Humber’s Fundraising Management graduate certificate program prepares you for that career and is the only full-time, in-class program of its kind in Ontario. At the end of one exciting year of practical learning, you emerge prepared to make an immediate, dynamic, positive contribution to our world.

You will study with professors that are among Toronto’s most accomplished, award-winning, non-profit leaders. They will inspire, share insights from years of fundraising campaign experience and challenge you to do your best.

Your dynamic course of study is designed to give you practical, hands-on experience in all of the methods that nonprofit organizations use to create and maintain relationships with their communities of support. You will learn to manage diverse groups of donors, volunteers and staff, all toward a goal of enabling non-profit organizations to achieve their missions.

All courses feature regular appearances by industry leaders. As well, you will be working directly with charities on a number of class assignments, and you will attend two professional conferences as part of your curriculum.

Course detail

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

• Demonstrate personal competencies in relationship to ethics, legal issues, and leadership in fundraising.
• Conceptualize and plan fundraising project and programs (e.g., major gifts, planned giving, annual giving, corporate giving and capital campaigns).
• Prepare proposals and administer grants.
• Develop and implement marketing and direct marketing strategies and activities.
• Conduct the research and analysis associated with the management of lists, promotions and donors.
• Evaluate the environmental forces that impact Canadian business and non-profit and charitable organizations, and explain the organization and roles of the various departments found within fundraising organizations.
• Apply writing skills for fundraising proposals, annual reports, promotion, marketing, public relations, direct mail and event marketing.
• Manage human resource and volunteer resources including planning, recruiting, selecting, orienting, training, supervising, evaluating volunteers.
• Manage fundraising projects including the development of implementation plans, the monitoring and evaluation of programs and projects.
• Demonstrate personal relationship building and presentation skills for fundraising including presenting fundraising programs as well as approaching prospects and closing pledges.
• Manage computer databases in order to input, compile, analyze and report data and isolate new markets and fundraising opportunities.
• Analyze fundraising issues and events, implement a problem-solving process and present solutions.
• Contact fundraising employers and identify work opportunities in the field.

Work Placement

The work placement, which concludes your course of study, takes place in the summer during the program’s final eight weeks. Humber’s Financial Planning graduate certificate program provides a clear pathway to careers in the lucrative financial services industry.

Our program provides you with a broad range of financial, business and soft skills plus the opportunity to earn the licences and designations that financial services institutions are looking for in the professionals they hire. Become licensed to sell stocks, bonds, mutual funds and a variety of insurance products.

Program faculty are chosen for their expertise and experience in the financial services sector, and many continue to work in the industry.

Professional Accreditations

The program is recognized by the Financial Planning Standards Council (FPSC). Specific courses within the program qualify candidates to sit for the FPSC Level 1 Examination in Financial Planning, as part of the process toward achieving the Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) designation. The program also helps to prepare students to write other qualifying exams required by the financial services industry. See Additional Costs above. These industry requirements include completion of the Canadian Securities Course (CSC®), which is a mandatory regulatory requirement in order to perform transactions of stocks, bonds and mutual funds, and the Life License Qualification Program (LLQP), which is a mandatory regulatory requirement in order to sell life, health and disability insurance.

Work Placement

Gain first-hand experience in the financial services industry with a four-week work placement which takes place either during the program or full time at the end of the program. Placements provide the valuable work experience employers seek.

Your Career

The baby boomers, the cohort of 50- to 70-year olds who account for one in three Canadians, are expected to be the wealthiest retirees in history and will likely want help managing their assets for decades to come. Be in demand advising clients on investments, retirement, trusts, taxation and insurance. Find employment as a financial advisor, financial planner or investment advisor. Or, use your entrepreneurial skills and knowledge gained in the program to open your own business or act as a consultant.

TYPICAL PROGRAM PLAN

Your MSc curriculum is designed in careful consultation with your thesis supervisor. These sample program plans provide with examples of a possible program plan based on specialization.

THESIS

As the final component of your MSc in Management degree, the thesis demonstrates your ability for independent and original research. The thesis component is the focus of your second year of study and includes the preparation of your thesis proposal, the writing and research of your thesis and your thesis defense. You will work closely with your thesis supervisor and the members of your supervisory committee during this time.
