What’s it like to study a Masters in Cambridge?
As well as the pleasure and prestige of studying in one of the world’s most famous university cities, you’ll also find plenty of activities and experiences to occupy your free time as a postgraduate in Cambridge.
You might take up traditional student activities such as punting along the river Cam (and engage in traditional student employments such as punting tourists along the river Cam).
Or, if you’re looking for something a little less sedate to break up your studies, you might check out Cambridge’s winning combination of some of the England’s most popular music festivals and the largest UK beer festival outside London.
Renowned local entertainment venues include the Cambridge Corn Exchange, and the ADC Theatre. The latter is home to the Cambridge Footlights, a drama club that has produced some of Britain’s most famous comedians. So, in the unlikely event that you do get fed up with postgraduate study in Cambridge, the city might be able to offer you an alternative career (probably best to keep the books or lab coat handy just in case though!).
Universities in Cambridge
Originally founded in 1209, the University of Cambridge is now part of the elite Russell Group of UK Universities and is routinely ranked as one of the best institutions in the world. Its historic buildings dominate the city skyline and its famous alumni include figures as diverse as Sir Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Alan Turing and Lord Byron.
In addition to the University of Cambridge itself, there are two other higher education institutions in Cambridge: a campus of Anglia Ruskin University and a regional centre of the Open University.
Careers in Cambridge
Cambridge has an innovative, technology-based economy, and the area has been dubbed ‘Silicon Fen’. There are several research parks in and around the city, often with close links to the University of Cambridge and its constituent colleges. Founded in 1973, the Cambridge Science Park is the oldest of its kind in the UK and the largest research park in Europe. Some of the companies based at the Cambridge Science Park include Huawei, Beko and Toshiba.
