This specialist pathway will enable you to engage in a critical dialogue about the strategic importance of human resource management (HRM) in international firms, and gain insights into contemporary issues in HRM, such as diversity management, talent management and E-HRM. You will be taught by staff from both research and practice backgrounds.

The business context for managing human resources has changed significantly in recent years due to economic, political, social and technological forces. Competition in global business has led to significant interest and research into which HRM policies and practices lead to enhanced organisational performance. Another area of strategic focus for HRM, within multinational companies in particular, is the ease and speed at which knowledge can be developed and disseminated.

This course will provide you with internationally applicable business skills, particularly in HRM, which have become essential for business leaders in the current market. You will develop your analytical skills, creativity and independent thinking about the way in which HRM can shape organisational performance in the context of continuous change and the globalisation of business.

This course will develop your skills and knowledge in international business across a range of areas including finance, and prepare you for work in an international organisation.

The Roehampton MBA is designed to prepare students for the challenges of senior management within an international environment. You will gain a foundation in the key operational and functional areas of business and management, and develop knowledge on strategic management and decision-making. Career and personal development

MBA students have the opportunity to participate in a range of talks and activities designed to help them develop their personal and career management skills. Some past examples are described below.

Guest speaker sessions

John Lees, an internationally recognised career coach and careers writer, shared a number of insights into the changing job market and the skills individuals need to manage their career. Students were provided with a number of practical tools to help them identify their skills, focus on their career drivers, as well as think about their ideal job and the strategies needed to secure employment in a world where many jobs are never advertised.

Vicky Reeves, entrepreneur and Managing Director of the London-based web solutions company ChameleonNet, gave an inspiring and candid talk on the highs and lows of developing a successful business. She talked about how she has grown the company from a micro business to one that now employs around 30 people. She spoke about the skills that she has developed along the journey, how to go about getting the right advice and support, as well as providing some humorous stories to demonstrate the creative skills needed when running your own business.

Group projects

Students have worked on a number of group projects. One of these involved producing a design proposal for a dedicated postgraduate common room within the School. The objectives being to build a more cohesive postgraduate community; create a ‘third place’ to exchange ideas, share knowledge and maximise the resources of the University and thus improve the Roehampton learning experience among the postgraduate community. Students were given a budget to work within and had to present their proposals to a number of key decision makers across the University.

Beyond your MBA

The Roehampton MBA is fully recognised by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). Successful completion of the programme leads to eligibility for membership of the CMI and the potential to gain chartered manager status.

Career support

You can seek guidance from professional staff from Roehampton’s Career Service to develop your career path on completion of the MBA. You can browse through the comprehensive careers library, which holds an extensive range of occupational information, literature from professional bodies, and self-help materials on CVs, applications and interviews. You can also arrange individual, confidential interviews to discuss career plans, applications, interviews and job offers. Course summary

This postgraduate programme is designed to offer professionals the opportunity to engage in systematic and analytical enquiry into the theory and practice of leadership and management in education. Students will use the knowledge and skills gained to improve their own practice, in leadership and management roles, across the whole range of educational institutions and related organisations.

While keeping a concern for people and human flourishing at its forefront, the course will strengthen your understanding of advanced scholarship in educational leadership and management, and of how the established techniques of research and enquiry are used to create and interpret knowledge. Using this approach, you will be able to critically examine the organisations and systems in which you work, and achieve outcomes for stakeholders. 

This course will encourage you to specialise in your particular areas of interest, reflecting your professional role and future career goals in education leadership and management.

Modules are normally taught at early evening sessions. Full time students usually attend between three and four days a week. Part time students in full time employment usually take three years to complete the full MA and they normally attend one evening in the autumn semester and two in the spring/summer semester.

The programme provides opportunities to engage with current research covering a broad range of issues and recent thinking, and is informed by active research and scholarship in the development of educational leadership and management theory and practice. Content

You will study leadership and management in educational contexts from international perspectives to develop your knowledge, understanding and practice. Specifically, modules will cover aspects such as leading teaching and learning, developing staff and teams, organisational theory and strategy. These modules will take a people-focused approach, to understand the complexities of individuals and teams, and wider groups such as the staff, the organisation itself and beyond.

The programme enables you to specialise in particular areas of interest by giving a choice in your assignment and dissertation topics so your study has an immediate relevance and also prepares you for your future development as a practitioner and as a researcher. 

If you are currently in a senior management position, then a special route may be possible for you depending upon your experience and courses completed with organisations such as the National College for Teaching and Leadership.

A key aspect of the Education Leadership and Management MA is the undertaking of a piece of research. You will study the foundational skills and concepts in academic enquiry, and planning for your specialist research. Your research will be in the form of a dissertation, as a means of critically enquiring into and developing knowledge about an issue or question relevant to your study.
