About the Graduate Program

The UBC English Graduate Program, one of the most vibrant and wide-ranging in Canada, has been awarding the M.A. degree since 1919 and the PhD degree since 1962. Students may earn these degrees in each of two areas: English Literature and English Language. Indeed, the UBC English Department is one of the few departments in North America to offer a language program in addition to its literary programs.

English Language

The English Language program includes specializations in history and structure of language, discourse and genre analysis, and history and theory of rhetoric. Faculty members in the Language program teach and supervise research in descriptive linguistics, historical linguistics, cognitive linguistics, functional grammar, semantics, pragmatics, discourse analysis, stylistics, genre studies, and history and theory of rhetoric. Students in the English Literature program can take advantage of Language graduate courses; recent offerings include courses on reported speech and its rhetorical versatility across genres; the uses of classical rhetoric for contemporary critical practice; and cognitive approaches to the language of literature. By the same token, Language students can take advantage of the wide variety of Literature courses our department offers.

English Literature

The English Literature program includes specializations across the periods, genres, and major figures of British, North American and World Literature in English. Current research initiatives on the part of faculty include such diverse topics as the ecocritical study of Renaissance drama; the triumph of transport in Romantic poetry; the impact of radio and television on modernist poetics; the politics of post-identity in Asian American literature, and the role of war and its traumatic shocks in twentieth-century Canadian, U.S. and British literature. Graduate students can also choose to work across disciplinary fields, taking advantage of UBC's outstanding interdisciplinary programs in Medieval Studies, Canadian and U.S. Studies, Studies in Sexuality, and Science and Technology Studies, among others.

The Department of English at the University of Windsor offers two fields within the M.A. Program in English: Literature and Creative Writing, and Literature and Language. Within the Literature and Language field, there are two different options: the Thesis Option and the Course Work Option.

The Literature and Creative Writing field allows students to combine graduate-level study of literature with advanced work on creative writing in a two-term workshop and a significant independent writing project. Within the Literature and Language field, the Course Work Option offers exposure to a wide variety of topics in literature, composition, and rhetoric. The Thesis Option allows students to investigate a single topic in depth through independent, extended research with faculty supervision.

Grading

The Faculty of Graduate Studies requires that students maintain at least a 70% cumulative GPA at all times. Courses in which a grade of 70% or higher is received will be accepted for graduate credit.

In accordance with the Policy of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research, the Department of English allows the grade of Incomplete to be assigned to a student who so requests, at the discretion of the instructor, after discussion concerning the nature of the work to be completed and the time period for completion. Normally, the Department of English requires that all work must be competed within six weeks after the last date of the examination period for a letter grade to be assigned.

A record of the specific conditions must be recorded on the Incomplete form, available from the Departmental Graduate Secretary. This form must be signed by the student, the seminar instructor, and the Department head. If the work is not completed within a twelve-month period, then a permanent grade of "Incomplete" will be assigned.

Scholarships

Ontario Graduate Scholarships and SSHRC Canada Graduate Scholarships are major external sources of financial support for graduate study at the Master's level. They are highly competitive, and students are encouraged to apply for these in the fall of their final year of undergraduate study, and/or first year of graduate study.

University of Windsor scholarships and tuition bursaries are awarded by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research on a competitive basis. Entrance scholarships may be worth up to $7,000 paid out over a year.

Graduate Assistantships

Most full-time candidate-level students are awarded Graduate Assistantships. The maximum Graduate Assistantship requires 10 hours work per week during the Fall and Winter Terms for a total stipend of $5,135.20 per term (2015-16). Partial assistantships with prorated stipends may also be awarded.

Students holding Assistantships may be assigned to a number of different teaching-related duties in the Department. For example, they may be instructors in the first-year Composition course (26-100) (N.B. Graduate students assigned to teach Composition are expected to enroll in Composition Theory and Practice, 26-596), they may assist a faculty member in an undergraduate literature course, or be assigned editorial duties in conjunction with editing and publishing practicum courses. Most financial awards have early deadlines.

The English Department consists of approximately 35 full time faculty members teaching and researching in both traditional and emerging fields, housed in one of the largest and most dynamic Faculty of Arts in the country. Our distinguished graduate faculty represents a wide array of approaches to the study of literature, including Holocaust and trauma studies; postcolonial literatures; medieval and early modern studies; Canadian literature; American literature, Victorian iterature, digital humanities, comic and graphic texts, gender studies and cultural studies. Our faculty members publish on translation theory, early modern literature, graphic novels, performance theory and practice, homoerotic poetry in the Renaissance, experimental poetry, medieval manuscripts, indigenous literature, speculative fiction, young adult literature and youth studies, among many fields, including traditional historical periods. In 2014, the department saw the investiture of a new Canadian Research Chair in Creative Writing.

We offer a strong, established and distinctive graduate program, with two MA options (a thesis-based route and our new course-based route) as well as a PhD: with all degrees, students can select a creative writing option, completing a creative thesis or research project. Our students present conference papers all over the world; our creative-writing graduates (and students) are winning prizes and publishing widely in every genre; our graduates hold academic positions across the country, as well as proceeding to careers in publishing, business, and government.

MA Program

The MA in English at the University of Calgary offers students the opportunity to complete a range of graduate courses as well as undertake an independent research project in either the one year Course-Based MA or the two year Thesis-Based MA. Areas of specialization include but are not limited to digital and media studies, medieval and early modern literature, dramatic literature and performance studies, graphic literature and comics, cultural and gender studies, nineteenth-century studies, postcolonial literatures, Canadian literature, American studies. In either option, students are able to specialize with a creative writing project under the supervision of one of our internationally recognized writers.

In both programs, students may elect to do the creative writing option.

