The Department of Geoscience provides excellent opportunities for research in most areas of geology, geophysics, and hydrology. The varied research interests of the faculty provide opportunities for a wide range of graduate research topics as well as collaborative projects with faculty who have different specialties.

The MSc thesis based program allows a maximum of 4 years to completion but it is encouraged that students finish in 2 years.

Master of Science (M.Sc.) Course-based

Degree requirements:
-Nine half course equivalents including GLGY or GOPH 701
-GLGY OR GOPH 701 project course, submitted after all other course requirements are fulfilled
-Minimum GPA: 3.0 (base used: 4.0 point)
-Residence requirement: Yes
-Foreign language(s): No
-Computer language: No
-Comprehensive exam: No

Geoscience offers non-thesis Master's degrees in both Geology and Geophysics. The course-based M.Sc. program provides B.Sc. graduates with advanced academic training. If the student has an employer, the course-based M.Sc. program can be done in collaboration with an industrial partner and industrial capstone project. The program is suitable for both full-time and part-time mature students who may already be in the workforce with relevant work-experience, but wish to obtain an advanced degree without taking a leave of absence. The department provides no funding for course-based M.Sc. students and for admission a faculty member must agree to supervise the student's program.

Our recent graduates have gone on to work mainly in the mineral exploration and petroleum sectors, geosciences, geophysics, and environmental geoscience consulting, government research in natural resources, academe. We generally have about 30-40 students that work with research-active faculty with strong links with provincial (NB-DNR) and federal (GSC) geological surveys.

One of our key features is that we offer field-based student research, which is conducted throughout Canada. Students have access to cutting edge labs and facilities; such as, the Laser Ablation inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry, geochemical and spectroscopic analytical facilities, geophysical equipment and software, electron and light microscopy, experimental petrology, sample preparation and thin section preparation (UNB Earth Sciences maintains one of the best thin section preparation facilities in Canada).

Our students work in a collegial environment and have a well-organized graduate student society (AGES). The Planetary and Space Science Centre (PASSC) have some graduate students that are directly studying lunar soil and Martian meteorites affected by the impact of asteroids and comets.

The Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering (GGE) graduate program at UNB combines the study of geodesy with geomatics, giving students a well-rounded understanding of the field. We offer an interdisciplinary, practical approach that relates these subjects to other disciplines such as geology, physics, civil engineering, oceanography, and law.

Our top-rated, internationally-known department provides students access to associated research centres and the latest geodetic instruments. More than 500 students around the globe have obtained postgraduate degrees from GGE, going on to become faculty members, researchers, and professionals in well-recognized universities research institutes, industries and companies worldwide. Our graduates’ expertise proves invaluable in environmental monitoring, land and marine resource management, and real estate transactions.

We normally have about 60 graduate students in the program from all over the world. Students have access to well-equipped labs with modern hardware, software, and a wide-variety of geodetic instruments. Our associated research centres include the Ocean Mapping Group, Canadian Centre for Geodetic Engineering, Geodetic Research Laboratory, and the Geographical Engineering Group.
