The MArch program was established at the university in 1971, and has evolved to develop a distinctive approach to architectural education, research, and practice. Our approach engages the contemporary challenges facing the discipline of architecture through our commitment to, and expertise in, critical practice, digital design and fabrication, building performance and responsiveness, and cultural theory. Situated within the Faculty of Environmental Design, the MArch program takes a broad approach to both design and sustainability, understanding and producing the built environment in relation to ecological concerns, economic realities, and social needs. We expect our students and alumni to be leaders in the field; to date, many of them have become exactly that.

Driven by an energetic and dedicated group of faculty members and supplemented by a very generous scholarship program for its students, the Master of Architecture Program is well poised to assume an ever more significant role in the coming decade. During the last several years faculty, students, and alumni have received widespread recognition for their achievements in local, regional and national media and awards programs.

An education in architecture can lead to many career opportunities.

Come and be part of Canada’s newest school of Landscape Architecture. The University of Calgary launched the Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) in the Faculty of Environmental Design (EVDS) in September 2015. This is the first graduate program in landscape architecture in Canada to be launched since 1980, and is situated in the geographically and culturally dynamic context of Alberta and Western Canada. Our program is strategically positioned to engage with the critical sociocultural and ecological challenges of place- making, climate change and resilience. Our MLA is intended as a program for the 21st century - to be leaders and to train leaders in becoming catalysts for positive local and global change.

The Master of Landscape Architecture program complements the existing professional, accredited programs in Architecture and Planning to create a strong, robust and inter-related triad of graduate programs dealing with the built environment. The MLA is a three-year course-based program consisting of a foundation year plus two years at the Master’s level, and we will be seeking accreditation through the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA).

The MLA Program at the University of Calgary is a member of the Landscape Architecture Accreditation Council (LAAC) Candidacy
program, which is specifically designed to allow the LAAC to work closely with the program to position it for a successful initial accreditation. Immediately following the graduation of our first cohort in the spring of 2018, we will be applying for accreditation.
Assuming that the review is successful, the program will be formally accredited, and this will be retroactive to all graduates of the first class from the spring of 2018. We are working closely with the LAAC to ensure that our curriculum addresses the requirements of accreditation, and anticipate a preliminary review visit in early 2017 to help us to prepare.

The program in EVDS is unique and distinctive:
-It is a program for the 21st Century and aims to sustainably address the critical issues facing settlements, societies and environments, using a landscape-based approach
-It emphasizes and builds on the faculty’s strengths in the areas of urban design, ecological design, regional planning, and cultural landscapes
-Our faculty emphasis on interdisciplinary is expressed through the overlapping relationships with the Master of Architecture and Master of Planning programs
-Our faculty structure, which allows a student to ladder from a course-based professional degree program to a thesis-based research degree (MEDes or PhD), facilitates the further development of creativity and innovative approaches to critical issues into the future

Starting in fall 2014, graduate students can enroll in the new Bioinformatics Specialization, as part of the Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Graduate Program. This unique program at the University of Calgary will provide students with advanced training in the development of computational approaches for understanding large-scale biomedical data.

Come study science in the Canadian Rocky Mountains! Research in our department is diverse, and at the forefront of many fields. Research interests span from biochemistry to molecular, cellular and developmental biology, genetics, immunology and bioinformatics, with applications to cancer and clinical research. Our departmental members are grouped into four "streams" with common research interests: Molecular and Developmental Genetics, Molecular Biology of Disease, Genomics Proteomics and Bioinformatics and Cell Signalling and Structure. Additionally our faculty are members of the Faculty of Medicine's research-based Institutes and Centres.

Our department offers outstanding graduate training leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees and postdoctoral training. Effective April 1, 2014, guaranteed minimum stipends will be $23,000 for Ph.D. students and $21,000 for M.Sc. students. All students admitted into the BMB graduate program during the 2013-2014 year, and receiving the guaranteed minimum stipend, will receive a BMB Entrance Award. This award is valued at $5,000 for PhD students ($2,500 to be paid in their first year, and $2,500 to be paid in their second year), and $2,500 for MSc students. Entrance Awards will be reduced by any amount a stipend is over the program's minimum levels.

Those with outstanding achievement or potential will be eligible for additional support through scholarships and subsidies.

New students may spend their first six months in the program doing rotations in up to three different laboratories, although they may also apply to directly enter a research laboratory.

Students in the Biomedical Engineering (BME) Graduate Program are interested in cutting-edge, multidisciplinary biomedical research. Read more
Students in the Biomedical Engineering (BME) Graduate Program are interested in cutting-edge, multidisciplinary biomedical research. The BME Graduate Program enables graduate students to undertake MEng (Thesis), MSc, or PhD programs that intersect the fields of engineering, kinesiology, medicine, science and veterinary medicine.

The BME Graduate Program is jointly coordinated by the Schulich School of Engineering, Cumming School of Medicine and Faculty of Kinesiology, with additional participating faculty members from the Faculties of Science and Veterinary Medicine. The BME Graduate Program supports the University of Calgary’s Engineering Solutions for Health: Biomedical Engineering Research Strategy. By coordinating and consolidating complementary research and teaching programs across the University of Calgary and linking with health care facilities, the BME Graduate Program forms an integral part of a Canadian centre of excellence in BME graduate education and research.

The unique, multi-disciplinary, design of this program means our trainees have access to cutting edge research laboratories and equipment.

The BME Graduate Program was approved by The University of Calgary Board of Governors in 1997. It was initially funded by a three-year Whitaker Foundation Special Opportunity Award, part of a joint proposal with the University of Alberta. Provincially based activities continue to this day and are highlighted by the now University of Calgary-led Alberta BME Conference. This annual meeting now includes participation from the University of Lethbridge, as well as other western Canadian BME programs. The meeting attracts over 160 individuals and has been held every year since 2000 in Banff, Alberta.

While the BME Graduate Program is an established program supporting a diverse research community, it continues to evolve in response to new opportunities and changing needs of students and the biomedical community in Alberta. It is a key component of The University of Calgary’s Eyes High vision and supports both the university’s academic and research plans, particularly the strategic research theme of Engineering Healthcare Solutions.

Areas of Biomedical Engineering

-Bioelectricity
-Biomechanics
-Cell and tissue engineering (or biomaterials)
-Imaging
-Bioinstrumentation
-Clinical engineering
-Rehabilitation engineering

The University of Calgary is recognized as a leader in the first four areas, and is actively growing expertise in bioinstrumentation. Bioelectricity, biomechanics, cell and tissue engineering (biomaterials) and imaging represent the current four themes of the BME Graduate Program.

BME research at the University of Calgary is carried out in numerous locations throughout engineering, kinesiology, medicine, science, and veterinary medicine. BME active university and hospital-based research centers and institutes include, the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute, the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta, the McCaig Institute for Bone and Joint Health, the Calgary Centre for Innovative Technology, the Experimental Imaging Centre, the Human Performance Laboratory, the Pharmaceutical Production Research Facility, the Seaman Family MR Research Centre, and the Sports Medicine Centre.
