Programme structure

The programme has a duration of 2 years and consists of 4 semesters.

1st semester: Prerequisite courses

The first semester consists of 4 courses. The students will be provided with knowledge regarding the social characteristics of buyer-supplier relationships in a course called Buyer-Supplier Relationships and Networks. This will allow them to manage these types of relationships for improved value creation.

The course in Marketing Theory enables students to udnerstand developments and perspectives within the marketing discipline, and to identify marketing concepts and theories releavnt for the nalysis and solution of marketing problems at hand.

The role of suppliers and customers in the innovation and product development activities of firms will be addressed in Innovation in Buyer-Supplier Relationships course.

Finally, the semester covers knowledge of research methods, both qualitative and quantitative. This will be introduced in a Business-to-Business Research Methods course. The students will gain knowledge about choices of research questions, selection of data, analysis of data and reporting data.

2nd semester: Specialisation courses

In the second semester students will follow 4 specialisation courses.

The first course in Business-to-Business Purchasing Management will take the students through how tasks such as: buying goods/services and knowledge from a global portfolio of suppliers are managed. The course includes developing a purchasing strategy, selecting the right suppliers, evaluating and developing suppliers performance and value creation, and coordinating and organizing the purchasing task internally in the buying company.

The course in Business-to-Business Sales and Marketing Strategy is focusing on classic and modern literature on customer value generation in a strategic, tactical and operational sales/marketing perspective

Students will be introduced to the firm's pricing problems in Pricing Strategy course, which will also provide them with practical techniques to understanding price setting in context of the firm's customers, costs and competition.

Lastly, the semester finishes with Regulating Marketing and Purchasing Cooperation course, which focuses on the most important regulatory areas covering the cooperation between private enterprises on marketing and purchasing. The main focus will be on agreements restricting competition (competition law), including rules on agreements between competitors as well as non-competitors.

3rd semester: Electives or study abroad

In the third semester, you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. The courses can be taken either at Aarhus BSS during the semester, at the AU Summer University or at one of our more than 300 partner universities abroad. You can also participate in internship programmes either in Denmark or abroad.

4th semester: Final thesis

During your first semester you follow the prerequisite courses that form the methodological and academic basis for the further study programme.

The course Business Analytics gives the student a set of tools and models that are essential for the design and evaluation of empirical investigations that can support decisions in the business intelligence area. Moreover, the course will cover major research tools including research design, experiments,response models and forecasting.

IS Development & Implementation in a Business Context introduces a range of methods and techniques that can be used to understand, plan and execute the processes in which information systems are developed, implemented, evaluated and modified to enable the student to participate in the development, acquisition and implementation of information systems.

Data Warehousing provides the student with knowledge about the wide variety of database management systems available for a data warehouse solution and how to choose a solution that is relevant for the business intelligence project in question.

SAS and SQL for Business Analytics provides the student with skills to conduct proper data analysis using some of the most flexible environments available. Focus will be on data management and data manipulation with the purpose to prepare for a statistical analysis.

2nd semester: Specialisation courses

During the second semester you follow the specialisation courses of the programme.

Data Mining for Business Decisions teaches students how to work with large data-sets and how relationships in such data can be detected with the purpose to transform data into knowledge. Business applications cover a broad range from marketing to accounting, logistics and supply chain management.

In Advanced Market Research the focus is on analytical customer relationship management. The course is devoted to customer base analysis and predictive modelling with a primary focus on customer lifetime value and customer retention.

Supply Chain Management aims to provide an introduction and a framework of the design and operations of performance management in contemporary supply chains.

Project Management aims to introduce the contents of general project management competences and provide the students with skills to manage a BI project.

The first semester of the Master programme in Management Accounting and Control consists of 5 courses.

Three prespectives will be introduced to the students in the Foundation of Management Accounting Research course – positivistic, interpretive, and critical – and their underlying assumptions concerning the generation of scientific knowledge and its impact on our lives

Cost Management: Theories, Models and Technologies aims at providing the students with knowledge about Danish and international cost management traditions, in order to create a thorough conceptual understanding of the fundamental techniques in cost accounting.

Extracting relevant data and performing valid quantitative analysis will be taught in Advanced Excel.

Strategic and Organizational Concepts for Management Control focuses on giving the students a solid foundation of knowledge of the different strategic schools and organisational concepts that form contemporary management control.

