This consultancy project, lasting up to three months over the summer, involves you in either supporting a start-up company, finding growth opportunities for a medium-sized firm, or improving the effectiveness and efficiency of a function within a large, blue chip company.

Projects are sourced from a range of industries and sectors based in Manchester and the North West region. These can be SME's to large corporations. You'll also receive additional application and interview support from the School's Careers Service.

Coursework and assessment

Assessment varies depending on the modules chosen. It may include a combination of coursework, group project assessment, presentations, assignments, report, individual essay and examinations.

The summer project is offered if you do not have any unit marks below 40%, and not more than one unit mark between 40-49% in semester 1. If you don't meet these criteria you will be offered a project related to an external client, with no direct contact with them. For those working on group projects, a group report and an individual report will be produced (both 6,000 words).

Alternatively, you may undertake an academic dissertation of 12,000 words.

Course unit details

During the course you will be taking 180 credits in all. The eight taught modules during semester one and two total 120 credits and consists of both compulsory and optional taught units which can be viewed in the list below.  

The compulsory units are built around the problems of strategic management, the operation of multinational enterprises, comparative business analysis and the skills necessary to work efficiently in a international business environment. The optional courses allow you to specialise in particular aspects of strategic management and business analysis.

During the summer period, you will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills learnt during the first two semesters, enhance your skills while working with a major real life client and work as part of a team. The result of this project is presented as a research report/dissertation. This part of the course is closely related to the Manchester Method that enables you to experience experiential learning and helps you to become a reflective practitioner or manager.

Examples of recent projects include:

  • Exploring the strategic expansion of the volunteer tourism industry into the academic market
  • An in-depth analysis of the wholesale market and changing trends towards online shopping
  • Strategic positioning in relation to the offshore wind turbine market in northern Europe
  • Identification of venture capitalist acquisition targets in the UK software industry

Projects are sourced from a range of small, medium and large businesses, across a wide range of sectors in Manchester and the UK's North West region.

The project is offered if you gain a minimum of 50% in each first semester course unit. If not, you will be offered a project related to an external client, with no direct contact with the client. For those working on group projects, a group report and an individual report will be produced (both 6,000 words).

Alternatively, you may undertake an academic dissertation of 12,000 words. Your supervisor will help you to define the research and advise, guide and support you throughout.

The Master of Research in Management  is awarded in recognition of the successful completion of an approved programme of training and research. Students will pursue a programme of training and research which combines advanced study, research methodology and a substantial research project, or series of research projects.

It is a one year Master's degree which is designed to give students the opportunity to both develop their knowledge of specialist areas of business and management and develop the research skills essential for doctoral research. Many students who complete an MRes go on to apply to study a PhD.

Aims

The programme aims to:

  • provide students with a rigorous training in research methods, including epistemological and theoretical issues as well as quantitative and qualitative methods, appropriate for their doctoral studies;
  • give students the flexibility to chose from a range of course options in the area of management research within a structured programme of courses;
  • offer a range of qualitative and quantitative methods course units so that students could chose the level and specialism that is appropriate to their background and current research training needs;
  • provide systematic and critical knowledge of one specific subject area of management research (such as accounting or marketing) so they appreciate current debates and issues;
  • introduce students to different paradigms to management research/studies thus equipping them with the general background to become professional researchers in management;
  • produce students who have the knowledge and skills to appreciate the growing importance of interdisciplinary research in management;
  • foster students' skills in analysis, argument, independent thinking, and effective oral and written self-expression and presentation skills;
  • build transferable employment related skills, so that students can become life-long learners able to apply their knowledge and skills in variety of contexts;
  • encourage initiative, independent learning and commitment to scholarship; and
  • develop core skills IT in computer literacy, numeracy, and use of databases.

Special features

The MRes programme is designed to meet the research training needs of students who intend to continue their postgraduate studies and complete a PhD but either do not have any postgraduate experience or have postgraduate degrees that are deemed to provide insufficient research training. We can envisage however that other types of students (students who wish to pursue a career as researchers in B&M consultancies, for example) might be interested in completing the MRes. Apart from providing an orientation to Doctoral research the MRes programme equips students with a range of generic and subject specific research skills and knowledge. It also develops students personal and career development skills and a number of transferable skills.

The Information management pathway addresses both the technical challenges of information capture and usage from big data, and the need for its effective and efficient management and analysis within business, scientific, educational, entertainment and organisational contexts. This MSc pathway will examine the entire information management life cycle, including data strategy, management, design and warehousing, data analytics and information governance. In addition to the need to work with huge volumes of data, the pathway will also address multi-modality, including un- and semi-structured data, image and video data, spatial and temporal data, etc.

