DESIGN AND STUDIO-BASED
Our Master of Planning program is a distinctly different design- and studio-based program. This studio emphasis means that students are engaged with real-world problems, with real clients, often helping to directly shape the built environment, and that 3-dimensional and spatial thinking are vitally important. Studio-based learning is applied learning -- synthesizing the skills and knowledge gained throughout the program to address complex problems at a variety of scales, and emphasizing a design approach.

AN ENTERPRISING REGION
As the only accredited planning program in Alberta, we are located in Canada's most enterprising city. The Calgary region is a real-world laboratory with a wide range of opportunities and challenges that Canadian cities and communities face.

INTERDISCIPLINARITY
Also unique to EVDS is the strong tradition of interdisciplinary learning involving Planning, Architecture, and Landscape Architecture. Students are exposed to the interdisciplinary nature of environmental design through several touch-points between programs.

SUSTAINABILITY
Building on the strong tradition of EVDS in ecological design and environmental science, environmental sustainability is a core principle that runs throughout the MPlan program and is a lens through which planning problems are viewed and solutions are crafted.

The Master of Engineering Leadership (MEL) in High Performance Buildings is an intensive one-year degree program for engineers and architects who want to make a difference in the building sector. You’ll graduate from this program with a strong technical foundation in energy systems design modelling, equipping you to be a technical leader in the integrated design, construction and maintenance of green building energy systems. This technical foundation is balanced by courses in leadership and business, giving you a powerful skillset for overseeing the design of green buildings, from the initial planning stages through to implementation and operation.

The project-based curriculum has three primary areas of focus: architectural courses on green building design and regenerative development; engineering courses on energy modelling and design, and two interdisciplinary capstone projects where you will work with clients to develop real-world solutions to their design challenges. While 60 per cent of your classes will focus on your technical specialization, the remaining 40 per cent are leadership development courses that will enhance your business, communication and people skills. Delivery of the management and leadership courses are in partnership with UBC's Sauder School of Business.

Graduates of this program will have the technical and leadership skills to improve the energy performance of existing buildings and design integrated high-performance energy systems for new buildings.

What Makes The Program Unique?

The MEL in High Performance Building degree was developed in close collaboration with industry partners, who spoke to us of the high demand for high-performance building experts. Government and industry employers are seeking professionals who have the creative and visionary skills to develop the processes and systems that can lead to lasting change, and who have the cross-functional technical and business skills to propose innovative solutions, manage teams and direct projects.

To complement your academic studies, professional development workshops, delivered by industry leaders, are offered throughout the year-long program. These extra-curricular sessions cover a range of topics such as:
-Leadership fundamentals
-Giving and receiving feedback
-Learning how to deliver a successful pitch
-Effective presenting

The workshops also provide opportunities to network with professionals from a wide range of industries, UBC faculty and students in the MEL and MHLP programs.

Funding Sources

The Faculty of Applied Science offers a limited number of $5,000 merit-based awards to MEL students. All applicants who submitted their application before July 1 are automatically considered for this award. You do not need to submit a separate application. The merit-based awards are given to selected applicants and only the successful recipients will be notified before the program starts in January.

Aside from the merit-based award, there no other scholarships, grants or funding offered by UBC for MEL students.

Career Options

Energy use in buildings is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, making it a high priority to design more energy-efficient buildings and retrofit existing buildings. This is a growing sector, with opportunities in consulting, construction, manufacturing and government. With governments at all levels increasing the standards for energy conservation, there is a need for professionals who can take leadership in designing the integrated high-performing energy systems in our built environment. Examples of typical graduate job roles include Engineering consultant, LEED professional, city or municipal planner, code and bylaw developer, project manager in architectural & engineering firms, building energy auditor and energy manager.

The Master of Architecture (MArch) graduate degree program offers an accredited three-year curriculum. This professional course of study is highly demanding with a large proportion of the curriculum being required coursework. Design studios are integrated with courses in architecture history and theory, technical and material systems, and design media and representation. Within this challenging program, opportunities to develop individual identity and special skills are made possible through the selection of special topic design studios, thoughtful engagement with electives, and especially through the execution of the Graduation Project.
Architecture coordinates a Co-op program where academic education is accompanied by opportunities to practice in architectural firms or agencies. Students actively advance their skill sets in the contemporary environment of the profession. The Master of Landscape Architecture (M.L.A.) degree is designed for students seeking admission to the profession. Full-time students normally complete this program in three years. Students with a UBC-recognized undergraduate degree in Architecture, Environmental Design, or Landscape Architecture may apply for admission to a two-year 72-credit variant of the professional M.L.A. Program, comprised of the final two years of M.L.A. design studio courses, as well as courses required for professional degree accreditation by the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects. Founded by Dr. H.P. Oberlander in 1951, the School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) is one of the oldest planning schools in Canada. Its Vision is “Sustainability through the Democratization of Planning,” and in achieving that Vision, SCARP's Mission is “to advance the transition to sustainability through excellence in integrated policy and planning research, professional education and community service.” The objective of SCARP’s new Master of Community and Regional Planning (MCRP) program is to further the Vision and Mission of the School by providing students, through cutting-edge content and innovative pedagogy, with the essential theory, skills, methods, and critical thinking and analytical tools they need to address the complex social and environmental issues of a rapidly urbanizing world. The accredited MSPL degree is an intensive (6 semester) program of study combines research, outreach, and ongoing interaction with faculty to create a stimulating learning environment, and affords our students a wealth of opportunities.

MPlan - MPLAN RPD

This one-year (3 semester) MPLAN degree is specifically designed for professionals with five or more years of planning experience. Alternately, new grads from a Professional discipline such as Planning, Landscape Architecture, Architecture or Engineering (with a minimum B+ average) may also apply.