The Master of Arts program offers students in a wide range of disciplines the opportunity to earn a master’s degree by writing a thesis and successfully completing a limited number of courses. The number and details of the courses are determined within the first semester of the student's program.

Students may complete their degrees in either a full- or part-time capacity. Full-time students complete a 24-month program while part-time students complete a 48-month program. Part-time students will normally complete all required course work in the first 24 months, with the subsequent months committed to continued research and production of the thesis.

Although degrees are awarded in specific disciplines, the program is administered centrally by the School of Graduate Studies, rather than by individual departments or faculties/schools.

Course detail

Graduate degrees traditionally have been awarded for the successful completion of a satisfactory thesis. The thesis route expresses the fundamental tradition of academic scholarship. It also relates to the University’s undergraduate programs, because the creation of a thesis in any discipline calls for a range of skills which are central to the liberal education tradition, including analysis and synthesis of ideas, empirical investigations, the construction and articulation of arguments, and writing skills.

Because of the nature of the M.A. program, the thesis forms the central requirement of the program. At the master’s level, a thesis involves close collaboration between supervisor and student. Consequently, it is necessary for a candidate to establish contact with potential supervisors prior to application for admission. Candidates seeking potential supervisors should contact either the relevant academic department or the School of Graduate Studies.

About the department

The Department of English offers students the opportunity to study the properties and powers of language—the fundamental means by which we communicate our values, our ideals and vision.

Courses in the fundamentals of the three main literary genres, poetry, prose and drama, prepare students for the close study of major works and periods of literature from the British, American, Canadian and Post-Colonial traditions.

In addition, the Department offers a variety of special courses in Rhetoric, the history of language, literary theory, gender, children’s literature and creative writing.

At the senior level, there are more intensive courses concentrating on specific topics such as particular authors. These are conducted in small seminar classes which stimulate open and intensive discussion between students and instructor.

Western’s program in Comparative Literature has recognized strengths in various literatures (especially – but not limited to – American, Canadian, Classical, English, French & Francophone, German, Hindi, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian and Spanish). What distinguishes it from similar programs across the country (Toronto, Alberta, Montreal...) is the insistent focus on critical theory, postcolonial literature, East-West cultural relationships and inter-media studies (particularly visual art and film).

Many of those teaching in the program are well established scholars of Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and 18-20th-century cultures. Our MA students are employed as Teaching Assistants.

Delivery Model

This unique program allows each student to work directly with faculty to create an individualized schedule of study that draws together courses of personal and professional interest from other masters and graduate certificate programs at Royal Roads University. Students select no more than 50 per cent of their courses from any one program to assure interdisciplinary breadth of study. Individuals may do one on-campus residency in another masters program, or they may complete their degree completely online.

Online Courses
Online courses are not independent studies courses; they have deadlines for assignments and, more importantly, require posting deadlines to foster the fruitful exchange of ideas that make virtual communities thrive. In building your schedule of study, working professionals should consider taking no more than one online course at a time as each course can require up to 20 hours of work per week.

On-Campus Residencies
Students who elect to do a residency work on two or three courses simultaneously in a blended model of delivery. Residencies begin with a pre-residency online, followed by two to three weeks of intensive on-campus coursework and subsequently, several weeks of post-residency work. While the MA in Interdisciplinary Studies program recommends a residency in another masters program during the course of studies, residency options demand unimpeded time on-campus.

The MA in Interdisciplinary Studies program is driven by a student’s interdisciplinary research and career interests. A prospective student’s application needs to provide a rationale for the proposed combination of courses and academic fields of study.

Whereas most graduate interdisciplinary degrees draw from traditional, single disciplines (e.g., sociology, psychology, ecology, etc.), Royal Roads’ MA in Interdisciplinary Studies program offers a unique take on interdisciplinarity. This program draws not from single disciplines but from multidisciplinary academic program areas (e.g., humanitarian studies, environmental education and communication, leadership, etc.); in addition, the program focuses on applied research instrumental to working professionals’ career goals.

Individualized Schedule of Study

There are three paths through the MA in Interdisciplinary Studies degree:
Coursework - A student completes 36 credit hours of on campus or online courses
-6 credits in two required courses in interdisciplinary theory and methods
-30 credits accumulated by completing courses in MA or graduate certificate programs

Major Project - A student completes 36 credit hours of on campus or online courses
-6 credits in two required courses in interdisciplinary theory and methods
-18 credits accumulated by completing courses in MA or graduate certificate programs
-12 credits dedicated to a major project usually aligned with a student’s professional field

Thesis - A student completes 36 credit hours of on campus or online courses
-6 credits of required courses in interdisciplinary theory and methods

-12 credits dedicated to a master’s thesis

Where needed, a student may take advantage of a directed study course to further familiarity with scholarship in a particular area of study.

Students feel particularly welcome because of our small class sizes. They gain personal support and invaluable feedback from nationally-acclaimed professors and have opportunities to work with them on research and creative projects and on departmental publications, including Canada's longest continuously published literary journal, The Fiddlehead, and on the student-run, national literary journal, QWERTY. Faculty from both UNB Fredericton and UNB Saint John currently supervised around 40 graduate student in the MA and PhD programs on project in a wide range of fields.

Our cozy, quiet campus is the perfect workshopping environment for creative writers wanting to develop a book-length manuscript. Our PhD in Creative Writing is one of very few offered in Canada. In the academic streams, students examine important works of literature, undertake original research, and build their critical vocabularies. Their research is supported by excellent library resources. Graduate students in English acquire strong research, writing, editing and communication skills and develop connections with other academics, writers and publications across Canada. Doctoral students also gain exceptional applied teaching experience through the Teaching Apprenticeship Program.