The pathway consists of two (compulsory) units from the Data Engineering and IT governance ACS theme, three additional compulsory units on various aspects of information management, and one optional unit covering various application areas (such as decision support, text mining, optimisation).

The pathway is taught in collaboration with Manchester Business School (MBS). As such, the programme benefits from the offerings of both schools. MBS is the largest campus-based business and management school in the UK offering world-leading business education informed by leading edge theory and practice. Similarly, the School of Computer Science is renowned as a world-class centre of excellence in computing teaching and research.

IBM has announced that Prof. John Keane from the School of Computer Science at The University of Manchester is one of the winners of its2013 Big Data and Analytics Faculty Awards. He joins 13 other researchers from around the world who will bring together their innovative research for the benefit of curricular development. The award will support technical case studies investigating the design and implementation of big data problems to enhance the postgraduate module in Data Engineering which is central to the Information Management pathway of the Advanced Computer Science and IT management MSc at Manchester.

The (full time version of the) course lasts 12 months, and starts in September. The students take the following core course units:

CIPS accreditation

On completion of the MSc Operations, Project and Supply Chain Management course, students with three years' work experience in a relevant field of supply chain management can apply to become full members of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS).

  • As the course is accredited to CIPS, students with the required work experience will not need to take any further examinations to become full members of CIPS (as long as they have completed the required modules and the dissertation should focus on a procurement and supply related theme as part of the MSc).
  • Students without the required work experience (for example, recent graduates) can take the required modules and dissertation element of the MSc programme and on completion of three years relevant work experience can apply for full membership of CIPS.

Managers are agents of change, innovators and social and business entrepreneurs. Managers are critical, challenging, independent and creative thinkers. Managers have impact on their environment. The course will enable you to develop the necessary skills to foster different ways of thinking, different ways of viewing and understanding organisations.

  • Starting with a pre-course workshop in September to give you an intensive induction, then through lectures, case studies, seminars and group project-based work during the core modules, you'll be challenging established models of thinking, critically reflecting on contemporary management and looking at alternative ways of organising.
  • Sustainability, innovation and social responsibility will be key themes during the course alongside skill-building in key areas such as marketing, accounting and human resource management.

MSc Management and Information Systems: Change and Development aims to train 'hybrid managers' capable of understanding both the job of management in its organisational setting, and the role, management and jargon of information, information systems and information technology.

The course intends to help close the gap of knowledge, skills, culture and language that exists between functional managers and information systems professionals - a gap that results in the majority of information systems, including e-government, e-commerce, and e-development systems, under-performing or becoming failures.

You'll therefore graduate in a strong position to lead the successful development and implementation of new information systems in a wide range of organisations. By the course's end, you will have been provided with:

  • conceptual frameworks to understand the role of management of information, of information technology and of information systems in organisations
  • new knowledge and skills to help in the effective planning, development implementation and management of information systems
  • new knowledge and skills to help in the effective management and change of organisations.

Special features

An overseas field visit is an integral part of the programme. The cost of the visit is included in the programme fee. In addition, participants may undertake research visits to organisations applying information systems in practice in the UK. Field courses may be scheduled at any point during the twelve-month period of the degree programme and this may include during University vacations. Successful applicants are expected to be available to attend.

Countries to be visited may change their immigration and visa regulations at short notice. The Global Development Institute (GDI) cannot guarantee that where visas are required for the field course, they will be granted. GDI will ensure that, in the unlikely event this occurs, affected students are not academically disadvantaged.

Teaching and learning

Part-time students complete the full-time programme over 24 months.  There are NO evening or weekend course units available on the part-time programme, therefore if you are considering taking a programme on a part-time basis, you should discuss the requirements with the Programme Director first and seek approval from your employer to have the relevant time off. Timetabling information is normally available from late August from the Programme Administrator and you will have the opportunity to discuss course unit choices during induction week with the Programme Director.

Coursework and assessment

The taught elements of the programme, carrying 120 credits overall is continuously assessed by a variety of methods (project based reports, essays), involving largely individual submissions, but also elements of group work.

Participants must also complete a 12,000-15,000 word dissertation on a topic of their choice approved by the Programme Directors. Students are encouraged to base their dissertations on topics of direct professional concern to themselves.

More than two-thirds of your time will be spent in our partnership schools and colleges, where you will develop practical teaching skills with the support of trained mentors and established teachers. Your University tutors will provide excellent support for your academic work and personal needs, whilst school/college mentors will provide advice and guidance whilst you are on placement. The culture of team working and best practice sharing amongst students provides you with a support network available when you need it the most. Across the academic year, individual tutorials can be used to raise any personal and professional needs or concerns.

