Learning and teaching

Many core elements of the programme are delivered by the College of Social Sciences, so you will be undertaking the modules with other students from across the College. However, your dissertation will be undertaken and supervised within the Department. In addition, there is an induction programme during the first two weeks of the term, which is compulsory, but non-assessed and a programme of skills training which is delivered at University-level, mainly by the Staff Development Unit, throughout the year. You are encouraged to attend all the modules in the programme which are appropriate to you. You must discuss your skills training needs with your designated supervisor in the first week of the first term.

This MA is recognised by the ESRC for the provision of research methods training as Year 1 of a '1+3' programme of doctoral study. It is also available as a stand-alone Masters. Home/EU students may enter into a departmental competition to be nominated for the ESRC open competition for '1+3' or '+3' funding (the '1+3' award covers the MA and provides three years' further funding for PhD research; for '+3' funding you must already have an ESRC-recognised research methods MA degree or equivalent).

Course details

Business today is global and no company can be confident of surviving unless it appreciates this fact and understands its implications.

Multinational corporations are very short of managers from countries other than their domestic base, who have the understanding to operate comfortably in different countries.

Small and medium-sized firms with strong niche positions are also increasingly looking for talented and well-trained staff to help them undertake international expansion. In major emerging economies such as Brazil, China and India, successful domestic firms are poised to become multinational through expanding overseas. They too welcome graduates with the appropriate knowledge about doing business internationally.

The MSc International Business has been accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA). The accreditation, aimed at Pre-Experience Masters in General Management (PEMM), takes into account criteria such as the breadth of the syllabus, the quality of teaching staff, careers support available and the inclusion of a research dissertation. This accreditation aims to safeguard standards of excellence and ensure clarity about the purpose of various general management qualifications in an increasing market.

For business graduates please also see our MSc Management programme.

Learning and teaching

Taught modules contribute towards two thirds of your final assessment. The dissertation contributes one third. Modules are assessed using written examinations or coursework. Coursework can take a variety of forms, including reports, essays, group presentations and practical assignments. Some coursework is group based.

Employability

The Business School enjoys active and close links with industry and the financial community. Many of our programmes have input from organisations such as GE, Biersdorf and Accenture.

This MSc is open to graduates from any discipline, and will equip you with a comprehensive understanding of relevant and current international issues, giving you the opportunity to take your career anywhere in the world. Covering topics such as globalisation, operations and procurement and corporate governance, the programme offers a good balance of theoretical knowledge and practical application.

The programme is designed to enhance your career prospects by building your knowledge in key areas of international business. You will have the opportunity to draw on the talents of globally respected scholars and teachers whose expertise, combined with the breadth of the syllabus, will prepare you for your new international career.

Course details

Business today is global. No company can be confident of surviving unless it appreciates this fact and understands its implications.

For graduates wishing to develop a career in international business, the opportunities span a wide range of possibilities.

The programme, run by the International Management and Strategy Group, draws on the talents of internationally respected scholars and highly respected teachers. Their expertise covers globalisation, the international aspects of accounting and finance, corporate governance, human resource management, marketing, organisation of multinational corporations, operations and procurement, and strategy. Regional specialists with expertise on Africa, China, Europe and Latin America also teach on the programme.

This accreditation aims to safeguard standards of excellence and ensure clarity about the purpose of various general management qualifications in an increasingly competitive market.
