Plot the academic course that meets your professional needs by choosing from three options built into the MEd in Business/Workforce Development.

Select from a business specialization with a possible path toward teaching certification, a workforce specialization focusing on training and technology, and an administrative specialization targeting curriculum development and supervision of vocational programs.

Designed to meet the needs of a wide variety of individuals, this program includes a common core of 18 credits, plus 12 credits of courses in your specialization that meet your professional needs and interest.

BUSINESS SPECIALIZATION

The Business specialization is of interest to individuals desiring to enhance their knowledge of pedagogy, study current business issues and trends, and expand the use of technology in the learning environment. In addition, an opportunity is available for an individual to complete the requirements for initial Pennsylvania K-12 teaching certification in Business, Computer, and Information Technology (business education). This opportunity requires the completion of additional course work beyond the 30 credits required for the MEd.

WORKFORCE SPECIALIZATION

The Workforce specialization is of interest to individuals desiring to broaden their understanding of business, to enhance their knowledge of industry training, and to update their understanding of new technologies used in the workforce.

ADMINISTRATIVE SPECIALIZATION

The Administrative specialization provides an option for candidates interested in curriculum development and supervision of vocational programs. An enhancement of this specialization is the opportunity to complete the requirements for Pennsylvania Department of Education certification as a supervisor of vocational education. This opportunity requires the completion of additional coursework beyond the 30 credits required for the MEd.

Courses can be taken on either a full- or part-time basis, with classes offered during the evening; a full schedule of course offerings is available in the summer. Needs of each student are addressed through individual attention, flexible scheduling, and opportunities for original research.

Upon admission to the School of Graduate Studies and Research, the student is assigned an advisor to assist in tailoring the program to meet individual goals. This flexibility is a key feature of the program.

In our master’s program in Health Services Administration, you’ll pursue courses designed to provide you with marketable skills in human resources, health care delivery, and health care administration. This degree can lead you into leadership positions in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, insurance companies, and health organizations (nonprofit and for-profit).

WHY A MASTER’S IN HEALTH SERVICES ADMINISTRATION AT IUP?

The role of a health services administrator includes the specialized application of employment relations knowledge, the improvement of individual and public health, and the enhancement of health delivery systems. This program provides students with an effective balance of coursework in health services, employee relations, and research methodology that will enable them to excel in this role.

A one-of-a-kind program; our program is not a health policy nor a health care administration program, but rather it offers a unique combination of health policy, health care administration, and employment relations all in a single program.

Flexible delivery—our courses are offered part-time, weekday evenings, and online to accommodate working professionals.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES

-Use financial systems, organizational structures, and market strategies to achieve optimum performance in health care organizations.
-Analyze legislative, regulatory, and political processes and their impact on health services.
-Analyze ethical and legal imperatives influencing health care.
-Exhibit leadership skills in conflict resolution, human resource management, change theory, interpersonal relations, and effective negotiations.
-Manage information resources (statistical and nonstatistical analysis) to assist in effective decision making.
-Conduct research addressing health care issues and focusing on outcome measurements.
-Analyze the health of populations, determinants of health, health risks, and behaviors in diverse populations.

GAIN ACADEMIC EXPERTISE FROM TWO DEPARTMENTS

The Master of Science in Health Services Administration degree consists of 36 credits. The Department of Nursing and Allied Health Professions will offer 18 credits and the Department of Employment and Labor Relations will offer 15.

Students choose one three-credit elective from IUP courses that are appropriate for their needs and interests and meet the program objectives. Courses offered by the Employment and Labor Relations, Sociology, and Psychology departments might be of particular interest to students for this elective.

Students that anticipate continuing their education in a doctoral program could choose to complete a thesis instead of an elective course. The thesis would require six credit hours, bringing their degree total to 39 credits.

CHECK OUT YOUR OPTIONS: FOUR CAMPUS LOCATIONS, ONLINE CLASSES

BE DONE IN ONE, TAKE TWO FOR TWO, OR MORE

You can complete the master’s degree in one year full-time, take the option of one online course and one evening course over two years, or spread the courses out over as many as five years. Choose what works best for you.

The MA in Student Affairs in Higher Education program represents what a well-rounded academic program is all about—academic excellence, plus geographical, cultural, and ethnic diversity. Coursework and assistantships—held by about 90 percent of our students—blend academic achievement with real-world responsibilities so that you are fully prepared for entry-level and mid-management jobs, depending on your past experience.

STUDENTS FROM A VARIETY OF PROFESSIONAL AND ACADEMIC BACKGROUNDS

A typical SAHE entering class includes graduates of private and public institutions, from very small to very large, from all sections of the country. Many students are returning to graduate school after having worked for a few years.

YOUR COHORT BECOMES PART OF YOUR PROFESSIONAL NETWORK

All students join a fall cohort and either begin classes in the summer or in fall. With the cohort model you surround yourself with like-minded learners who will become members of your professional network. You progress through a prescribed sequence of courses as a group, and, together, you’ll discover the history of your profession while mastering the theories and techniques that have proven effective when working with diverse campus populations.

THE MA IN STUDENT AFFAIRS IN HIGHER EDUCATION

This program introduces you to the key principles and responsibilities of this area of study. Practical experiences provided by your assistantship and practicums help transition you from the classroom to your first job in the field.

A minimum of 42 credits (36 required and 6 credits of elective or thesis), a portfolio requirement, and the equivalent of two academic years of full-time study are required to earn the Master of Arts degree.

Student Affairs is an applied science field and, as such, you will:
-Understand theories of personality and human development.
-Learn elements of research.
-Acquire specific skills and techniques for helping others learn, grow, and develop.
-Comprehend organizational management theory and practice.
-Complete a variety of practice-oriented courses.

You will also demonstrate professional competence by writing either a thesis or completing six hours of approved electives along with a final semester portfolio completed during the final semester.