Teaching and learning

The structure of our PGCEs includes both school-based and University-based learning. On our secondary PGCEs, around two thirds of your time will be spent in secondary schools, academies or colleges on placements. You will also need to undertake self-directed study in the evenings and weekends, such as background reading, creating lesson plans and completing written assignments.

The course is a partnership between the University and its partner schools and colleges which are drawn from a wide area, including Bolton, Bury, Cheshire, Deeside, Lancashire, Manchester, Merseyside, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Staffordshire, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, Warrington and Wigan. Each placement school or college has a designated business education mentor who has been trained by the University.

The usual placement pattern is a main school experience, followed by a contrasting placement, before returning to the main school/college in the final weeks of the course. As a trainee in a placement school or college you will observe and teach classes under the guidance of experienced subject mentors.

You will be given a significant amount of responsibility to develop your own teaching style, to set personal targets, to demonstrate initiative and to evaluate your work in planning, teaching and assessing. You will participate actively in your own professional development as a teacher through seminars, lectures, group discussion, practical workshops, reflection, trainee-led sessions, peer review and tutorials.

Coursework and assessment

School and University-based experiences are formally assessed and your school/college mentors and University tutors will help you to record your achievements and to set targets.

During each placement, a University tutor will observe your teaching and at the end of each placement you will receive a report from your mentor. The report will grade you in the following areas: teaching; planning, differentiation and assessment; learning environment; and wider professional responsibilities. The grades are awarded by your mentor in conjunction your University tutor. These reports, together with your record of achievement and development, facilitate your progression as a trainee teacher.

You are also required to complete a number of written assignments which allow you to gain 60 master's level credits. Modules include: Teaching, Learning and Assessment, a School/College-based Enquiry (with supporting literature review), and a Reflection of Professional Practice. On-going guidance and support to complete these assignments will be available from your University tutors.

Home/EU students may be eligible for a repayable tuition fee loan. Home students in England may also be eligible for a repayable student maintenance loan. At the same time it offers a solid theoretical grounding, exploring cultural policy in its historical context and encouraging critical engagement with the philosophical, political, social and economic imperatives informing contemporary practice. Lecturers from the Centre for Arts Management teach the MA with considerable input from arts professionals including staff from the Martin Harris Centre, Contact Theatre, the Royal Exchange, Whitworth Art Gallery and many other local cultural organisations. There are a number of course units common to the MSc Real Estate Asset Management and MSc Real Estate Development that provide a sound grounding in real estate from the perspectives of investor, developer, occupier and the broader society. An overseas field visit is an optional part of the programme if students choose to undertake the relevant optional course unit: International Planning (Field Visit). The cost of the visit is partly covered by the course fee but there is a student contribution towards the cost of the trip, depending on the venue. The increasing globalisation of the economy and pan-national employment legislation also means the ability to compare processes and practices across continents is a sought-after skill.

CIPD Course recognition

This course is approved to the new equivalent advanced level postgraduate standard and you can enhance your studies by taking additional CIPD components that prepare you for CIPD membership. If you decide to do so, you can attend a series of skills workshops, hear from guest speakers, and complete a range of activities enabling you to develop practical HR skills.

You will join CIPD as a student member and on passing all of the modules of the Masters degree (including the dissertation) and the CIPD components, your CIPD membership will be automatically updated to Associate Member. Once you have applied your knowledge in the workplace, you can apply for Chartered membership.

Please note: There is a £450 administrative fee payable to Alliance Manchester Business School on arrival if you choose to register with the CIPD, plus you join the CIPD for two years - the year of your course, and the year of graduation. Visit the CIPD website  for further information.

Teaching and learning

Assessment across the course units varies on the modules chose. It includes a combination of examinations, individual essay, course work, assignment and group project and presentation assessment. A dissertation of between 12,000 and 15,000 words is undertaken during the final semester over the summer.

Course unit details

During the course you will be taking 180 credits in all. The eight taught modules during semester one and two total 120 credits and consists of both compulsory and optional taught units which can be viewed in the list below.  Please note that certain modules have to be taken to achieve CIPD recognition

Over the summer period, you will carry out your Research Dissertation, worth 60 credits. Examples of recent dissertation project topics include:

  • Work-life balance: perspectives of female teachers from the UK and India
  • Demographic change in Germany and Japan and the implications for the labour market
  • A comparative study of gender discrimination at work in the UK and China
  • The impact of support practices on expatriate adjustment in a Russian multinational corporation
  • Coping mechanisms of Nigerian women balancing motherhood and managerial roles
