The student, on registration, holds an introductory meeting with the primary supervisor and / or a research committee, where a customized and individualized programme of research investigation is balanced with supporting taught modules. These supported modules are identified from a suite of modules that make up the structured PhD programme in business, design or mediation. Annual progress reviews are part of the research masters programme in business, design or mediation and completion of requisite generic/transferable skills modules will be taken into account when assessing student progress. Students will not be permitted to submit their thesis (or equivalent) for examination without having accumulated the required amount of credits.

In addition to developing their own research topic with their supervisor(s), students’ will be required to take 10 credits worth of modules over the duration of their programme of doctoral research. 5 of these will be generic/transferable modules, and 5 in subject/specialist modules. The programme modules are being designed so as to mirror in terms of standard and complexity the syllabi of the CAP 1 examinations of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland. The programme covers Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics and a range of applied courses such as Labour Economics, International Trade, Economics of Sport and Finance.

The optional modules taken vary greatly, depending on the background and interest of the individual student. Students discuss which modules would be best for them with the course co-ordinator at the start of the year, and are helped to devise the optimal programme of study for themselves.

The emphasis is on ‘education’ with graduates encouraged to think for themselves and become proficient in problem solving.

Course Structure

The course is structured to be stimulating and challenging. It is designed to give graduates the necessary economic and quantitative skills that employers seek today. In the first semester, students take modules in the core areas of Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Econometrics and also a module in Research Methods. All modules are a mixture of theory and practical application. In the second semester, students specialise in finance and must take modules in Financial Economics, Financial Risk Analysis and Empirical Finance, as well as one field course. Field courses offered in any year may include International Finance, Market Microstructure, Advanced Derivatives and Corporate Finance. During the summer, students are required to undertake a three-month Work Placement, subject to availability. If students cannot secure a Work Placement then it will be replaced by a Research Thesis.

Overview

The LLM in International Business Law is a masters degree offered by Maynooth University Department of Law. The programme will enable law graduates to further their legal education by gaining a systematic understanding of the critical issues at the forefront of select areas of international business law. The programme also aims to develop legal research, reasoning, writing, advocacy, and teamwork skills, which are highly sought after by employers. Certain modules on the programme are run in partnership with leading law firms, offering students the opportunity to apply for work placements at the end of their studies.

Course Structure

Students complete a total of 90 ECTS over the course of this programme. The first semester (comprised entirely of mandatory modules) of this programme is taught in Lyon and students are required to be resident there. During the second semester in Maynooth, students choose from a range of optional modules. Students complete 30 taught credits in each semester. Students must complete a dissertation (30 ECTS) during the summer, which can be supervised by either University. Modules offered include World Trade Law, Foreign Investment Law, Public Procurement Law, Funds Law, and Aircraft Financing Law.
