Buckingham is a small market town in North Buckinghamshire, around an hour and a half away from central London. With an attractive array of historic buildings, Buckingham is a pleasant place to study a Masters. The local University of Buckingham is a private research university that was established in 1973.

What’s it like to study a Masters in Buckingham?

Buckingham takes its name from Bucca, the Anglo-Saxon leader who reportedly founded the town in the 7th century. It played an important role in battles between the Saxons and Danes until the 11th century, with both sides attempting to gain control over the area.

Unfortunately, Buckingham was ravaged by a fire in 1725, suffering significant damage. However, this did mean that the town centre was rebuilt in fine Georgian style, contributing to its present-day charming character.

Curious postgraduates can find out more about the town’s history at the Buckingham Old Gaol Museum, housed in a former prison building that dates back in 1748. As well as telling the story of 17th and 18th century crime and punishment, the museum explores the story of Buckingham from the prehistoric era through to the Second World War.

Buckingham also hosts an annual charter fair – a tradition going back to 1554. Another big event in the local calendar is the British Grand Prix, which takes place at Silverstone Circuit, around 10 minutes north of Buckingham.

The University of Buckingham guarantees accommodation on and around the campus for all new students in the first four terms of their study (as long as it’s booked and paid for in time).
