Structure

There are four stages:

• Foundation,
• Application,
• Specialisation
• Business Project.

You will take six modules in each of the Foundation and Application stages; each module is compulsory and carries 10 credits. In the Specialisation stage you will take a further three 10-credit elective modules.

Subject to satisfactory completion of these stages you will progress to a 30-credit major project.

• Phase 1 - Foundation Stage (core) – September to December:

Designed to give you a strong grounding in the basics of business management, the Foundation stage introduces you to the core components that make organisations function.

You will understand the resources that an organisation requires, the processes that control organisational operations, and the approaches through which organisations relate to their international and external environments. It also develops the skills you will need to complete your MBA study successfully.

• Phase 2 - Application Stage (core) – January to March

The Application stage provides you with the opportunity to advance your thinking and knowledge by developing and applying the core themes studied in the Foundation stage.

This stage focuses on the strategic business context, the development of organisational human capital, the management of the marketing function and the analysis and control of financial and business operations.

Group Business Plan:

You will undertake a business plan that is group-based, giving you the opportunity to develop team working skills. You will work in an international, multicultural team where you will solve complex business problems, integrating the skills and knowledge gained in other modules.

Each member of the group takes on a formal leadership role for a period. The task requires groups to identify and plan the first five years of a start-up business. The group business plan will involve input from external business mentors, giving you the opportunity to test your ideas and to develop further understanding of the dynamics of businesses.

Judges in previous years have included senior managers from industry, leading professional firms and government agencies.

• Phase 3 - Specialisation Stage – April to June

Increasingly, MBA students want to focus their studies on specific areas of business and management.

In response, we offer different optional pathways: Accounting and Finance, General, Human Resource Management, and International Management, Marketing and Strategy, Operations Management and Logistics.

• Phase 4 - The Business Project – June to September

Replacing the traditional dissertation, the Business Project provides the opportunity to test the theories you have learnt in a practical environment. Knowledge from across the subjects studied in the Foundation and Application stages will be integrated within this project.

You will be supported by a member of faculty who will act as your internal project mentor throughout the duration of the project.

Our MSc in Social Science Research Methods aims to provide advanced training in research methods across the full range of the social sciences.

You will be provided with a thorough theoretical and practical knowledge of how to construct effective research studies, of the variety of data collection methods available to the social scientist and of the principal methods of analysing social scientific data. You will also be introduced to the political and ethical frameworks within which social science research is conducted, and to some of the ways in which the results of social science research are disseminated.

The course pathways have ESRC recognition and they each provide the appropriate training basis for proceeding to a PhD. These programmes provide extensive opportunities for interdisciplinary study, the application of social research expertise for occupational career development, and the pursuit of substantive areas of interest at postgraduate level.

The Management and Business Studies pathway

This pathway is suitable for two groups of people:

Central to this is the idea of the international HR manager who combines specialist technical knowledge with a strong understanding of the social, political and ethical context of business in a globalised world.

In this world, in addition to technical expertise in particular HR functions, managers need to understand national differences and how to manage in cross-cultural environments. They need to be aware of how to organise processes and projects across national boundaries. They need to be able to analyse the impact of different national institutional contexts on firm structures, innovation processes and work organisation. They need to be aware of the broader social and environmental consequences of their actions and the way in which national and international structures of soft and hard law impact on their policies and procedures. They need to be sensitive to changing social expectations of the responsibilities of firms and the way in which new internet based technologies make companies more visible and accountable to global social movements as well as more locally based coalitions of citizens and consumers. They need to be able to reflect on how to be an HR manager in such complex contexts, and to adapt creatively and effectively to challenges in a fast-moving environment.

If you encounter any problems which affect your studies, your personal tutor should always be your first point of contact; she/he will be able to put you in touch with the wide range of expert student support services provided by the University and the Students' Union as appropriate. Teaching

A wide range of teaching styles will be used to deliver the diverse material forming the curriculum of the programme, and you will be required to attend lectures and participate in examples classes.

A 10-credit module represents approximately 100 hours of study in total, which includes 24–36 hours of contact time with teaching staff. The remaining hours are intended to be for private study, coursework, revision and assessment. Therefore you are expected to spend a significant amount of time (typically 20 hours each week) studying independently.

At the dissertation stage, you will be allocated a supervisor in the relevant field of research whom you should expect to meet with regularly.

Learning Central, the Cardiff University virtual learning environment (VLE), will be used extensively to communicate, support lectures and provide general programme materials such as reading lists and module descriptions. It may also be used to provide self-testing assessment and give feedback.

Assessment

Achievement of learning outcomes in the classroom based modules is assessed by University examinations set in January and May/June. The balance between examination and coursework depends upon the modules selected, in addition to a triple module (30-credit) case study.

Award of an MSc requires successful completion of Stage 2, the Dissertation, with a mark of 50% or higher.

Candidates achieving a 70% average may be awarded a Distinction. Candidates achieving a 60% average may be awarded a Merit. Candidates failing to qualify for an MSc may be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma of Higher Education for 120 credits in Stage 1. Candidates failing to complete the 120 credits equired for Stage 1 may still be eligible for the award of a Postgraduate Certificate of Higher Education for the achievement of at least 60 credits.

Career prospects

Employment opportunities for students undertaking the proposed programme will be largely with national and international companies in the manufacturing engineering sector.

You may wish to use the MSc platform to go on to study for a PhD which can lead to an industrial or academic career.
