Graduate Programs

The University academic year begins the first week of September, and the academic year is divided into a 13 week first term - September, October, November - and a 14 week (including reading week in mid-February) second term - January, February, March. There is a formal examination period scheduled at the end of each term. The four month summer term is devoted to research. The usual period for completing an MSc is two to two and one half years while that for a PhD is about five years. All students accepted for the MSc or PhD will be offered a package of funding which includes a research assistantship and a teaching assistant ship - two years guaranteed for the MSc, five years guaranteed for the PhD.

The normal times for a student to begin their programme of study are September 1 or January 1. It is also possible to begin May 1 upon Departmental approval and agreed supervisor selection.

The Department offers MSc and PhD degrees - each degree requires graduate courses and research work reported in a thesis. Each degree requires 12 credits of course work, unless the candidate already holds an approved MSc. Most courses are worth 3 credits.

Students are generally encouraged to complete all their course requirements in their first year if possible in order to allow a more efficient use of time for their research projects. A one credit pass/fail seminar course is part of the requirements. An individual programme is designed by consultation between the graduate advisor, the student's supervisor (if known), and the student at the time of his or her arrival. There are no entrance or cumulative examinations.

Students accepted into the MSc program may transfer directly to a PhD degree program after one year without completing their MSc, provided they have completed in the first year a minimum of 12 credits of course work with an overall average of at least 80%, 9 credits of 80% standing, and one of the seminar courses CHEM 540A, 540B or 540C.

The progress of each PhD student is evaluated once a year at a meeting of the faculty. A supervisory committee is formed for each student; this committee normally consists of the research supervisor and three other faculty members, one of whom is chosen by the student. In their second year, PhD students are required to pass a comprehensive examination. This exam consists of an oral report of their research progress and questioning on their work and the background related to it - this meeting is normally the last requirement before the thesis and must be passed in one or two attempts to achieve candidacy.

At the completion of the thesis, both MSc and PhD students must defend their results and thesis at a formal oral defense. In the case of PhD students an external examiner, chosen in consultation with the supervisor and the graduate advisor, is also asked by the Faculty of Graduate Studies to review the thesis.

A Message from the Graduate Coordinator

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Windsor offers an excellent environment for the pursuit of a graduate education. Our Department is enthusiastic, friendly, cooperative and rejuvenated. Of our 23 faculty, nine have been hired since 2000 to complement the established faculty. As summarised in this brochure, our Department has research groups active in all of the traditional areas of Chemistry and Biochemistry and we have also recently formed several new multi-disciplinary research programmes, including The Centre for Catalysis and Materials Research (CCMR) and The Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research (GLIER). We invite you to join our exciting and growing department.

In addition to our people, the Department’s state-of-the-art equipment and completely renovated laboratories provide us with research facilities that are comparable to, or even exceed, those found in the Chemistry Departments of much larger universities. In addition to a complete array of spectrometers and other standard synthetic and characterisation equipment, we have many instruments that are not typically available in a single department. To give only a few notable examples: we have two CCD-equipped X-ray diffractometers; solid-state NMR facilities; an AFM imaging system; Raman and IR microscopes; a fluorescence imaging system; and much more! Furthermore, our geographic location puts us in close proximity to Wayne State University and other large American research universities such as the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. This situation allows the members of our Department convenient access to the other institutions’ facilities, conferences, and visiting speakers.

The greater Windsor region has a highly-diverse population of around 325,000 people. The city boasts dozens of excellent and unique restaurants, a thriving night-life, numerous festivals and events on the waterfront, and a variety of parks and outdoor recreation areas. Windsor has a remarkably low cost of living and has one of warmest climates in the country. In addition, our proximity to the Detroit metropolitan area (pop. ca. 5 million) and the United States provides us with numerous unique advantages over other cities in southern Ontario. For example, one can conveniently attend professional sporting events, major concerts, world-class art galleries, and numerous other attractions that are all located less than one hour drive from the University of Windsor. Furthermore, the Detroit International Airport has flights around the globe and provides us with an often less expensive alternative to flying via Toronto. Overall, Windsor has the benefits of a major metropolis combined with the advantages of a smaller city.

The Department of Chemistry of Memorial University is one of the largest Chemistry departments in Atlantic Canada, with 23 faculty, 13 permanent laboratory instructors and instructional assistants, and a number of support and research staff. Over 60 graduate students currently work in the Department’s research laboratories. Faculty members’ research interests touch on all major subfields of Chemistry, including analytical, physical, inorganic, organic, theoretical/computational, environmental/marine, and materials.

The MSc program involves courses and a thesis and can be completed in two years of full-time study. The program prepares students for careers in government and industrial research, college teaching, and university research and teaching.

Our degrees are centered on the development and performance of an original research project, culminating in a thesis. UNB Chemistry has a long history and an outstanding reputation, both nationally and internationally, for accomplishments in research. Our faculty lead innovative research programmes in all key areas of modern chemistry.

Recent graduates have gone on to work in industries including pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals, materials science and chemical analysis, as well as education and academia. The broad range of research expertise provided by our faculty, coupled with excellent technical support and a collaborative environment, make our department an excellent environment for young researchers to develop their expertise and to make significant scientific contributions.

We generally have about 15-20 graduate students in the program. Our graduate students have access to extensive research labs in the department – each research group have their own dedicated research space and facilities.

There are also some shared instrumental facilities, both within the department (e.g., nuclear magnetic resonance and X-ray crystallography facilities) and elsewhere on campus (e.g., Microscopy and Microanalysis Facility). Technical support includes both a glass-blowing shop and an electronics shop housed in the department as well as the Science Stores for provision of research supplies and chemicals.

The Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry offers graduate research in pure science, engineering fundamentals, and engineering applications. Graduate programs lead to the degrees of Master of Applied Science (MASc), Master of Engineering (MEng), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The MEng program differs from the MASc and PhD programs in that it is oriented to learning through prescribed courses rather than through research.