Lastly, Planning and Budgeting is closely linked to performance measurements and it contributes to a specific focus on the organisations strategic goals.

2nd semester: Specialisation courses

The second semester focuses on 5 specialised courses.

The course in Accounting Information Systems gives the students an outline of the different types of administrative programmers, their designs, application, implementation and security.

Various approaches and principles of performance management and how these will cohere with different types of organisations and organisational activity operating in various business environments will be taught in the Performance Management course. Emphasis will not only be on the appropriate choice of tools and approach for the specific context, but also on the business reality they create, i.e. their impact on human and social behaviour, and hence their strategic implications.

International Financial Accounting I and International Financial Accounting II focuses on developing an understanding of the importance of the quality of accounting information for decision making.

Following the course “Foundations of Management Accounting Research” from the first semester, Practice Project in Management Accounting is a practical application of the prerequsisite course. The goal of the course is to enable students to plan, investigate and compose a group-report on a management accounting problem in practice, and to reflect on their findings as a group in an expert conversation. Proficiency of these capabilities matters for both project-related work in a professional career as well as for writing a stringent Master's thesis.

Courses:

Applied Econometric Methods introduces you to the most widely used quantitative and empirical methods in econometrics, including in particular financial econometrics. The course has two major aims. Firstly, it provides you with tools which enable you to acquire the knowledge published in high quality publications within the areas of empirical finance and economics. Secondly, it equips you with tools for modelling and estimating econometric systems. The methods involved have been chosen with a view towards applications within empirical finance and economics.

Corporate Finance deals with the financial problems of a company and various solution models will be introduced. Further issues are the interactions between the company and the financial markets, with special emphasis on valuation of the company in a capital market perspective.

International Business Methods covers macro level (regional economic integration, e.g. the EU, trade barriers, etc.), company level (internationalisation and export market strategies, management of subsidiary companies, etc.) and individual level interaction between people of different professional and cultural backgrounds.

Internationalisation of the Firm provides you with an in-depth and detailed understanding of theories surrounding the internationalisation of businesses and the practical implications of these theories.

2nd semester: Specialisation courses

The second semester is devoted to more advanced studies within the two areas.

Courses:

International Financial Accounting focuses on the financial reporting requirements in international environments. An understanding of international business depends on a theoretically grounded, pragmatic knowledge of the international requirements for corporations to report their financial performance and financial position.

Strategy and Management Accounting is a course with different elements of strategy formulation and strategic management accounting will be discussed and analysed. An important element involves the provision of information for the formulation of an organisations' strategy and managing strategy implementation and its importance for management accounting.

Advanced Corporate Finance studies corporate finance under asymmetric information and agency problems. Traditional agency theory and asymmetric information are used to revisit capital structure, dividend and capital budgeting policies. Focus is also on the role of governance systems under different ownership structures.

International Business Finance will introduce you to the multinational firm is confronted with the task of operating internationally. This necessitates an understanding of the markets for products, factors of production, and financial assets. Operating internationally poses unique risks – one of these being the existence of fluctuating exchange rates. More generally, the global integration of money and capital markets implies opportunities as wells as challenges – both of which have to be considered by the multinational firm.

The course Organizing and Managing the Multinational Corporation provides students with an understanding of how multinational corporations are organized and managed, and how the MNC can develop different management practices and organizational capabilities dependent on specific contingencies and circumstances.

In the course Intercultural Competences the student will achieve understanding of how to deal with cultural differences, the role of culture as frameworks for individual and collective actions, and the interplay between cultural structures and individual behavior and train the ability to identify challenges faced by international managers, synthesize the insights gained from the various theoretical fields, and challenge and critically evaluate both functionalist and constructivist, theories and concepts of culture and management. 

The course Human Resource Management and Development gives students a fundamental theoretical and practical insight into and understanding of the Human Resource Management (HRM) field – the dynamic interplay of person, job, and organisation.

Finally the course B2B Purchasing Management will teach students how to develop and manage the global purchasing function of an organization. This includes understanding how social buyer-supplier relationships are established, developed, and managed.

A key point of this programme is the interaction with study relevant companies. Students are invited to identify companies and assignments of relevance to use in technology specialisations and further in thier master thesis. 1st semester: Courses

The structure of the first semester consists of 4 courses.

Skills in developing strategies and approaches that enhance an organisation’s ability to search, select, execute and capture benefits consisting of knowledge about technological opportunities and long-term trends are taught in a Management of Technology course.

The aim of the course in Organisational Design and Human Resource Analytics is to give the student a profound understanding of how they should organise and manage to enhance performance. These skills are particularly important for students who will be managing teams or become middle managers soon after graduation. The course will be structured into two parts, covering organisation design theory and applications from personnel economics.

Student's systematic problem-based projects will be supported in Research Design in Engineering course. Key concepts for engineering research will be presented, in order to enable the students to carry out credible and reliable interventions with technology and investigations of technology in enterprises.

Finally the first semester also introduces the course inTechnology Specialisation 1. Students will train to learn and perform scientifically grounded work on the choice of a technological solution through systematic motivation, identification, combination, development and selection of technical artefacts and solutions.

2nd semester: Courses

The second semester of this Master's programme contains 3 courses.

The first course inTechnological Business Model Innovation will focus on students knowledge of new support tools and technologies for business models and business model innovation.

The fields of engineering, technology, innovation and business development will be discussed in the course in Optimisation of Engineering Processes using Numerical Approaches. The overall aim of the course is to enable the students to solve an engineering problem using the following four-step process: 1) Analyse a given problem, 2) Setting up a formal model that describes the problem, 3) Analyse the formal model of the problem and solve it and 4) Translate the formal solution into a solution to problem.

The third course the students will follow is Technology Specialisation 2. This course adds on knowledge from the Technology Spesialisation 1 course in the first semester. The student will be trained to learn and perform scientifically grounded work in one or more technological areas within product/service, production and process technology different from what was submitted in the TS1 project.

3rd semester: Elective courses

The third semester gives the students the possibility of choosing electives based on their personal interest. Electives courses in the past years contain: Energy Engineering and Innovation, Advanced Product Development, Engineering Project Management, Entrepreneurship, Engineering Modelling, Enterprise Architecture Practices, Digital Capabilities, Six Sigma Design and Innovation, Introduction to Persuasive Technology and Further project-based activities in company or technology.

The student will be allowed to choose courses worth of 30ECTS in total.

4th semester: Final thesis

The fourth semester is devoted to the master's thesis. You may choose the topic of the thesis freely and get a chance to concentrate on and specialise in a specific field of interest.

In the first semester the students will get an advanced insight into the theories of social sciences that are crucial for the understanding, definition and solution of marketing problems. This semester consists of 4 courses.

The Marketing Research course gives the student a set of tools and models that are essential for the design and evaluation of empirical studies that can support decisions in the marketing policy areas. The course will cover major research tasks and methods including the construction of questionnaires, scale development, observational methods, response models and choice models.

The second theoratical course in Marketing Theory enables students to understand developments and perspectives within the marketing discipline, and to identify marketing concepts and theories relevant for the analysis and solution of marketing problems at hand. Also, the course relates to ethical issues and to the interests of different stakeholders.

The Customer Value and Innovation course provides students with an in-depth understanding of the challenges, mechanisms and approaches for facilitating value creation and innovation activities. This includes the strategies, structures, processes, and the kind of culture that enhances the ability of firms to develop innovative value propositions and facilitate customers’ value creation processes.

To cover the fundamentals of human behaviour in economic contexts, from a social cognition perspective as well as from a judgment and decision-making perspective a course in Economic Psychology will be taught. This course applies fundamental theories and methods to key areas in marketing, including consumer and industrial buyer behaviour, marketing management, pricing, communication, innovation, and relationship marketing.

2nd semester: Specialisation courses

The second semester comprises the following four compulsory specialisation courses.

The role of communication, and how the integration of several communication tools may support the achievement of the overall goal of the firm’s communication strategy will be covered in a course named Marketing Communication.

Pricing Strategy course provides the student with an introduction to the firm’s pricing problem and provides practical techniques in terms of understanding price setting in the context of the firm’s customers, costs and competition. 

The Marketing Channels and Brand Relationships course enables students to analyse and evaluate a company’s position from a marketing channel and network perspective, and to build brand relationships in different types of markets.

Lastly, the semester ends by focusing on marketing management from a strategic perspective, combining and linking all policy areas to decision-making at top management level with the course in Marketing Management and Strategy.

The students will be introduced to various theories and models within the fields of organisational sociology and personality psychology in the course Organisational Theory: Structure and Behaviour. The expedient approach to creating an understanding of organisations as both structure and behaviour, will be further discussed based on the theories and models.

The course in Emerging markets, their institutions and challenges focuses on the importance and growth potentials of emerging markets, such as for example the Chinese, mean that they cannot be ignored, but their particularities at the same time pose serious liabilities of foreignness for Western firms. For students to overcome these liabilities. The students must start with an understanding of the institutional differences between the emerging markets and the economies of the West.

The third course in the first semester is Management Research Method. Emphasis will be put on the production of qualified and justified knowledge which lives up to scientific quality criteria. The student will be introduced to a variety of research designs applicable when carrying out research in the area of organisation and management and related areas.

2nd semester: Specialisation courses

The second semester provides the students with 4 specialisation courses.

The students will approach organizational change and leadership from a broad perspective, and traditional planned change models in a course: Organizational Change and Leadership. The course will also include clarification of perspectives on leadership, especially on the relationship between the concepts of management and leadership, and the central topics are the discussions of task-oriented and people-oriented leadership behaviour in various contexts at various levels.

The ability to apply central strategic tools for diagnostic purposes and subsequent business development will be trained in Strategy and Business Development. This will be done in connection with the resolution of managerial aspects of development issues at a strategic level.

Entrepreneurship course enables the students to understand the factors affecting the formation and growth of enterprises. They will learn to analyse alternative organisational options and managerial challanges.

Lastly, the students will participate in a Human Resource Management and Development course, which will provide them with the fundamental theoretical and practical insights into understanding the Human Resource Management field. Topics such HRM issues, international HRM, and dilemmas within the field will be discussed.

Finance and other advanced research areas are based on statistical and mathematical models. Therefore it is an advantage for students to be familiar with these areas before the programme begins. PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

1st semester: Prerequisite courses

The first semester you will follow three prerequisite courses that form the methodological and academic basis for the further study programme. Below you will find some details about the courses.

In Corporate Finance I the general aim of the course to provide the participants with profound knowledge about financial decision making in corporations. It is important to underline that although the course is focused on the managerial problems, decisions must be based on a solid theoretical framework.

You will get more in-depth knowledge in the following course, Corporate Finance II, which aims to extend the knowledge about financial decision making in corporations provided by the preceding course, Corporate Finance I, with a special focus on real options and risk management.

Moreover you will be taught Portfolio Theory and Investment Analysis, which focuses on theories and empirical methods for analysing equity markets.

Another course is Fixed Income Securities, which focuses on theories and methods for analysing fixed income markets.

Finally you will be introduced to Applied Econometric Methods I and Applied Econometric Methods II. The purpose of the fist of the two mentioned courses is to introduce the students to the most widely used quantitative and empirical methods in econometrics, including in particular financial econometrics. In Applied Econometric Methods II the course extends the time series analysis from Applied Econometrics Methods I with special emphasis on relevant financial models and applications. For forecast purposes, models of financial time series and econometrics will obviously be of major relevance.

2nd semester: Specialisation courses

On the second semester the student will be provided with an insight to the different perspectives on finance in the different courses.

Among these are Bank Management focuses on the financial system and the role of banks in the capital market. Also the financial regulation of markets and institutions is integrated into the course. The main aim of the course is to provide students with insight into the management tasks that banks and mortgage credit institutions face.

Moreover, the students will be introduced to Securities Market covers the parts of the financial curriculum that are related to trading in markets for financial instruments. As such it complements the standard courses in asset pricing, corporate finance, bank management and financial institutions with issues from the field of market microstructure.

Another perspective is that of Financial Engineering. This course illuminates the financial derivatives such as forward, futures, swaps, and options are increasingly important instruments applied by agents of financial markets. The course focuses on describing and understanding these instruments, and on the underlying markets such as money markets, bond markets, stock, currency, and commodity markets.

During the 2nd semester the student will also get knowledge about Financial economics, which is nowadays quite often based on empirical investigation. This course provides you with many different methods to analyse financial data. Among the many models are event studies, models to analyse the term structure of interest rates as well as ARCH and GARCH models.

The course Introductory Methods in Economic Consulting introduces widely applicable quantitative methods with a special focus on their relevance for policy analysis. The main aim of the course is to introduce and apply relatively simple methods and models that can be used for econometric analysis of empirical questions that inevitably arise when project evaluations are performed.

Another course is Advanced Methods in Economic Consulting, which comprises analysis and assessment of the economic consequences also involves estimation of the costs and benefits. Hence, a thorough knowledge of advanced applied econometric methods is necessary to solve many of the complicated economic consulting problems.

The course Advanced Industrial Economics is concerned with the theoretical and empirical understanding of the intensity of competition across industries and its effect on prices, quantities, quality choice, efficiency and market structure. It also studies the need of public intervention by describing the economics of competition policy.

The student will also follow the course Organisational Economics and Strategy, which studies how firms create a competitive advantage and maintain it, and analyses strategic choices regarding the boundaries of the firm, the incentive mechanisms and the organisational structure that will best serve their strategies.

Finally the student will follow the course Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) or Project Evaluation as it is sometimes referred to, is an essential tool in economic consulting. The purpose of CBA is to facilitate better decision-making. It ensures that resources are effectively allocated by estimating the monetary values - as far as this is possible - of all the benefits and costs to society of alternative projects, typically public investment projects.

2nd semester: Specialisation courses

The course International Economic Integration gives a broad understanding of the forces and effects of globalisation through technological and policy changes. Based on the theory of international economics we examine integration as driven by organisations like e.g. the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the EU.

Another course that you'll be introduced to is Developing and Emerging Economies. The course will focus on the opportunities and conditions for economic growth in developing and emerging economies and provide you with an understanding of the underlying economic mechanisms.

Alongside you will also follow the course Applied Economic Consulting. This course simulates the entire process surrounding a real-world economic consulting problem, including an introduction to various project management tools.

The two-year International Master of Science in Quantitative Economics (IMSQE) MSc programme is an elite fulltime MSc programme at the Department of Economics and Business, Aarhus BSS. Students tailor their own study programme on the basis of a range of advance-level courses with a quantitative orientation and selected PhD-level courses. The programme requires strong analytical skills in quantitative methods and there are special requirements regarding the level an qualitative contents of written assignments.

Learning objectives

The IMSQE programme provides its students with a number of outstanding qualifications. They will acquire analytical skills at a very high level, and they will thus be able to apply the methods that they have learned to new cases, to formulate new theories, to formulate and test hypotheses, and to reflect upon the validity and relevance of various scientific methods and substantive theories within the field. This implies that the students will be able to go well beyond reproduction of known material, and working independently on new topics within the area will be a core competence of the elite students.

Aims

The purpose of the IMSQE programme is to provide candidates with advanced-level training within the analytical, quantitative disciplines of macroeconomics, microeconomics, economics, econometrics, finance and accounting. The IMSQE programme aims at recruiting candidates within quantitative economics and management internationally in competition with leading institutions such as London School of Economics, Oxford University and Cambridge University.

Candidates completing the IMSQE programme will acquire analytical skills at a very high level which are in increasing demand. Potential future employers of the candidates are Danish as well as international organisations, consulting firms, ministries and government agencies, and financial institutions such as commercial banks, mortgage institutions, pension funds, insurance companies and investment banks. Furthermore, the IMSQE programme provides an excellent opportunity for candidates to continue their studies at PhD level. For students who wish to continue in the PhD programme, a special transitional arrangement will be provided to bridge the transition from the IMSQE programme to research training.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

General Content
The IMSQE programme is a two-year, full-time programme of instruction corresponding to 120 ECTS credits within the areas of macroeconomics, microeconomics, economics, econometrics, finance and accounting. The courses in the IMSQE programme consist of a mixture of regular MSc courses with a quantitative orientation and PhD courses offered through the PhD programme in economics and management. Furthermore, there are special requirements regarding the level and qualitative contents of written assignments, and particular emphasis will be put on the students’ analytical, quantitative skills.

Besides the courses constituting the formal programme of study, the students are expected to take a number of special, intensive courses at the PhD level offered through various network programmes like the Danish Graduate Programme in Economics (DGPE) and the Danish Doctoral School of Finance (DDSF). Further, a Summer School will be organized in August between the first and second year, where the students must attend lectures for two weeks and prepare a written report.

A personal academic advisor - or mentor - from the faculty associated with the programme will be appointed to each student in the IMSQE programme. The advisor will assist the student in putting together the individual study programme.
