Employment opportunities

In academic learning we often refer to knowledge or understanding something new. Whilst this is a key part of the MBA, it is not the entirety. We refer to skills which, when applied in context, become valuable competencies. It is a combination of what you know - the knowledge, and what you can do - the competencies, that are ultimately key in determining your employability.

For example, can you:
-Take an aerial view of business operations and assess the strategic rather than tactical implications of market dynamics and leadership decisions as they impact business performance?
-Understand the subtlety that exists within business organisations, and not just the structure but also how networks, both formal and informal, operate?
-Understand how organisation cultures impact, evolve and, critically, sometimes resist?
-Operate under pressure without all the information to hand and in situations where you have to make decisions which might have far reaching consequences?
-Take a customer perspective, so that you provide the customer (both internal and external) with what is required, even when you have to manage unrealistic expectations?

Finally:
-Do you have a career plan? Having ambition and the ability to plan achievement of your ambition is a key management and leadership competency.

The MSc Islamic Finance programme provides you with an opportunity to study the success of Islamic finance, particularly in the current economic climate, to evaluate its principles and understand its unique approach to finance for today’s businesses and society.

Europe, USA and many other parts of the world have been in deep recession since 2008. This recession is mainly caused by the collapse of the conventional banking and finance model operated in most parts of the world.

The Islamic finance and banking industry has been growing at annual rates of 15-20% over the last decade and is expected to continue in the foreseeable future. Islamic finance and banking has demonstrated itself to be a serious contender to replace much of the conventional banking and finance industry around the world. At the end of 2011 the global Islamic finance services industry was valued at USD 1.4 trillion. The supply of qualified professionals to take up careers in this industry falls way short of demand.

The success of the Islamic finance is mainly due to a sound theoretical foundation based on the following principles:
-Rigorous ethical principles
-Interest-free banking
-A system based on real asset and real business transactions NOT on high speculation and high risk activities

Course content

This programme provides you with a solid foundation in Islamic Finance and prepares you for the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) Diploma in Islamic Finance. The first part covers the core discipline of accounting and finance. The second part focuses on Islamic Finance.

-Compulsory Modules
-Financial Reporting and Analysis
-Management Control and Internal Audit
-Advanced Corporate Finance
-Business Management Research
-Islamic Investment and Financing
-Islamic Commercial Law (Shari'ah)
-International Finance

Course content

After a one week Induction Programme, you will be in school on serial and block placements to gain a supported understanding of the role of the teacher. Within a school, you will receive expert support from a subject or class mentor who will hold weekly meetings with you to help you to prepare, teach and review lessons and develop your subject knowledge.

Each school or college will have a professional mentor who will help you to understand the organisation of the school, pastoral care systems and the legal and social framework of school including supporting services.

Associate Teachers have a phased introduction to teaching that will reflect your personal needs. Initially you will observe the regular teacher, help with group work and then move towards sharing classes with the teacher before eventually taking classes yourself. As well as teaching your subject, you will be required to contribute generally to the life of the school.

The university element of the course is designed to engage Associate Teachers in critical reflection on the nature of education. We also aim to develop your knowledge of Economics and Business Studies. Group and individual tutorials in the university will give you an opportunity to discuss your ideas and the challenges you may face.

The university aspects of the course take place on the Stoke campus and will draw upon the experience of practicing teachers as well as highly experienced tutors. The school experience is based in local, carefully selected partnership schools.

The blend of practical experience and university study will be evidenced by the compilation of portfolios and the production of short written academic papers.

Graduate destinations

On completing your Teacher Training course (PGCE) and starting your first teaching job, you can join our Masters course in Education and be in a position of completing your Masters in Education by the end of your second year of teaching.

The specific focus of the MSc Economics for Business Analysis is the analysis of business from the viewpoint of the discipline of economics. In particular, economics analysis is applied to fundamental issues related to the behaviour and performance of modern business organisations. However, in the process of studying the theoretical concepts and empirical methods necessary for research activity in this area, students also appreciate the research process applicable to most areas of economics.

Course content

There are eight taught modules followed by a dissertation in a related area of your choice. Macroeconomic Analysis provides the background against which any analyses of business must take place.

In Economic Analysis of the Firm 1 and 2 the essential nature of the firm and its relationship to other firms is considered using modern economic theory and actual cases. Personnel Economics concerns the contractual relationships between the company and its employees.

Econometrics 1 and 2 and Business Finance and Financial Reporting Analysis provide students with the ability to assemble, analyse and interpret data and published work in the area.

Employment opportunities

The programme aims to give a basis for a career as a business analyst in a financial, industrial or government organisation. Many of our postgraduate students are developing high ranking careers in government, international organisations, business and universities. For instance, in the last four years we have had students who are now employed as university lecturers, in banks and multinational companies. Many have also gone on to register for PhDs.
