate students have also gone on to pursue doctoral studies in a number of exciting fields. Graduate programs are offered in both full-time and part-time formats, with a number of different options available to students.

The MSc (Kin) program involves courses and a thesis, and can be completed in two years of full-time study.

The MPH program has two streams: Nutrition/Dietetics and Population/Public Health. The Nutrition/Dietetics stream involves courses, a research project, and an internship, and can be completed in two years of full-time study. The Applied Health Services Research (MAHSR) program is a collaborative ventrue between UNB, the Atlantic Regional Training Centre (ARTC) and three other Atlantic Canadian Universities. This unique program is designed for those with or without a healthcare background. Instructors hold all classes online and provide students with an interdisciplinary approach to healthcare research. Students obtain a hands-on experience through a residency placement.

Students in the MAHSR program gain the necessary skills to tackle key issues in health service policy, administration and delivery. Humber’s Wellness Coaching graduate certificate program prepares you to work in the field of health and wellness coaching. The program is uniquely designed with the working student in mind. Your courses are scheduled over two 12-week semesters and offer a blend of on-line modules and face-to-face classes that take place on evenings and weekends. You will gain knowledge and skills in promoting health and wellness and preventing or managing disease. You will also learn to establish effective coaching relationships; support sustainable behaviour change through practices such as motivational interviewing and mindfulness; manage health and wellness programs; and improve quality of life for people with chronic conditions. You will empower individuals and groups to self-advocate, as they set and achieve healthy behaviour change goals in areas such as stress management, healthy eating, active lifestyle, sleep habits and smoking cessation. You will engage with clients in experiential learning opportunities within Humber’s innovative Centre for Healthy Living and also in field placements within a variety of organizational settings.

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

• Develop wellness programs for individuals, families, communities, workplaces and populations based on critical appraisal of health and wellness information from relevant sources.

Work Placement

A core aspect of the program is a six-week field placement in which students secure a sponsor/mentor, determine a project, implement and evaluate the project, and practise and reflect on coaching relationships and processes. The site of the placement may be within a current employment setting or another appropriate worksite. Students are exposed to inter-professional learning, planning and leadership, coaching practice, collegiality and collaboration. Online interactions and reflections occur with the instructor and class throughout the placement experience.

Your Career

Upon graduation, students are prepared to add wellness coaching to their present work role or to begin working as a health and wellness coaching professional. Employment opportunities exist in outpatient settings such as fitness centres, workplace settings, bariatric/weight loss centres, cardiac rehab programs, outpatient cancer support programs, outpatient chronic disease management programs, mental health support programs, community health centres, and as members of family health-care teams.

The proportion of Seniors is accelerating rapidly, and Seniors are expected to account for nearly one-quarter of British Columbia’s population by 2036. Currently nearly 15 per cent of the population older than 85 resides in a public or private care facility. While many services are provided in the public sector there is an increasing number and range of services for Seniors in the private and non-profit sectors as well. These demographic trends highlight the pressing need for health professionals with sector-relevant and cross-disciplinary technical skills who can create the future of Seniors care in community and institutional contexts.

The Master of Health Leadership and Policy (MHLP) in Seniors Care is an intensive one-year degree program that equips you with the skills needed to improve patient outcomes and help create the future of Seniors health care. The project-based curriculum follows the industry value chain, maintaining a strong focus on organizational models of practice that promote ethical, equitable and socially sustainable policies and practices in Seniors care. While 60 per cent of your classes will focus on your technical specialization, the remaining 40 per cent are leadership development courses that will enhance your business, communication and people skills. Delivery of the management and leadership courses are in partnership with UBC's Sauder School of Business.

The MHLP in Seniors Care is a unique graduate program that empowers you to develop the sector-relevant cross-disciplinary technical skills that are acutely needed in this field. No other Canadian institution currently offers sector-focused (rather than research-oriented) training at the graduate level. It has been developed in close collaboration with public and private sector partners, who told us they are challenged to find people with the cross-functional technical and leadership skills needed to develop innovative solutions, manage collaborative teams and lead projects.

To complement your academic studies, professional development workshops, delivered by industry leaders, are offered throughout the year-long program. These extra-curricular sessions cover a range of topics such as:
